Today it’s a leafy and attractive residential and recreational area, but once it spelled the end of the line for political dissidents and criminal offenders: founded in 1879, the former Rummelsburg workhouse was converted and used in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as a prison from 1951 until 1990. Find out what the red brick ensemble looked like as a detention facility, the functions each building had in the repressive regime of everyday prison life, and what people who experienced the prison firsthand have to say about it.
