By way of example, where there was an easy grading system for performance on each song or lesson in the past (did you get 50% or 70% or 90% of the notes correct), now there’s an incomprehensible grading system of some sort of numbers based on a rating scale that I can’t understand (why do I now have 1,599 points?). The new view format is much more difficult to follow and I find myself making mistakes even on the easiest lessons. Generally, the recent update is a large disappointment. I wish I hadn’t updated the app. ### 3/5 — Melodics review🎶 *2026-03-13, version 5.0.79* I love Melodics it is simply the best for kids and there is a wide range of variety to play the only downside is they just updated the app and I find it very difficult to navigate my kids always up in wrong songs and I find it confusing when it comes to looking around I feel that if they changed it back this would be a five star review but to put it straight I simply can do that after the updated. ### 2/5 — Latest version disaster *2026-03-08, version 5.0.33* Consistently lagging. Why did you wreck a great app ### 2/5 — The problems are ridiculous…. *2026-02-14, version 4.1.2973* This app has its own share of problems, but all in all, on the client side the development seems to be done really well. The user interface is nice and they do a great job making people feel excited every time they score high on a lesson. So my issue is that, they seem to have spent way too much time on the reward system and interface and not actually enough time on, the actual runtime logic… When doing the piano lessons, this app has an unstable fundamental timing flaw… It rewards players for starting a note a split second late… It punishes players for starting a note on time or a split second early… And it doesn’t even count against you if you don’t hold a note out for the duration, it should be held. I can’t tell you how many times I have literally hit a note exactly on time with the metronome and it gets counted against me because I was perhaps a millisecond early… Even though it was literally not even discernible to the human ear… However, if I play the note a little bit late… Late enough, even to where I can notice that it’s not on time, I still get counted for that note, even though it shows me it was a little bit late. The result has got me struggling to play super basic melodies with a 100% perfect score because I’m constantly watching the play head on the timeline, trying to make sure that the play head has gotten past the actual trigger moment of the note before I play the note… I don’t understand why they would spend more time developing a rewards and progress tracking feature while leaving the actual core functionality of the app, fundamentally unfinished and flawed… and looking at lots of other reviews online I see that I am not the only person who’s experiencing this problem… I am playing with an Arturia keylab 88 mk 3… plugged directly into the latest gen iPad Pro 12.9“ via of USB-C cable and to be clear, the app registers my triggered note at the right time. I can post screenshots showing that I played the note exactly on time and yet it highlights it orange saying that I missed it because it was literally a fraction of a second too early…. And that’s not acceptable… But apparently it is acceptable to play the note. A few 16th notes too late… it is extremely frustrating and hard to learn how to properly play keys when I have to try to figure out how to compensate for this terrible timing window that they’ve coded in… and seeing that I am not the only one, we can rule out issues with my device or iPad… they charge way too much per month to be having lazy issues like this that fundamentally undermined the purpose of this app… One other thing that I do find rather annoying about this app… And this may just be me, But I personally feel that this app moves far too slow in its teaching… if you are trying to get three stars on every lesson, you are literally going to be practicing for days before you even use both hands on a single piano lesson… if you don’t have an hour or two to devote to practicing with this app every single day, it’s liable to be months before you’re doing anything meaningful with two hands on the keyboard here… I understand that repetition is very important and everything… But it needs to be balanced with observable progress. If I can spend 10 hours in this app and feel like I am not even one percent better at the keys than I was when I started, it’s curriculum might need revisiting. Imagine getting an app to help you learn how to type, and the first 30 lessons has you only using one hand and only typing the same 5 letters over and over… that’s what this app feels like… They want you to pay for the subscription… So progress is intentionally slow… They can’t have you completing everything in three months because then they might not get paid… but They could always add in lots of different songs from different skill levels and give advanced players something to practice no matter how far along they are. It should not take someone six weeks of lessons on this app before they’re playing the equivalent of “ Mary had a little lamb“ with two or three fingers on each hand… I have been playing piano for years, and I got this app to work on my form and honestly just polish the rust off… After hours worth of lessons, I still had not gotten to the point where it was having me use both hands at the same time… and, the training is very unbalanced. You will literally do five or six lessons with the right hand, then you’ll do one lesson with the left hand and then you’ll go back to doing five or six lessons with the right hand again… And then one lesson with the left hand… So when the time finally comes that you do use both hands, you have essentially practiced five times more with your right hand than left… This app is a really nice idea… But it needs some revision… $40 a month is completely unjustifiable for this… you could literally take piano lessons from a professional for just 10 or $20 more a month and your progress will be exponentially faster and more meaningful… I don’t mean to hate on the developers, I am on standby to update my review as soon as things improve… But currently there are just way too many issues with both the drum and the keys… The keys lessons are way worse. The drums can also be very annoying because if you so much as accidentally buzz stroke or dribble the stick a tiny bit… Or even if you don’t… it picks it up as multiple hits anyway… which all count against you… additionally, most people who are going to be using an app like this to learn drums are going to be beginners… They are probably not going to be playing on an alesis nitro/crimson or Roland TD series… they are going to be using something like a Simmons Titan 50… something entry level… which are notorious for cross talking… I would expect to say some type of compensation algorithm in place to detect when something is likely cross talk so that it doesn’t count against the user… ### 4/5 — The crashing. *2026-01-06* I love this app. I pay for it, and i love it. But the crashing is constant. Thanks. ### 2/5 — cant stay logged in for longer than a minute *2025-08-21* it was a great app and i used it consistantly for drumming, it even worked fine last night, but today, when i tried to use it again, i opened the app, connected my drumset, and got logged off immediately. i logged back in, went to lessons, then get sent back to the log in screen again. over and over and over. i updated it, tried again, same thing. i deleted and redownloaded it and tried again, same thing. maybe its just a me problem but if it isn’t i hope it gets fixed soon ### 2/5 — A Great Concept Ruined By Poor Execution *2024-12-16, version 4.1.41* I wouldn’t recommend this software. The idea is great. It’s a good approach to improve techniques and skills. Where it all goes sideways is in the execution. You play a lesson and complete it or you get a certain amount of practice time in. The problem is it often enough it will not sync up and throws away your progress. Or they add a new lesson and the fingering guide is broken. Maybe it locks you out of lessons you paid for. And to make matters worse, support is almost non-existent. They know how to take your money but can’t code reliably to save their lives. They offer excuses, try to pass blame on to the user, but can’t get some of the basic functions of the software to work reliably most of the time. A great approach ruined by sloppy execution and poor sense of responsibility to those who pay them for a working application. They create a great perception that the software just can’t deliver on. Don’t expect them to address any bugs. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Freezes up entire OS on iPad *2026-07-19* Gets glitchy less than 5 mins into playing keys and drums using touchscreen on iPad then gets delayed then my iPad freezes and I have to force power cycle it to resolve the issue. Over Gamified and overly annoying visuals. Everything I used to love is gone. Their are so many new, flashy, uncalled for things in this update that distract from playing. The new grading scale is incomprehensible. There are now numbers in the thousands and you can never get a perfect score on the lesson. You can’t scroll through the lesson or song that you are playing just to see a part or a fill that you just want to look at and not play. I recommend to add more songs from famous bands like Nirvana or AC/DC. It is beyond me how a drum app with 100+ songs has not one song from famous bands other than the Beatles and Queen and even then the songs from those bands were bad. I would also like to recommend a video that could help drummers learn how to do that specific move or groove because all it is right now is saying what hand to hit it with and you have to figure out the rest of thing by your self. I am terribly disappointed in this new update and wish that I never have updated the app. ### 1/5 — Hate the new changes. Gamification hell *2026-03-09, version 5.0.33* UI changes make it very difficult to see notes and fingering on my iPad. The play and restart button are also way too small to reach. And should be at the bottom of the screen!! The increase or gamified elements really cheapens the experience, I just wanna practice piano!! Very much going the way of duo lingo… does not seem like the new changes were really tested… ### 1/5 — Worse then ever *2026-03-08, version 5.0.33* Today’s update has literally destroyed the functionality of the app. All these unneeded extras you’ve added has made it slow, unusable, and the latency is disgusting. ### 1/5 — The crashing. *2026-03-06* I just updated the app. What in the hell did you guys do? It is all over the place. My Roland vdrums have a heavy amount of latency. Did you try and break the app, if so; you succeeded. ### 1/5 — Possibly a good app, but I’ll never know *2025-03-24, version 4.1.647* Having downloaded Melodics I was really excited to connect my iPad to my Alesis E-drum kit and start my free trial. However that’s much easier said than done. Rather than use Bluetooth you need a cable, although what cable is not made clear. So, I’m spending my free trial trying to source a cable, although I’m reticent to buy one as I don’t yet know if Melodics is compatible with my drum kit or if I’ll like it. Drumeo works fine without a cable, so I guess I’ll just renew my subscription with them. Support pages were next to useless as none provided me with the info I needed to a) find out if my kit was Bluetooth compatible or b) what type of connector or cable I needed to link my devices. Shame, because this looked like a fun way to learn the drums. ### 1/5 — Questionable premium membership *2025-02-12* Current premium members like myself, were not notified of the changes coming to the app that would be permanent to our membership plans after we had already made payment for the upcoming year. I’ve been using the app for a couple years now, and it’s been overall fun and all that was available at the time was to learn with the “old key experience.” I had issues not being able to play certain songs with my premium membership. I reached out to the Melodics “team” multiple times and was told the “team” is working on it. Two months later and I still cannot play the songs I paid for with my premium membership and then I’m made aware via email in January 2025 that the only way to play keys after February 2025 is to use the “new key experience” It appears Melodics had no intention on fixing the songs I had issues with that comes with my premium membership. When I added a second crash cymbal to my kit they modified my confit for me so the cymbal would be recognized - Rhys and team are always there to answer any questions and issues I have. In a nutshell, this app is what you want to use if learning how to play! ### 5/5 — Astoundingly brilliant keyboard learning app *2024-11-25, version 4.0.2429* Amazingly well designed and great fun to use, it is worth every penny of the subscription price. It uses a very intuitive way of teaching, with practice sessions, following by challenges to keep in time with the backing track. Each lesson covers a different skill plus there’s a guided learning path and tons of well known songs to learn to play. And the backing tracks sound contemporary rather than being like they’ve been stripped from a cheap casio keyboard. Ignore the negative reviews, they exclusively call out the subscription price as being too high. But if you want to learn, have fun and want to keep coming back for more, the price seems cheap.
