### 1/5 — Wouldn’t Use it, even if Free

*2025-01-05*

My 4.5 year old loves iPad games and has experience with educational reading games like Homer and reading.com. So when I heard about Mentava, an app whose outrageous price meant it was going to be great, I was excited for us.

Unfortunately, the app is low quality. My child pushes back when I offer to load it for her, saying it’s “too boring” - a statement I’ve never heard her utter about an app of any kind.

And it is boring - the games are too repetitive, the graphics are poor, there aren’t interesting game mechanics to keep her excited, and nothing to warrant paying close to the price they’re asking.

If the app were free I’d give it 2-3 stars since it is better than nothing, but I can’t in good conscious recommend anyone in any condition, even with unlimited funds, use this app given what else is out there.

I wish I could attribute the above to poor execution of a great idea and I could just “wait until the next version”. This is just poor execution of an unoriginal idea.

**Developer response:** We're sorry you had such a negative experience. Mentava is designed to be a more rigorous learning experience than edutainment apps like Homer. Unlike apps that are designed to keep kids busy as digital babysitters, kids typically don't have the stamina to focus on Mentava's lessons for more than 15-30 minutes at time.

We believe our more efficient learning methodology is worth it, as it allows us to take kids from zero to a 2nd grade reading level in only about 100 levels.

### 2/5 — Way to expensive

My daughter really likes the app but the price brings the review way down cause lets be realistic who has $500 a month just for reading practice like at that point i could buy an entire homeschool curriculum for cheaper

### 2/5 — Are we ok?

$500 a month? Are we ok? Did you invent reading?

### 3/5 — Pretty buggy

### 5/5 — It works

*2026-08-01*

My first went through Mentava starting in July 2025 at age 5.5. At the time, he recognized most letters, and that was about it. He completed Mentava in January of this year, reading at a 2nd grade level. Now, a full year after first starting Mentava, he’s reading at a 4th grade level! I am starting my second now at age 4.5, and I am super excited to see how he progresses!

### 5/5 — The Ultimate Reading App

*2026-07-07*

Completely aligned to the science of reading. The best premier app available.

### 5/5 — Best reading app for kids

*2026-05-26*

Mentava is such a solid platform for teaching kids to read. We’ve tried a bunch of other apps and they were by and large games disguised as education. My daughter made more progress in a week on Mentava than 6 months on other apps. 10/10 would recommend

### 5/5 — The best.

*2026-01-01*

I didn’t really believe that an app could make a big difference in his reading journey. I didn’t want to introduce screen time, he really doesn’t have very much in his week. I also care a lot about what kind of screen time he gets. If we watch something we watch Little Bear because it’s not overstimulating. It feels less addictive. He really likes to play the kahoot math games, and I think those are good, but he never liked their reading games, and the other reading apps seem really… like intellectual junk food. This one is different. It’s engaging, but tiring for him. He doesn’t resist doing it, and I can see him enjoying it, but I also see it tiring him out if he does a long session. I don’t think that’s bad. It means he’s working, and at some point he needs to take a break. That’s a great rhythm to learn about yourself. And the reading skills he’s learned are truly undeniable. I’m blown away.

### 5/5 — Kid loves it

*2025-10-06*

Only 3 days in, but my kid loves this app. My kid can spend 15-30 on this before he gets gassed out. Also I feel like the parent is required to be present, it’s not something you just hand to your kid on a long drive. Really looking forward to seeing where he is at in his reading journey in a few months of using this app.

### 5/5 — Well done

*2025-07-17*

Highly recommend this app.

We used the app for exactly 6 months. Started when my daughter was 5.25 years old.

I had to sit with my daughter and make her see the value of practice and repetition while helping her stay focused on the app for 10 mins everyday.

I will say parental involvement in the beg is required. Else I don’t see this working.

Patiently watching was hard but it surprised me when I saw her struggle and helped me appreciate when and how she needed support.

Once she learnt to persist, the app worked like magic!!! She fast tracked as soon as she got the hang of the phonetics and within 6 months moved on to advanced reading.

Thank you Mentava! You’ve a valuable app here.
