## What is Metronome Hero?

The metronome that listens back.

Metronome Hero is a free rhythm training app for musicians. Play your instrument, tap the screen, or connect MIDI — and see exactly whether you’re early, late, or right on the beat.

All core features are free, including scoring, adaptive tempo, MIDI input, challenges, Band Sync, and session summaries. An optional one-time purchase unlocks the practice calendar with iCloud sync so you can track your progress over time.

REAL-TIME TIMING FEEDBACK
See your notes in six live visualizations: Note Highway, Playhead, Circular, Tube, Spiral, and Scrolling History.

PLAY ANY WAY
Use tap input, microphone detection with automatic gain, or MIDI with latency calibration.

TRAIN SMARTER
Adaptive Tempo increases BPM when accuracy improves and backs off when consistency drops.

BUILD INTERNAL TIME
Practice with click dropouts, backbeat-only modes, random mute cycling, subdivisions, and multiple difficulty levels.

PRACTICE TOGETHER
Band Sync lets groups share the same pulse, compare timing, and improve ensemble groove in real time.

KEEP IT MUSICAL
Choose from drum sounds, instrument voices, scales, chords, and arpeggios.

WORKS WITH YOUR SETUP
Supports Ableton Link, AUv3 hosts, and iCloud sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Review streaks, scoring, timing distribution, and tempo changes after every session.

Metronome Hero is more than a metronome. It’s a rhythm training system for musicians who want stronger groove, better accuracy, and more confidence.

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2026-06-06*

Easy to use, can be calibrated to your system. Visuals are helpful. The free version is already great. Thanks!

### 3/5 — Great concept, too much resistance (updated review)

*2026-05-18*

Was really interested in this app until I saw it was subscription only. Disappointed to see AudioKit Pro going down this route after making a point of no subscriptions to their great range of synth apps. If this app becomes purchasable, I would consider buying and reviewing in more depth.

Edit: I love the concept of this app and want this to succeed. The move to a one off payment is great, although I feel £20 is a little steep.
I have persevered with it and ideally would love to put my AirPods in and have my iPhone pickup the stick to pad inputs. This for me hasn’t yet worked the way I imagined it would, even after going through all the settings.

Edit: I have managed to get it working as described above, you simply go into your sound and haptic settings (indicated in the app), because I was using AirPods, it was defaulting to that mic input, so needed changing with them connected. However, this means whenever I connect my AirPods it will always use my iPhone microphone, which when taking a call for example, would cause issues. It would be ideal if the app picked the input rather than the OS of the device you’re using. So for now I’m going to return to a simple metronome app, where I can just press go and get to work. I have updated my star rating to reflect my current experience.

**Developer response:** Thanks for taking a look, and I completely understand the hesitation.

I’ve actually moved away from the subscription model for this app. All of the core features are now free to use, and there is an optional one-time purchase if you want to keep a long-term history of your practice sessions.

I would love for you to give it another look. I think it now lines up more with what you were expecting.

### 4/5 — More usability from the app now

*2026-05-11*

There is now a better user experience with the app now that the metronome is not buried behind a mandatory subscription service. Too bad other app makers don’t get that. Good on AudioKit for keeping all of their customers in mind.

**Developer response:** I understand where you’re coming from, and I appreciate you taking the time to write this out.

The app is no longer subscription based. All core features are free to use with no time limit. The only paid option is a one-time purchase if you want to keep a long-term history of your practice sessions.

Also, it’s not just tapping. You can play any instrument into the app, including drums, piano, or guitar, and it shows your timing in real time.

If you’re open to it, I’d encourage you to give it another look.

### 4/5 — … AARGH! ….

*2026-05-03*

… OUFFF! ….

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-04-24*

The first trainer to really engage me. It is simple to pick und run with straight away but clearly has ways to increase the challenge. I like the ways feedback is both immediate and collated. Thank you.

### 5/5 — UPDATED TO 5 STAR: So long and thanks for the fish.

*2026-04-20*

Updated review as my concerns no longer exist. Subscription model has been removed by the developer based on feedback. Thank you for listening and responding!!

Original post:
Sadly, another great developer who is normally an insta-buy for me has now been corrupted by the subscription model. Did give it 2 stars because it looks like it is another solid product as usual, just sad to see another loss to the sub drain.

**Developer response:** I hear you — I’m not a fan of subscription overload either.

I actually changed the model based on feedback. The app is now free to use with all core features unlocked. The only paid option is a one-time purchase if you want to keep a long-term history of your practice sessions.

I really appreciate you giving it a try and the kind words about the product itself.

### 1/5 — On first open, I see what looks like a countdown

*2026-04-09*

7 days it says in the subscription tab under settings. I didn’t sign up for a trial. But it seems that by using the app I only get 7 days to tap on a clicking target? So, I have been making music on and off for over 20 years. I have also used all sorts of rhythm trainers and some games that turned out to work like rhythm trainers, like the old game tap revolution, where it was like the console game Rock band but instead of a toy guitar or fake drums kit, you tap on the lanes as the dots race by on screen to a lot of really popular songs. The music was the option you paid for outside of their generic techno soundtrack. So, you got rewarded for paying to play. It wasn’t paying fealty to open an app they created just because you downloaded it to use daily, or just weekends, toilet breaks or,… whenever. Subscription models were something that Apple and some other companies researched the younger generation at the time and found millennials didn’t care about keeping their data on a local device as long as they had access to it by streaming from the cloud or other network based… thing, they’d be willing to pay for it. Or, at least those who were polled for the study said. They also found those from previous generations were more old school because we had this silly idea of owning what we paid for (as that is how commerce and buying from a store works). Now everything and everyone wants to think their product or service is worth a portion of the finite amount of money we work hard to earn. If they tell it to you in a per month amount it doesn’t sound so bad as yearly does. $30 is what I am seeing the annual listed as at this time of year writing this while they are offering an intro until May something.

The problem is, this is just tapping. There are plenty of free rhythm trainers out there for iOS. I have 2 different completely free ones made by music device and app makers that are great and eleven offer watch integration for percussionists. I would have paid a reasonable flat one-time fee for that. All of AudioKits other apps I have waited for their release like people waited for new iPhones to come out early on. Get in on the app early and you are rewarded as early adopters with a low intro rate. Some were only available for a certain time, which seemed limiting. But subscription models are a slap in the face, and they seem to get more ridiculous each time a company says, “I bet people are silly enough to pay this.”. I liked all but one app prior to this release from AudioKit. But this lost me. It’s just tapping and there are other professional apps out there for free. The argument of people want paid to make the app is valid. I’ve paid for the apps. I have paid for apps that have awesome upgrades. But I pay once for the the products. There isn’t really a way to make tapping on glass interesting enough or different every month for the life of the app. Plenty of people have learned how to keep a beat and made money doing it long before someone slapped a pay wall on it.

**Developer response:** I understand where you’re coming from, and I appreciate you taking the time to write this out.

### 5/5 — We Got the Beat!

*2026-04-05*

Finally, there’s a metronome app that makes practice fun! I love the visuals and the way that the beats can drop out and vary in speed. It forces me to pay attention and keep my rhythmic chops up! way to go!

### 2/5 — So long and thanks for the fish.

*2026-04-04*

Sadly, another great developer who is normally an insta-buy for me has now been corrupted by the subscription model. Did give it 2 stars because it looks like it is another solid product as usual, just sad to see another loss to the sub drain.

### 5/5 — Metronome Hero!

*2026-04-04*

Engaging App. Addictive. A Must-Have for Musicians of All Levels!

Other Improvements
- Groove editor now displays time signature names for easier editing
- Better MIDI drum pattern import from any channel

### 1.1 — 2026-07-14

Practice Real Grooves — Play along with real drum patterns instead of a simple click. Explore rock, hip-hop, Latin rhythms, shuffles, and more while seeing your timing in real time with live notation.

New “Hard” Difficulty — By popular demand, Hard mode bridges the gap between Mid and Pro for players ready to tighten up without jumping to pro-level precision.

Quest For Groove Patterns — Practice grooves from questforgroove.com’s beginner course, with more patterns coming soon.

Presets Sync via iCloud — Your custom presets now follow you automatically across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Lock Your Visualization — Prevent accidental view changes while practicing.

Plus notation improvements and stability fixes.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-05-01

Improved accuracy and bug fixes at very slow tempos.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-04-21

Small UI enhancements and the ability to save the shift-click setting within presets.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-04-16

Two new ways to sharpen your timing.

Practice Timer — Set a duration and let the metronome handle the rest. Perfect for focused warm-ups, timeboxed practice blocks, or finally honoring “just ten more minutes.”

Shift the Click — An advanced internal-time exercise: keep playing on the downbeat while the click moves to the e, and, or a. Train yourself to feel the pulse instead of relying on hearing downbeat clicks.
