Thought I’d try this just to access some classic sounds, in any case, and attempt some simple monophonic lines for a couple of songs. Some lovely sounds are included, anyway - but getting them cleanly off my iPhone (no headphone jack…) meant buying a Bluetooth speaker with an ‘Aux’ out (fiddly, expensive). The Mellotron app, however, proved almost impossible to play on a phone, however… unless you were content with single-note drones. You *can* ‘concertina’ the graphic keyboard to around an octave-and-a-half (but why no documentation describing this feature..? It took me weeks to work it out…), though it’s still hell to ‘play’. Trying to access the sounds via Midi (using Audiobus and Sidecar) did work - eventually - but introduced a loud ‘click’ on the attack to each note rendering the sounds unusable (there was already a marked ‘lag’, even using the screen interface to trigger sounds…). In all, I spent many hours (and over £100, in ‘support’ apps and additional bits of hardware) just trying to record a ‘real’ Mellotron tune on to a song… before giving up and just recording an actual flute part instead. So much for convenience. So… the sounds are in there, but you’ll never find any serious application for them, sadly… and unless you’re thoroughly minted, you’ll never be able to be able to afford the (presumably far superior..?) hardware equivalent. Such a shame, and such a wasted opportunity. I love Mellotrons… but this could easily make me go off them… ### 4/5 — Beautiful sounds, currently weird MIDI behavior *2023-04-06, version 2.0.3* I love the sounds this app has to offer. I’ve tried controlling it with MIDI for the first time, though, and every note has an unpleasant click when I press and release a key. I’m not sure what’s causing this. MIDI is coming from an Elektron Digitakt, and the only workaround I’m finding is lowering the trigger velocity almost to zero. This is not ideal as the notes play back very quietly, and the clicks still occasionally appear. ### 4/5 — Need to control volume via MIDI CC! *2022-10-22, version 2.0.3* Love this app and integrated with my midi keyboard but I want to map the volume knob to an expression pedal. It’s of that pitch knob is mapped to the right place automatically but not volume. It’s neither mapped to midi cc 7 or cc11. It seems the volume isn’t mapped and can’t be mapped to any midi cc. Adding this feature would allow me to use this… ### 2/5 — Midi isn’t working. *2022-07-04, version 2.0.3* Midi isn’t working, shows up in Audiobus and AUM but doesn’t trigger. The update history says midi support was added. I feel misled. Sounds are beautiful though, shame it appears the only way I can use them is to manually sample them. Can’t even use software to due that without midi working. ### 3/5 — Love everything except doesn’t work in AUM *2022-04-24, version 2.0.3* I love everything about app other than I can’t get it to work in AUM, which is HUGELY disappointing. Something to be added I gather. ### 4/5 — Almost Perfect *2022-02-09, version 2.0.3* I love this app and the sounds it emulates. I mostly use it with midi, but sometimes I use the on screen keys. The one small issue this app has is the slight delay in sound after a key press. My review will become 5 stars once they fix the latency issue. I would give a 5 stars but if no midi...it is not good ### 4/5 — Gets the job done and then some *2020-02-24, version 2.0.3* Having a portable Tron is something I couldn’t resist. I’ve been experimenting with it in conjunction with some small synths and the results are interesting and effective. Definitely plan on going further with it. *If I had one thing I wish was in there it would perhaps be a set-up bank. Opening it up to the same three voices can get a little tiresome, especially when I need to re -figure out which combination I was liking in a previous session. Other than that though, simple and intuitive instrument with some unexpected quirks (shifting and double tapping the knobs WHILE playing has made some really cool sounds). ### 3/5 — Crashes instantly *2019-10-01, version 1.14.0* Has not worked for at least several weeks—since either an Apple update or an update for the App. Fix this and give us more sounds, please. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Rip off *2021-10-26, version 2.0.3* No way to buy more samples just an ad for the company for the digital versions maybe 2 samples here I would use I feel ripped off would like a refund but probably too much hassle to get one ### 1/5 — Crashes in GarageBand - Unusable *2020-08-18, version 2.0.3* I wanted to like it but if you try using it as an AU in GarageBand it crashes after about 4 bars. I had to purchase a competing similar app to get my Mellotron sounds. Sad. Thanks for the developer response. It still crashes. Trying it as inter-app audio (not AU). It’s unusable. However, I would like to ask why it sounds either out of tune or a bit late for a quick moment when you press a note. For example, whenever I use the 8 Voice Choir, the voices sound very out of tune before finally getting in place. I hope that could be fixed. I think this instrument should have MORE Mellotron & Chamberlin Samples such as the Chamberlin Harp Solo, Harp 7th Arpeggio, and Harp Rolls, More Mellotron Moving Strings Sounds, Mellotron Artist Sounds such as the Yes 2 Violins, Yes Arpeggio Violins, Roxy Music I & II Sounds, More Mellotron Rhythm & Fills, etc. ### 5/5 — Great for simple purposes *2017-01-23, version 1.0* It's not the M400, nor theM4000D or even G-Force's MTron Pro. But if you have other software and hardware synths and want to infuse your track with vintage flavor (or put up a vintage flavored tree), this cheap little vst has all the ornaments and trimmings you need (basic as they are) to make it sparkle. Not a bad synth if all you need are the most popular Mellotron and Chamberlain tape-presets. #~ I would like to add that I agree with other reviewers that it needs midi implementation so it can be controlled externally. Also a plug-in option and DAW integration would be nice. I can use it as an external sound module fed into my DAW but that's a bit of a hassle. ### 5/5 — Wow *2016-09-24, version 1.0* While I understand people's request for midi, etc, this is an $8 app for crying out loud! I used this all over the Ghosts of Vinyl album and it sounds great.
