### 4/5 — Great dictionary; terrible ads

*2026-08-25, version 5.9.5*

I love this app and use it throughout my week. Merriam-Webster is the standard and I grew up in a household where mouths would clamp shut and fingers would point to a dictionary when I asked anyone how a word was spelled.

But these ads are TOO MUCH. They are egregious and account for the lost star.

### 2/5 — How do I make the book stop flying?

*2026-08-24, version 5.9.5*

I dont know man but it flys

### 4/5 — Nice dictionary

*2026-08-23, version 5.9.5*

It has games and it’s nice

### 3/5 — Upgrade

*2026-08-21, version 5.9.5*

It’s hilarious to think they want to charge you for a dictionary when the Google app exists. Free version is acceptable but popups are annoying. I also have a dozen physical dictionaries with zero popups.

### 4/5 — Too many adds

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

Too many adds that’s it but it’s good

### 4/5 — Pronunciation

*2026-08-19, version 5.9.5*

I wish the app provided for an audible (spoken)pronunciation—maybe it does and I haven’t found it yet

### 5/5 — Handy-dandy

*2026-08-19, version 5.9.5*

I love having this app on my home Home Screen.

### 5/5 — The dictionary app

*2026-08-17, version 5.9.5*

I love it it helps my granddaughter do her work

### 5/5 — Great

*2026-08-17, version 5.9.5*

Great work

### 5/5 — Word a Day is captivating

*2026-08-17, version 5.9.5*

I really like Word a Day. Even when I know the word, I like to see what the dictionary has to say about it and learn more about it. And when I don't know the word it's exciting and fun to learn something new.

### 5/5 — Me giving y’all props

*2026-08-15, version 5.9.5*

I love this app. I love to study and learn exactly what not just words mean but what everything means. I don’t like to speak unless i can really have knowledge on the words i say…so thank yall this app is easily accessible and the ads aren’t bad. 5 star review from me.

### 5/5 — Word of the Day

*2026-08-14, version 5.9.5*

I love it!

### 5/5 — I LOVE YOU MERRIAM-WEBSTER

*2026-08-14, version 5.9.5*

every flashing screen compares not to your beauty, Merriam-Webster Dictionary. My sunshine, my moonbeam, my gilded stars set against the darkest night. My love for you is unrestrained; it knows not the boundaries of my fragile human heart.

8/10 dictionary, 8/10 thesaurus, adds up to 20/10 (4 bonus points bc they work well together)

### 4/5 — Very decent dictionary

*2026-08-13, version 5.9.5*

Thorough explanations for words, but it doesn’t cover all the meanings if you lack a subscription.

### 5/5 — References

*2026-08-13, version 5.9.5*

The dictionary gives word options I can choose from.

### 5/5 — 5 ⭐️’s!

*2026-08-12, version 5.9.5*

I love the app and have used it for YEARS!

It’s apart of my daily’s. (Only a few apps I open when grabbing my phone off the nightstand.)

I hate missing a day. I loved Grammar and English in school. It was one of my better subjects. I feel less intelligent when I miss a day.

I use it apart of the daily word whenever I need some clarification, however, I find myself using the thesaurus part of it more than the actual dictionary.

Great app! Five star rating! Thank you! Your AD is very short and small as well unlike some of my other apps recently downloaded. AWESOME JOB! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

### 5/5 — Review

*2026-08-12, version 5.9.5*

Mirriam Webster dictionary has been so helpful to me all these years. And I really appreciate this immensely contribution this dictionary has done in my English works

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Deleting this app

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

It’s ridiculous to have full page advertisements that make you wait before exiting. Why would anyone use this and deal with that when they can simply google it.

### 1/5 — Not totally free

*2026-08-19, version 5.9.5*

You get some free then they want you to pay for a subscription.

### 1/5 — Paywalls words?!

*2026-08-12, version 5.9.5*

I use this app when reading so I can look up words I don’t recognize.

Just today I got a message saying that to find the definition of a particular word, I would need to pay for a subscription.

Nope! Screw that. Uninstalling and looking for a new app now.

### 1/5 — Scam ads

*2026-08-03, version 5.9.5*

They allow scam ads on their app that are completely inappropriate for minors!

### 1/5 — This is the most annoying app

*2026-07-26, version 5.9.4*

Why bother using this app when there are other options with more words and no ads. The camera can’t even read text. Terrible joke in 2026

### 1/5 — Frequent Disruptive Ads

*2026-07-24, version 5.9.4*

There are way too many ads, too frequently, and too disruptive. You have to hunt around for the close button which changes between ads.

I encourage anyone reading this to bookmark the website in your browser and use that instead.

### 1/5 — Terrible Product Which Disgraces the Good Name of Merriam-Webster

*2026-07-23, version 5.9.4*

By putting ads in this application you spit on the memory of the brilliant Noah Webster. May your ancestors look upon you with shame.

### 1/5 — It is both useful and spam-ful

*2026-07-23, version 5.9.4*

Being able to consult an online dictionary is great. However, after a word is entered, this app sometimes traps the unsuspecting user in a spam freeze, making it impossible to go either forward or back without clicking on a full-screen ad. Even once in the ad, one sometimes has to close the app itself in order to escape.

### 1/5 — Riddled with ads

*2026-07-22, version 5.9.4*

Ads every two clicks have made this app unusable

### 1/5 — App broken

*2026-07-19, version 5.9.4*

Love the dictionary. However, I am running iOS 26.5.2 and the app freezes and becomes non-functioning every time I log into my account (I pay for ad-free). I can then delete the app, redownload and it will work (with ads) until I log in again. I contacted support but the problem persists. Ridiculous.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Better than most free apps

*2026-08-25, version 5.9.5*

Very few ads. Functions as it should. Is very useful and helpful. Has a word of the day widget. Very good basic dictionary app. I was tired of downloading "word of the day apps" that were less word of the day and more lesson based, daily challenge game apps which forced you to pay for them just to get any actual use out of them, and they weren't even what they advertised to be. I love this app so far. Keep being awesome!

### 5/5 — Fun & educational games

*2026-08-25, version 5.9.5*

Always amazing easy to understand definitions of words yet they are so precise and accurate.

### 5/5 — Exceptional

*2026-08-23, version 5.9.5*

The Merriam Webster Dictionary has come in handy more than once! The definitions are clearly explained and make perfect sense. I especially enjoy having the thesaurus because it comes in handy during various writing assignments, they have soooo many word varieties! Love this, give it a try!!!

### 5/5 — One word

*2026-08-22, version 5.9.5*

Inquisitive.

### 5/5 — Pulls

*2026-08-21, version 5.9.5*

Wwwwww in the chatttt

### 5/5 — Very user friendly

*2026-08-21, version 5.9.5*

I’m constantly looking up words, and this dictionary is very user. I love it.

### 5/5 — Positive impacts of Merriam Webster Dictionary.

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

This app’s ability to provide words and not some type of rocket science words, these are words that can be used on a daily basis , words that describes real life situations, is truly amazing- well they may sound out of the world a-times, but it’s real meaning are very correlating to each and every human being in every respective aspects of our lives.

### 5/5 — Good

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

I like how let us listen to the word

### 5/5 — Mmm words

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

I'm only here because of Stoker, Tolkien, and oddly Meyer. Mmm Big words for my little brain

### 5/5 — English Language Right at My Fingertips

*2026-08-20, version 5.9.5*

I’m not the greatest speller, so I needed something to turn to and I love this app. While I have other tech assistants like Siri and Alexa, I continue to use a dictionary for spelling, as well as word meaning. And I love the word games that the app comes with, which makes language fun, and helps me improve mine.
