### 2/5 — Not working anymore

*2026-05-19*

The app has stopped working. It opens for a second and then crashes. It worked a few weeks ago. I don’t know what changed.

### 3/5 — Subtitle Settings Need Work

*2026-03-29*

Many of the operas require you to manually turn on the subtitles for each and every track. This means you’ll have to stop and turn them on as often as every five to ten minutes. They should certainly be able to program this to keep subtitles on consistently. The operas themselves are fantastic but the app needs a bit of work.

### 2/5 — And You Thought Met was the Cadillac of Opera

*2026-02-04*

I recently got a smart TV and was so excited to get this app as I am a huge opera fan and amateur vocalist myself. I got the app on TV first but it was having trouble creating an account and subscribing. So I downloaded on my phone, eventually I got the subscription to work and can access operas. I love watching them but here’s the problem - it doesn’t save favorites, and doesn’t save your place so you can resume, which is a big problem because its pretty common to not watch a 4 hour opera in one sitting. So every time I go into the app I have to find my opera all over again and toggle to approximately where I left off. This is especially disappointing since Met considers themselves such the elites, but the can’t get a programmer to fix this simple problems. I see now in the reviews everyone has the same problem with these apps. What a disappointment.

### 2/5 — Abysmal app

*2025-07-05*

I have done my best to support MET, but the technical infrastructure is just abysmal. The app malfunctions so often that even a die-hard opera fan like myself would consider giving up. I have been watching MET make poor decisions for its survival for years, but I hope they are wise enough to salvage their digital income by investing a better technical team.

### 3/5 — Better on Appletv, Glitchy for Phone

*2025-05-22*

The app glitches and sends error messages on the phone. On the tv, it’s amazing.

### 2/5 — App is terrible

*2025-03-13*

The app keeps asking me to log in and does not recognize my user name although it recognizes it on other platforms. There is no help available from what I can tell.

### 1/5 — Crashes every time I open it

*2024-11-19*

Crashes every time I open it, uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.

### 1/5 — So far, so useless

*2024-11-17*

I bought a subscription and it recognises my account - but tells me I need a subscription. Then when I tap to check this out, it tells me I have a subscription. Then it announced that an unknown error has occurred. On the plus side, I get to read ad libitem their patronising schtick about how I may find some of the content offensive because bla bla bla. But there’s no chance of that because I can’t access the content even though I paid for it.

### 1/5 — Broken with no fix for months

*2024-10-31*

This app worked fine 2 years ago. On the latest IOS, Now, it does not remember the operas I was recently watching. I have to search for it every time. Favourites do not work.
On an older ipad, it remembers where I have stopped but it keeps logging off and does not work with keychain unless I close the app by swiping up and reloads it.
All in all, a lovely site but rubbish app, verging on unusable.
When reporting the faults, all I get is “we are aware of the issue” but no fix.

### 1/5 — In exploring mode, no free preview even though the icon shows that performance is free for preview.

*2024-09-07*

The App is misleading. Not worth the time to install or explore.

### 1/5 — App is unusable

*2024-06-29*

The latest updates have completely messed up the app on an ipad.
Track list dies not work on landscape. Resume from previous does not work. Not only is the resume 'title' missing, it disappears when clicking on the 'back' arrow.

### 1/5 — Rip off

*2024-04-19*

Doesn't work, even though you have a monthly subscription. Logging out and logging in again doesn't change anything. It was pure. You give money and nothing happens.

### 1/5 — Search crashes on iPad with space

*2024-02-20*

Crashes every time I tap the space bar in search mode. Crashes ever time I use punctuation like an apostrophe. Can’t display in landscape mode. Usless.

### 1/5 — App has gone downhill

*2024-02-20*

I used to love watching operas on this app. It was seamless to watch an opera, easy to continue watching an opera that I had not yet finished, and the quality was wonderful. Now my continue watching queue is wiped out and if I have to stop in the middle of an opera, when I go back to the video (after having to search for it again), it doesn’t pick up where I’ve left off. The worst quality is that the app stops at the end of each track so I have to keep hitting play throughout the opera. The app works fine on my Roku and it seems to be okay on my laptop (when I watch through the met opera website); however, on my iPhone it is a mess. I don’t know what the developer did, or what they were trying to achieve, but they have ruined this app. It is such a shame since the content that is available is priceless. What isn’t priceless is the $15 I pay a month for a now unusable app. Please go back to the old version. It was perfect.

### 1/5 — Design

*2024-02-15*

Great opera but terrible app. Poorly organized and very difficult to log into. Obviously there is some sort of crisis in progress.

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2024-02-13, version 2.3.3*

Crashes constantly
Updated and it still crashes nonstop please fix

### 1/5 — I just want to watch opera

*2024-01-28, version 2.3.3*

The functionality of the app is terrible. God forbid I get logged out of it, I’ll have to wait until the planets align again before I’ll be able to log back in again.

### 1/5 — Not logging me in

*2024-01-24*

Login information not being accepted, says data cannot be read

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2024-01-14*

Crashes constantly

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — I cannot use my subscription!

*2026-04-08*

I have been a Met Opera on Demand subscriber for a couple of years now. I don’t think I watch enough of it to justify $150/year but still get the annual subscription because I love having immediate access to great opera content on my Apple TV and also love supporting opera/classical music companies. I’ve had minimal issues with the app until a few weeks ago when it started prompting me to “login or subscribe” (even though I’m already subscribed to it annually, which got automatically renewed earlier this year). Unfortunately, logging in or restoring the purchase options “cannot find purchase”! I confirmed via the Apple TV settings that I have an active subscription! I tried contacting their customer support several weeks ago but I received nothing but radio silence 😤

### 1/5 — Is MetOpera App’s Fat Lady Singing?

*2026-03-24*

I wish I knew. I can’t tell. You’d think that pressing a play button arrow would start a song, but no. No music begins. Click the track list? Shows “now playing” but no sound from iPhone. I’ve had this annoying app for several months and generally give up. On one occasion, I kept clicking on any opera, any song! Just play something!! This opera, that opera. Audio. Video. Ugh! Nothing but frustration. No sound. Put down the phone. Then about 5 minutes later I heard something! It was playing some random opera I had never heard of, but hallelujah it was playing!! Unfortunately I had to stop it to take a call, and I’ve never gotten it to play again. What a waste of money! I use opera for relaxation. This app has the opposite effect. If anyone knows how to make it play, please let me know

### 1/5 — Terrible, no good, very bad app

*2026-02-28, version 2.3.12*

This app truly sucks. It doesn’t Ave your progress. Want to watch 2 hours of Das Rehingold? Good luck finding your place when you come back. Favorites? You can save them, but who knows if your list will show up when you come back to the app. Search features are terrible and counter intuitive. The operas are amazing, the app is worthless. And it costs as much as my Amazon prime subscription. The Metropolitan Opera needs to fix this app. People have been complaining for years. It isn’t much better than when I started streaming their operas in 2006.

### 1/5 — Content Great. App SUUUUUUCKS!

*2026-02-21*

It genuinely blows my mind that the greatest Opera House in the world, in my opinion, has had an app for over a decade and a half that doesn’t even pretend to work on any kind of consistent level. I probably cancel my subscription every couple of months and wait several years before downloading this app again. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to watch all of your favorite operas with your favorite singers with an outstanding Orchestra and all of this design be literally impossible to view because of how poorly the app is run.

There is no excuse for this. We’ve had streaming services for almost 20 years now and people like the Berlin Philharmonic, Medici, in the Royal Opera House don’t have these kinds of problems whatsoever. I wish I could say that I might as well flip a coin but that assumes that the app even works half the time. Why is it that even videos downloaded for off-line usage don’t work? It’s genuinely embarrassing to the point that I would have thought that at some point over the last 15 years somebody somewhere in some data area would spend. The two weeks that it would take to basically start from scratch. But alas, here we are.

I’m running out of space to write, but this app just angers me so much. The content is so good, why can’t I freaking see it?

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work.

*2026-02-01*

Although I am logged in and have a monthly subscription, I cannot use the app. Re-installing is of no use. Very annoying.

### 1/5 — Unfortunately Awful

*2026-01-15*

Most of the app simply doesn’t work. Some performances download fine, others don’t. Sometimes screens freeze. Sometimes it asks you to login when you’re already logged in. Too many issues to detail here.

There are so many bugs just in 60 seconds of using the app, but they only release fixes 1-2x per year, so don’t count on them being fixed soon (probably not ever).

This is essentially a dead app. Don’t waste your money.

### 1/5 — Instant FAIL

*2025-10-03*

App is Cee RAP. omg. It fails during the set up!!! It won’t accept the password to create a profile.

Epic FAIL.

### 1/5 — App useless

*2025-09-15*

Keeps asking me to subscribe .
I used Apple Pay to subscribe, nonetheless the subscribe pop-up appears, and it does not let me proceed, I repeated this a few times. Your app is useless and I want my money back.

### 1/5 — Can’t login

*2025-07-21*

Can’t login, keeps giving an error. Tech support can do nothing.

### 1/5 — Misleading - free trial not functional

*2025-04-27*

There is an advertised 7 day free trial. After successfully subscribing I was still unable to access content. I logged in and out, deleted and redownloaded the app. Useless. This should be suspended from the App Store, Apple. It’s not working with your platform, clearly.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Design

*2024-02-22, version 2.3.3*

Technically, this app doesn’t work well. Updates are always problematic and seem to reorganize the presentation without any apparent benefit. The developers have taken on more they can deliver. Still, it is the Met, and if you can get through, the opera is great.

### 5/5 — Excellent App

*2022-12-20, version 2.3.0*

Works flawlessly on my Apple TV and sound system. Only complaint is iPad app favorites do not synch up with Apple TV. Also the Met takes its own time and selection in getting new Operas up. Only the HD versions are worth seeing which is a great pity as some of the greatest performances are older and not HD. Obviously a 4K option would be welcome.

### 5/5 — Splendid

*2022-08-01*

It is a robust technology, decisively superior to medici.tv with its technical failures. So much is outstanding but the more recent HD material is little short of sensational. The riches of the Met very often yield the best singers and best direction and design. Just watched Massenet’s Cinderella and it was spectacular as was Donizetti’s Elixir of Love. With these and so many others you feel you grasp at last the promise of this most challenging of art forms. The sheer excellence of this house is what impresses, a treasure of world culture and offered via big screen tv. Never tire of it.

### 5/5 — I enjoyed it very much

*2022-03-26, version 2.2.9*

After knowing the treatment to Anna Netrepko, I would like to cancel permanently.

Art cannot be managed politically motivated.

### 5/5 — Retraction

*2021-09-29, version 2.2.9*

Ok, Met. I owe you an apology. I wrote the [below] brief review during the free streaming, then paid for a subscription in July. Since then, the app has worked flawlessly, both on my smart tv and my iPad. I am enjoying every minute.

(From June)
Works great on my iPad, but when I can get the app to work on my smart TV — which is always a challenge— it soon crashes.

### 5/5 — App issue quickly resolved. Wonderful support! Nice app!

*2021-03-12, version 2.2.9*

Great app. I have been using this app for a year in my various devices - Roku, Amazon TV, iPhone, iPad. The app works a little differently in Roku, vs. Amazon, vs. the iOS devices; but I have been able to enjoy my shows tremendously in all my devices during the past year. Yesterday, the apps in my iOS devices would flicker open and immediately close. I went to the Met Opera website and called up their Chat Now. They were very helpful and told me that there was an issue with their app vs iOS and it had been fixed. I just had to delete my app and re-download from the App Store. Everything is back to working beautifully now! Great customer support!

### 5/5 — Super

*2021-01-24*

### 5/5 — Free Previews during the pandemic

*2020-03-19, version 2.2.4*

Thank you MetOnDemand for showing free HD operas! It is a great service. So important now, when elderly people have to stay indoors. I just watched the 3rd opera with my parents - Il Travatore. My mom and I used to watch Met HD operas at the movies, but I’ve never imagined that my 85 yrs young dad will watch opera! And these are wonderful operas with great casts.
I hope this program continues in April.
