For example finding all pictures within a date range or certain location. Since I have a lot of old imported pictures in my iCloud I would like to find all pictures that have empty fields in date and/or location to be able to add data to the pictures. Another way to add that functionality would be to go from apple’s pictures app and be able to multi edit a selection of pictures. Please add either so I can add metadata to my old imported pictures. (I have way too many to just scroll and look for them) ### 4/5 — IPTC Editing! and exif *2019-12-12, version 1.8.3* Need to view and edit IPTC metadata? This is the app. Last time I checked it is the only app offering IPTC editing. Several nice features (batch, resize, saved) Does not handle IPTC Extended, PLUS, or other enhanced metadata fields. Why Adobe did not include metadata tools in Lightroom for iPad Pro is beyond me—greatful that this app is here to help. ### 4/5 — Best meta data editor yet *2019-10-09* While not perfect, I think this is the best picture meta data editor I have managed to find on the App Store in terms of. Modifying basic fields for consumers (not photography gurus) for saving things like: - date - location - title - description - headline. It also lets you bulk edit files which is a real time saver. It also gives you the option to save a new picture with the meta data or overwrite the old picture. The only thing I’d like to see added is the ability to present meta data fields only once on the meta data screen. Right now the fields are duplicated depending on if they are applicable to IPTCC, TIFF, EXIF formats. While this might be handy for some people concerned about these formats, I would like these duplicates hidden once I have chosen which fields I want to work with, and only have once instance each presented on the meta screen for each of the fields I have listed above. This would make things less confusing for non-technical users like my wife. ### 4/5 — Useful *2019-03-22, version 1.8.3* I especially use the batch process in scanning old slides. ### 3/5 — Keyword changes not what I was hoping *2019-03-21, version 1.8.3* I bought this app mostly to make keyword changes. The good thing is that it does batch keyword changes. But there are two things I wish t did better 1. I wish I could easily swipe between pictures and select from common keywords for each picture. Right now I have to click on about 8 buttons and type in each keyword i want to add. 2. If I had feature number one I wouldn’t necessarily want this feature but I wish I could add a keyword to a batch of photos that have different keywords already. Right now you can only make them ALL the same keyword, you can’t just add a new keyword to all of them. It functions really well and I will continue to use it for now. Hopefully there is a way to make keywords easier. Thanks! ### 2/5 — Annoying *2019-03-08* Object to being pestered for a review after purchase ### 4/5 — Nice batch EXIF editor *2019-01-07, version 1.8.3* I used MetaGear to add locations and edit dates (by offset) for photos taken on my non-iPhone camera. I went through 3k+ photos in a few days. My main feature request is to locate photos by location so I can adjust with more precise location (e.g., Paris => Louvre). This can be via location viewer in the app itself or via an “open in” extension in the photos app. ### 4/5 — Invaluable for photojournalism *2018-12-04, version 1.8.3* Does a good of interfacing with iOS’s Photo app to add IPTC data — invaluable for photojournalism. Presets really help speed the process and reduce potential errors. If the developer could add hooks into the Files App, Dropbox, et. al. it would easily be a 5-star app! ### 2/5 — What happened *2018-08-28, version 1.8.3* I’ve used this before. I’ve only used it to change the dates on photos I’ve edited . It drives me nuts if I edit a photo then it’s not in chronological order. After changing the date I hit the done bottom and it give me a error code. Can u pleas fix or can I get a refund ### 4/5 — Buy This App over all others ! *2017-06-26, version 1.7.4* June 2017 first review: Buy this app over all others. I bought a different app first, paid for it, am waiting to get a refund. So I kept searching app store and found this one. Works great, except one feature, the save file name as feature, first you change the name, then there is no way to save that format, app keeps going all the way back without saving the format nor the requested file name. Fix that and it will get 5 stars ! More app review later as I use it more. Developer response time very good. Unfortunate that response was bad news, the saving of name format cannot happen unless connected to icloud. Which I do not utilize at all. I keep photos stored on BOX or DROP BOX or SanDisk WIFI USB stick. Will remain 4 stars until such a time I can utilize the name format function. All in all I highly recommend this app to others. **Developer response:** Hello, Currently it is not possible to save custom name in iOS, this feature is designed for using with iCloud Photo Library. The changed filenames appear in iCloud, you can view them in your macOS Photos app. ### 4/5 — Great but a couple of suggestions *2017-02-20, version 1.1.3* 1. Can be buggy and crash when editing batch photos 2. I wish there was a feature to keyword search/add location instead of dragging the pin. Working with locations across continents is laborious. ### 5/5 — Great app for adding keywords and descriptions embedded in picture! *2017-01-03, version 1.1.3* I like how easy it is so select multiple pictures, edit the meta data, add tags and keywords, and then save all at once. It saves as a new picture and prompts you to delete the old picture. This is fine and makes sense because the iPhone naturally doesn't let any app (other than native Photos app) to delete pics without prompting the user. So I like how this app doesn't create duplicates of the pic. Great app!! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not linked *2024-09-28* Not linked to photos, doesn’t allow view and edit of metadata provided in Photos app. ### 1/5 — EXIF presets (templates) don’t seem to work. *2021-09-27, version 1.9* When I’m shooting I have to caption my photos using IPTC standards. Much of that is repetitive, the same information over and over. This isn’t saving that information to the preset (a template, basically), it’s only saving a couple of fields. It could have been exactly what I’ve been waiting for but it’s coming up very short. ### 1/5 — Will not let you add custom tags :-( *2019-12-27, version 1.8.3* This is really disingenuous for an $8 app to say you can "add tags" without mentioning that only a specific list of tags can be added. I need to add the "projection" tag, the GoPro max/fusion 360 cams all fail to add that tag to still photos exported from the GoPro iOS app, and other apps can't display them as 360 spherical without the tag "projection=equirectangular". ### 1/5 — Crashes on iPad - silence from developer *2019-02-03* On the face of it, this app was what I was looking for when getting pictures away on the go. On my iPhone, it works perfectly and is useful, but editing anything on the iPhone is difficult so I wanted to use it on the iPad. Great in what you can do, but when you go to save anything, it just crashes, so useless. Emailed the developer, only silence sadly. Don't waste your money. ### 1/5 — Batch Edit Caption (apply Preset), save and crash *2018-04-01* Like so many other IPTC editing apps on IOS this is a disappointment. I purchased this app as a professional photographer I’m always looking for solutions to photo metadata. I opened the app, testing with 4 Fuji JPG files on the iPad (with data already in). I edited the first image. Created a preset from it. Selected all 4, applied the metadata then tried to save all 4, resizing and renaming at the same time. If this had worked it would have been perfect. Pity was it crashed. No saved images, no updated images... Back to the drawing board. Why is IPTC editing on IOS so difficult ? ### 1/5 — Image compressed *2017-02-28, version 1.1.4* Why are images compressed so badly??? ### 1/5 — Date changes don't work *2017-02-08* Date changes are only reflected when viewing the photo inside this app. Not in the photos app or any other app that can read EXIF data. Which means the EXIF data is not actually being changed. ### 1/5 — Does not work.. *2016-11-30* The apps layout is awesome, but when you edit the exif data it prompts you if you want to delete the original. I said yes, even with full permissions it never saves a new photo. All it does delete the original, if you select no, it does not delete the original but it also doesn't save a new photo with edited exif data. Complete waste of money, the app does not do what it says it does. ### 1/5 — Changes file size *2016-10-17* I wish I had known this was going to compress my tif files w/o warning or option. It doesn’t try to be slick and distracting. It just makes sure it works and I appreciate that. ### 5/5 — Great App for a Pro, but needs Files App support *2019-11-25, version 1.8.3* After a year of using Metagear, I’d love to pay for a Pro version unlock that allows you to handle files outside of the Camera Roll/Photos App. More image apps are using the Files App for storage and file manipulation since iOS 12 & 13z ### 5/5 — Great app! But can you fix a bug please? *2017-11-16, version 1.8* Hi Ilya! Great app!! But there seems to be a bug (also in the macOS app). If you have the JPEG quality at 100% (overwriting file) it doubles the image in size. In other words, if I have 3.5 MB file that I’m adding some exif dates and I use 100% quality, I expect it to be around 3.5-ish MB in size, right? Well, the 100% creates a 7.0 MB file instead. If I set it to 99% it doesn’t happen, it just gives me a 3.4 MB file instead. Can you take a look into this please? **Developer response:** Hello! Your image had already been compressed before you open it in MetaGear, that's why it's 3.5 MB, it's not a 100% quality. The app cannot know what compression had been used in you image before, it's limit of using JPEG format. To change metadata of JPEG image the app has to uncompress your image and compress it back again. When you select 100%, it just doesn't compress the image. ### 5/5 — Invaluable Tool *2017-07-21* This app offers all, and probably more, than most users would want. The developer is exceptionally responsive to queries, and ideas, and the price is very fair considering it has family sharing for all those budding Togs. An easy and intuitive interface, with presets to make tasks less time consuming is what, for me, sets this app apart from all the others. You can remove the data you don't want in your images, add the data you do want or that is missing, and protect all your hard work with copyright data and key tags such as the author too. This is especially useful for saving time when sorting images later, as the ground work can be done at the source. ### 5/5 — Easy to use, with a refined UI *2017-07-12, version 1.7.4* I needed an app to help me change the date/time on my photos. This app does that and much more. The design is simple and easy to understand, even when you're editing multiple photos. As MetaGear was otherwise quite satisfactory I have changed my rating from 1 to 5 stars. Leaving comments brings near immediate updates so here goes: Still a full five star product! One improvement would be to make it easier to flip between pictures. Currently, you have to go back to the camera roll to select a different picture. It would be great if users could swipe left or right on the picture preview to move to the next or previous picture. All the praise in my previous review below still applies. Thanks for a great product!*** I am a photo professional and I frequently need to be able to view or edit IPTC data in photos and videos. I wanted an app that would allow me to do that on the go. MetaGear is solid app that will give you the ability to read and edit IPTC fields. It is updated regularly and hasn't been abandoned like Photogene⁴. It launches fast, works great and hasn't crashed on me yet. When I first purchased the app, I need access to a couple of deprecated field and the developer added access to those fields almost immediately upon request! If you are an imaging professional who needs to read or edit IPTC metadata this app is perfect for the job! Need more functionality? Ask and see what can be done.
