### 3/5 — It’s a Facebook product sooo,,,

*2025-08-04, version 1.7.1*

MEH…?

### 3/5 — No longer being developed

*2025-02-20, version 1.7.1*

This was a great app. Sadly the developer is no longer actively developing the app so not sure why it’s still in the App Store.

### 3/5 — Pretty good app, although the reply function is infuriating.

*2024-12-03, version 1.7.1*

Almost everything is good about this app… but I am SO used to having a button on the bottom of the screen to reply to the post I am looking at that I didn’t even know tapping the speech bubble starts a reply for *any* platform… until this one started making my replies into standalone posts! I can never remember to change how I reply until I make a mistake at least once a day!

### 4/5 — A bit laggy

*2024-09-03, version 1.7.1*

App has got pretty laggy since the last iOS update

### 3/5 — Looks good but can’t translate

*2024-07-08, version 1.7.1*

TL;DR—Metatext claims it’ll translate posts but if it can do so, it’s a very well-hidden feature.

I used the Mast app since I joined a Mastodon instance about four years ago, but recently Mast stopped updating my timeline and it looks like that app has been abandoned.

To replace Mast, I downloaded Metatext, and it’s worked well for me so far. However, one feature that Mast has is completely missing from Metatext: translation of posts. It’s not possible in Metatext, yet Mast had this feature from the beginning four years ago. And no, I don’t consider the “highlight text and then send it to Apple’s servers” method a valid translation mechanic nor a feature of the app.

### 3/5 — Intuitive but unreliable

*2024-01-19, version 1.7.1*

This is a lovely app to use. If you’re coming to the fediverse from another social media site, this is your gateway. Feed is simple and chronological, reactions are easy to use, DMs can be found in the usual place. Love the design - super intuitive.
However, loading the feed is very glitchy; some days I can’t see any content at all, all day! Also, only a section of the feed loads and you have to click “see more” after scrolling it, which feels archaic.
I stick with it because it’s free and easy. But if I can find something else free before the loading bug is fixed, I will move, because it is a big problem.

### 4/5 — Better than the official app, but still some work to do

*2023-10-11, version 1.7.1*

Better than the official app, but still some work to do. E.g. there is no edit option, and the post character limit is hard set rather than allowing post up to the amount supported by each instance.

### 4/5 — Great Mastodon app, but needs updated.

*2023-09-24, version 1.7.1*

Been using the app for about six months, and it’s my default go-to on the iphone. But the edit function doesn’t appear or seem to work. If they fix that, this would be a five star review.

### 3/5 — No more updates

*2023-06-09, version 1.7.1*

It works reliably, doesn't steal any data (unlike some, watch out) and I appreciate that it's open source, but the project isn't being updated (GitHub/metabolist is asking for volunteers to take it over). I'm going to try the official Mastodon app and compare features.

### 4/5 — Development discontinued

*2023-03-28, version 1.7.1*

This was my go-to app from November 2022 until March 2023. The last update was the month I started, so it won’t be able to keep up with the great new apps. I switched to Ice Cubes, but am about to start comparing Ivory and Mammoth. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and the features haven’t moved beyond Metatext yet, too much.

### 4/5 — Development Paused

*2023-02-26, version 1.7.1*

While I am very happy with this app overall, I have since switched to Ice Cubes since Metatext development has paused & seems to be inactive since November 2022

### 4/5 — Fix pending follower location

*2023-01-25, version 1.7.1*

Good app but no way to access pending followers if you back out of that screen. I had to download a completely different Mastadon app to do that

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2023-01-17, version 1.7.1*

I absolutely love that this app collects no data, and allows me to easily post, boost, or respond from multiple Mastodon accounts. It’s free.
However, there are two important features it’s missing for me:
1. I am still keeping the native Mastodon app so I can browse and translate posts in other languages, and
2. I am keeping Mastoot because it allows me to edit posts from the app.
If Metatext had these two features, it would be the best hands-down, and I’d pay for it.
One other feature I would like to see:
3. The ability to change link and hashtag colors, because the dark color currently used against a black background isn’t always easy to see, depending on the phone and ambient brightness.

### 2/5 — Rich in features but intolerably buggy

*2023-01-15, version 1.7.1*

This app has many features not found in others, most notably synchronization of filters. Unfortunately, it produces error messages nearly every time I use it. Most of the messages are too generic to be of any use (e.g. “cancelled”) or simply make no sense (e.g, “network connection lost” when other apps and the website are working just fine.) If this app could be stabilized, it would be my primary Mastodon experience.

### 4/5 — Awesome… but found a bug

*2023-01-15, version 1.7.1*

Love the app itself but I noticed if I put my phone down when on someone’s profile page, the screen doesn’t shut off & drains my battery. I haven’t noticed it on any other tabs yet… but I thought it was worth mentioning. Other than that everything else is great

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Too difficult

*2024-09-28, version 1.7.1*

I have no idea when and how I’m replying, or is it all for public broadcast? I’d jus like to do a cut and paste when I get it all wrong,

### 1/5 — Update: Needs Update

*2024-09-05, version 1.7.1*

This app used to be the best; now it won’t even load images and gives an error message when attempting to post.

### 1/5 — Huh ?

*2023-09-23, version 1.7.1*

All I am trying to do is logout. I’ve never done that and I’m thinking maybe it might help with the glitch I’m constantly getting (Too many requests. Blah blah). Anyway. I logout but it doesn’t seem to me I’m logged out. I can use the site without being logged in ??Weird. How do I log out for real ?? And how do I fix the glitch. (Do I need to mention I’m not a techie). Thx

### 1/5 — Abandoned but good app

*2023-07-07, version 1.7.1*

The GitHub is archived so no more work has been done on the app since November 2022. Good app but I wouldn’t recommend installing anymore.

### 1/5 — Don't use this

*2022-11-21, version 1.6.0*

Zero stars. This is a deliberate limited app that gives new users the impression that Mastodon Fediverse is barren, with limited chances for engagement.

It does by only showing the Home timeline, which only the accounts you follow. Since user search is very limited, overall, new users will naturally have little to no activity.

However, if you log in to the website, you'll have access to the Local timeline (all the accounts in the same instance [server] as your account, Federated (all accounts on all instances connected to yours). This is a lot of data, so select the "slow mode" option in your account settings.

Using the Local and Federated timeline, new accounts to follow will be easy to find, though finding specific accounts is difficult for all Mastodon apps and websites.

Mastodon search is driven by hashtags, so if your follows from other platforms are here, try searching for their username as a hashtag and maybe they've posted that in their bio or as a "toot" (post).

The recommended apps for iOS are Metatext (excellent), and Toot! (good). Tell your Android people to use Tusky.

No one should use this "official" Mastodon app. It's commissioned by the creator of Mastodon and he seems ambivalent, maybe a little hostile, to the new users flooding the platform this "Eternal September, 2022" which is why he keeps this app crappy.

### 1/5 — Never got started

*2022-11-20, version 1.6.0*

I entered my details, to set up an account. I was told to expect an email to say me email address has been verified “within a few minutes” from my chosen server. Nothing at all happened. No email after 36 hours and several further attempts, just the same message on the app every time that I cannot use it without a verified email address. So, I changed servers and started again, only to be told my chosen user name and email address were “already taken”.
I have now given up and deleted the app.

### 1/5 — Awful

*2022-11-19, version 1.6.0*

Just rubbish

### 1/5 — periodic fatal crashes

*2022-11-12, version 1.5.3*

which result in black screen, only way to resolve is re installation

### 1/5 — Totally unable to get support. Error 404

*2022-11-11, version 1.5.3*

Tried this but every time I entered the url it said error 404.
The GitHub page is totally unintelligible to those without a degree in ICT or programming. Metatext email NOT VALID EITHER.
Don’t bother doesn’t work on iPad.

### 2/5 — No longer being developed

*2025-10-22, version 1.7.1*

This was a great app. Sadly the developer is no longer actively developing the app so not sure why it’s still in the App Store. This is now abandonware.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Simple and reliable

*2025-03-08, version 1.7.1*

Ignore the fact that Metatext hasn’t been updated in two years; software doesn’t rot like a banana. This app does what it needs to do, simply and reliably.

### 5/5 — just works smoothly.

*2025-01-07, version 1.7.1*

i’ve used this for a few years at this point, and it’s always reliable, allows all the basic functions I need like adding all text to images. Tracks notifications and best of all it’s free without any spyware or adware.

### 5/5 — Great app but

*2024-12-13, version 1.7.1*

Where’s the developer go? This needs updated before it can be utilized with current fedi software

### 5/5 — If you are new to mastodon, try this

*2023-10-24, version 1.7.1*

The best app for mastodon ever, contains every essential feature and the UI design is minimal. And it’s for free.
I just really hope the developer can come back and update this once in a while, because sometimes the app crashes and pops up an error message.

### 5/5 — Simple & Great

*2023-07-28, version 1.7.1*

One of the best Mastodon apps, way better than the official app.

### 5/5 — Great but needs edit!

*2023-03-27, version 1.7.1*

See title. Edit please.

### 5/5 — Love this app, sadly…

*2023-03-05, version 1.7.1*

I love MetaText so much, so much that I had to give it five stars. Unfortunately, the fact that there will no longer be updates is beginning to affect its functionality in a serious way, at least on my fairly large instance. In particular, I am no longer able to use it to search. If I need to search for anyone or anything, I have to use an alternate app or desktop. This is a fairly recent development. MetaText is so easy to use, I still use it anytime I want to post something on the go or just scroll through my feed or one of my lists. But it no longer fulfills ever need, sadly.

As I understand it, the developer had important, personal reasons for needing to leave it behind, so I certainly wish them the very best. I’ll probably keep MetaText until it no longer posts— I just like it that much.

### 5/5 — The best

*2023-02-04, version 1.7.1*

No fuss, no mess. It works and works well. No extras to pay for…what I like.

### 5/5 — Abandonware?

*2023-01-29, version 1.7.1*

I see the GitHub repo was archived in Nov 22. This is a shame as Metatext is still imo one of the best Masto clients out there. Please please PLEASE do the minor fix to max_characters so Metatext correctly honors the server-provided max toot char limit instead of having it “hard coded” to 500. Beyond that I’m fine with no further updates. 👌🏻

### 5/5 — Very good

*2023-01-17, version 1.7.1*

My favorite mastodon client
