And I am sick of the fake books. So, I’ve stopped trying to memorize one abstract series of chord changes after another and started working on my ear - working on my understanding of harmony and expanding sensual experience of structure. I started ear training by swapping chord names with the Nashville number system. This was huge. I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner. And Melodear is clearly the next step to fake book freedom. The graphic illustration of music this application generates is stunningly clear and mentally manageable. Using it is so effortless, It seems I could wander through this colorful harmonic landscape without a single thought in my head and the nature of music would gradually reveal itself to me anyway. And it seems to be teaching me how to sing as well (I play upright bass). So, wow! Many thanks for this beautiful and extraordinarily useful application. —— Addtional comment : After using the app for a number of months, I do wish the developer would draw mic sensitivity down into the bass range so that I might use the app with my upright bass. I understand singing is an excellent way to internalize harmony. Have fun , David. ### 5/5 — This app is what I’ve been waiting for *2023-04-27* I switched over from Android to Apple just to start using this app. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to learning to sing and making sure that I pair my vowels and sounds with the right keys and chords to make harmony. I’m still learning harmony and in no way is anything I do perfect or even close. Nothing is perfect! Is it? But this app sure helps you map out the musical intervals vocally in an intuitive way you can’t really find anywhere else like this. Some wishlist features would be an interactive circle of fifths, the ability to record and export sections, naming sections (verse, chorus etc), I see you guys are working on edit features for chords and scales which will be cool… my biggest wonder is if there was anyway to incorporate moveable do vs fixed do? It seems you guys have a fixed do solfège format, any thoughts on being able to toggle between the two? I’d love to hear more variety of voicing for the vowels and voices as well. I know that would require recording more voices to add into the app, but just curious how that could be expanded if at all. I’ll let you know if anything else comes to mind, but beside wishlist features, this app is changing the way I write and practice vocals and helping me better understand the relationship between modes and how music is connected as a whole for each degree. I look forward to any updates and improvements to this already stellar musical tool. I would love to learn more about your company and any opportunities in future work, I have tons of ideas for taking music theory to applications and teaching / learning music in new and intuitive ways. I’m entirely self taught and recently taught myself minimal coding to build a rough application of my own, a music theory piano of sorts, whilst teaching myself music theory. I used my theory piano to teach myself theory, and I’d love to share this more and expand on it, perhaps one day even have it incorporated within your application lineup or even part of MelodEar. I love your imputs, and though we already have a full list , we will definitely get inspired by your ideas. In your wishlist you can though , there are some tricks to approach what you'd like to do : - If you want to work on a certain section of the song, use the looper ( purple stripe with little arrows on each side) to spot the section you'd like and have it looped. If for some reason you really need to make this section a separate song, just 'rename' it in the library and then edit the chord progression removing the parts that you dont want. And yes you' re right : being able to directly name sections would be -Yes we definitely created 2 major new features to be able to create your own chord and your own mode ! The compatibility/and transpostion between chords and modes will be automatically taken care of. This will be out in a few days from now. -moveable do system vs fixed do : in the current major features that will be out in a few days , we also did the 1st step of it : providing the language of Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. I know that your main point is about the referential. This will be the second step for us, and it's on top of the list : it's quite a big structural thinking to bring for us because we need to learn MelodEar to recognize Major key changes(when the referential would move to the new key) from just minor key changes to neihbouring keys ( when the referential would not move). Je vous ai dit que je modifierai la note lorsque la mise à jour pour les instruments transpositeurs sera faite… Bien cordialement Je sais que c’est une appli pour les chanteurs, mais je ne comprends pas pourquoi les dev refusent d’ajouter l’option de transposer les notes pour les instruments transpositeurs… Ils jugent cela inutile et pédagogiquement contre-productif… Ils m’ont répondu que ce n’est pas avec mes 35€ qu’ils pourront ajouter cette option… mais que cette application a beaucoup de succès, et que la Berklee de Boston suite à sa découverte a demandé 2 masterclasses pour les élèves et les professeurs de jazz de la Berklee pour expliquer cette application…Je ne vois pas le rapport avec ma demande… Effectivement, je vais rester sur ma certitude de l’intérêt d’ajouter cette option… Bref… Donc il n’y aura pas de possibilité de transposer en Bb ou Eb, j’aurais aimé l’utiliser avec la trompette Bb et le sax Eb… (voir les notes et accords réels de la trompette ou du sax alto et entendre les accords correspondants pour pouvoir jouer) pour le prix il y a peu de standards…. En comparaison ireal pro coûte 15€… oui, ces 2 applis n’ont pas la même fonction, c’est juste le prix que je compare… il n’y a pas de rythmique, juste les accords plaqués avec un son de piano midi et un métronome, mais c’est suffisant pour travailler… les transcriptions ne sont pas utiles (il y en a de nombreuses analysés sur youtube gratuites…) Bonne appli, bonne idée pour travailler l’oreille pour l’improvisation Jazz, pour les chanteurs et les instrumentistes en ut Possibilité d’essayer 3 jours gratuitement l’intégralité de l’appli avant de l’acheter. Don’t be suckered into a “subscription”, there’s nothing new. 55 standard chord changes which are freely available and are NOT the property of the app developers. Should you pay $30 over and over for that? Or the note recognition which runs on your phone? Après l’essai en trial 3 jours je ne poursuivrai pas car le prix n’est pas approprié. ### 3/5 — Clever concept, but… *2022-07-23, version 1.0.2* Great concept that brings together ear training and melodic improvisation in one. I suspect this could be a very useful practice tool. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm this however, because the free version is so scant on features (only offering two chords, and not even giving the ability to play between them at a given tempo, you have to trigger them each by hand) that you can’t really be certain how this would work for you and if it’s something you might want to pursue further. At least they could have offered one free standard, so you could try this out through a tune and see how it might affect your improvising in a real world context. Or offer sensible pricing. To unlock the app it’s 50 Australian dollars per year subscription. 50 dollars to own the app outright might be reasonable. But for a subscription - for an ear training app, even one as unique as this - that is outrageous. I don’t see many people taking the chance on this new concept, because it’s unknown, you can’t test it properly in the free version, and the pricing is so extravagant. And that is a real shame, because the method and tool has so much potential. ### 3/5 — Cool app *2022-07-15, version 1.0.2* The app concept is really cool, however I can barely try any of it without a pricey subscription. You’re limited to only two chords from the Dorian scale, and only one of which will actually let you use the mic. To be honest I don’t think the regular musician will throw away 50 bucks on a music app like this, especially since you can’t even try more features to see what you’re paying for- a bit disappointing. ### 4/5 — Great concept, but I wish it was more modular *2022-07-27* I honestly see a lot going for this app. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to verify the note degree that I’m playing to a chord, and this idea really does save a lot of time in that regard. With that said, I do think this needs some work, as sometimes I feel like I don’t always need a scale to accompany a certain chord. It’s nice to have them available, but for beginners to intermediate players it can be a little intimidating when you don’t know what scales to use. Another thing I wish this app had is the ability to be more modular with your chord and scale definitions. I like the library, but I also think that it would just be much easier if I could create a chord with the notes defined by me. It allows for people to get different voicings, and also state chords which aren’t really in this list, like sus chords or chords with omitted notes and such. Overall though, I will definitely be using this in the future. Chords can be substituted, and it’s really just a tool. I found that’s when pressing the vowels (Do-Re-Mi) etc, there’s a long delay before when you press the vowel and when it makes the sound. Also sometimes when you press it doesn’t play at all. This is an awesome app and I’d use it more but I really hope update support didn’t end for this app. Please consider the button pressing and see if you can make the buttons press easier when you want to hear the vowels. MelodEar works very simply. You enter a chord progression and choose a scale for each chord. It displays the scales and let you play or sing over them. As you play or sing, it listens to you and highlights your note within the current scale. That’s all ! Using MelodEar, you can approach a chord progression in many ways. You can sing scales, arpeggios, or interval patterns. You can focus on one chord at a time, or loop a few chords within the progression. There is no equivalent to this thoughtful amazing musical approach ! **Developer response:** Hey JazzGeek34 ! thanks for this beautiful comment ! ### 5/5 — It’s been a while I was looking for an app like that. *2024-07-18* I consider myself as a beginner instrumentalist/improviser (trumpet). By try and fail approach I realized that to improvise intentionally I need to hear the harmony. That is a very long journey to develop the ear. My trumpet teacher taught us the following approach : 1) Sing the bass line 2) Sing guide tones 3) Sing « continuous scale » from chord to chord based on the chord modes. Similar approach can be found in « the real easy ear training book » by Roberta Radley from Berkeley school of music (see sher Music website) To efficiently work on that, one needs to be able to play chords on piano and sing and control/verify the pitch yourself. Very hard to put it in place if you don’t know the chords on piano. So this app is very very helpful to put in place this routine. Now I can work on my ear on the go. Real time and effort saver. The way I want to use the app is probably not exactly like David wants it to be used (he was very kind to answer my emails). Nevertheless again I find it super useful. As always good things can be even better : Here are my three things to add: 1) to have a more « note » oriented visualization approach for instrumentalists as an option. 2) be able to visualize the lead sheets for the transposition instruments without changing the pitch (I don’t have the perfect ear, but my son has and his reference is trumpet in Bb) 3) have the possibility to add the root of the chord as a bass note as if it was played by the real bass player. I was taught to rely on the bass line to hear the root of the chord. The way the chords are played in the app is a bit tricky for my ears, so I often identify color notes as root before getting to the real root.
