## What is MetroNow DC?

When is my train? MetroNow DC answers in one glance — and keeps answering all the way to the platform.

Arrivals come straight from WMATA's track circuits, the same hardware signals that run the railroad — not GPS guesses. MARC and VRE commuter rail are built in, every train in the region moves on a live map, and a Lock Screen countdown follows your train so you don't have to keep checking your phone.

REAL-TIME ARRIVALS
Boarding, arriving, and minute-by-minute countdowns for every Metrorail station. The board refreshes faster as your train gets close, and rolling numerals tick down in place.

TRACK ANY TRAIN
Follow any departure on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island — even scheduled trains 30+ minutes out. The countdown updates by push, so it stays live while your phone is in your pocket.

LIVE SYSTEM MAP
Watch every train in the system move in real time. Tap any train or station to jump straight to its board.

MARC & VRE COMMUTER RAIL
All 61 MARC and VRE stations: live delays and cancellations, service alerts, journey timelines, Lock Screen tracking, and dedicated live maps for both systems.

SYSTEM STATUS
How each line is really running — measured headways, "gaps forming" or "recovering," and callouts naming the stations where riders are actually stuck. Not just the alerts: the numbers behind them.

CROWDING, BEFORE YOU BOARD
The first train after a long service gap has been collecting riders the whole time. Your board says so before the doors open.

JOURNEY VIEW
Tap any train to see its full run on a map, with live position from track circuits. Swipe the timeline to peek at exact clock arrival times for every station.

PLAN AHEAD
Tomorrow's full timetable one tap away, the last trains of the day flagged, and To DC / Outbound filters for busy boards.

HOME SCREEN WIDGETS
Your station's next trains at a glance — one tap opens the board.

HONEST DATA
Real-time numbers and estimates are never mixed silently: anything not confirmed by WMATA's own board is clearly marked with ~. And when a feed goes down, MetroNow says so instead of guessing.

No account. No ads. Just the next train.

### 5/5 — Excellent and Much Needed

*2026-05-17*

This is a great app to check as you are walking towards the station to see if you are making the next train. The other option is to go on WMATA website and then search for it there, which is not convenient. This app is great , highly recommend.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.1 — 2026-10-28

Where to? Type a station, a place or an address and the board keeps the trains that get you there — with a change when that's the way, like Silver to Metro Center then Red to Rockville. Choose Fastest, Balanced or Fewest changes in the Where to? sheet or in Settings. The journey shows both trains and ends where you get off; for a place it ends on the place itself, with the walk. A minute on foot counts as two, so the station next to your destination wins over a long walk from a nearer line.

Also: the walk to the station is a capsule you can tap for directions. The widget carries on from the timetable between updates instead of going blank. A Silver train WMATA labels Blue no longer shows as Blue, and no longer opens a false service gap on the Status page.

### 1.6.0 — 2026-10-13

Going to: pick where you're headed and the board keeps only the trains that go there, with your arrival time under each one. It remembers your choice for every station.
Can you still catch it? Walking to the station, the board shows the walk to the entrance and greys out the trains you can't reach in time.
Opens to your nearest station, measured to its nearest entrance. Pick another any time; the next open is back on the nearest.
Your direction first. The board learns which way you ride in the morning and in the evening and puts that direction on top. Pin a direction to override it.
A better widget: one row per destination with the trains after it, narrowed to the direction you ride, with car counts, a refresh button and how long ago it updated. A Nearest Station widget follows you around.
Press and hold a train's time to track it. Lock Screen tracking is on by default, the ride shows its stop count from the start, and your Apple Watch shows the minutes.

MARC and VRE boards get the same destination list as Metro.

Plus: a one-question first launch, the right line colors at Yellow and Silver stations WMATA's list missed, and the departing train stays on the board at terminals.

### 1.5.2 — 2026-09-20

TAP THE COUNTDOWN TO TRACK
The countdown on any train is the Track button now. Tap it and that train follows you to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. Tap again to stop.

PICKIER CROWDING NOTES
The "likely crowded" note on the first train after a long gap now checks how full that train usually runs at that hour, from WMATA's own ridership counts. You'll see fewer of them, and they'll mean more.

TELL IT WHERE YOU'RE GETTING OFF
After you tap Track, pick your stop. Once you're on board, the Lock Screen counts the stops you have left, and your phone alerts you when yours is next, even through a Focus. It shows on Apple Watch too.

GAME DAYS
When there's a home game by your station, the board says so before and after, so a packed platform isn't a surprise. Swipe to hide a note you don't need.

A CLEARER LIVE MAP
Where lines share track, each one now draws as its own colored line, side by side, with every train on its own line.

ALSO
The journey view has a cleaner layout, and when WMATA's timetable for a train disagrees with the board, the minutes follow the board. Each row shows up to three following trains. The board reopens on the platform you last used. Settings has Rate and Send Feedback links.

If you submit a build for this version, archive from the current tree, not build 96. Build 96 predates the crowding card, so its in-app What's New wouldn't match these notes. The tree is still at build number 96, so bump it to 97 first. I can do the bump and commit it if you want.

### 1.5.1 — 2026-08-17

STOP REMINDERS
Open your train's journey and press and hold the station where you're getting off — before you board or after you've settled in. Nothing sits on your screen, but as your stop comes up next, your phone alerts you, even through a Focus. When the ride's done, the reminder tidies itself away.

POTOMAC YARD, PROPERLY
A data gap meant boarding trains at Potomac Yard could vanish from the board and reminders around it fired a stop early. Fixed — the station is now first-class everywhere.

LOCK SCREEN TRACKING
Your tracked train's countdown follows it all the way onto the platform — Boarding while it boards, gone the moment it leaves. A train turning around at the end of its line no longer carries your tracking onto its return trip.

FAVORITES
Every station keeps its own cached board, so switching favorites paints instantly. Pull to refresh always refreshes, and a refreshing board says "Updating…" instead of flashing "Cached".

### 1.5.0 — 2026-08-08

MetroNow's biggest update yet.

MARC & VRE COMMUTER RAIL
All 61 MARC and VRE stations join the app: live delays and cancellations, service alerts, journey timelines with a moving train marker, Lock Screen tracking, and a dedicated live map for each system. Rail boards are schedule-first with a live overlay, so a delayed train shows its real time — not a guess — and cancelled trains stay visible instead of silently vanishing.

LIVE SYSTEM MAP
Watch every train move across the system in real time. Tap any train or station to jump straight to its board.

HOME SCREEN WIDGETS
Your station's next trains at a glance — one tap opens the board.

SYSTEM STATUS
How each line is really running: measured headways, "gaps forming" or "recovering," and callouts naming the stations where riders are stuck. Gap sizes come straight from the board — measured, never estimated.

CROWDING, BEFORE YOU BOARD
The first train after a long service gap has been collecting riders the whole time. Your board now says so.

TRACK ANY DEPARTURE
Follow any Metro or rail train on your Lock Screen — even scheduled departures 30+ minutes out. Estimated times are clearly marked with ~, so you always know which numbers are confirmed and which are projections.

PLAN AHEAD
Tomorrow's full timetable one tap away, last trains of the day flagged, and To DC / Outbound filters for busy boards.

POLISHED EVERYWHERE
Rolling countdowns that tick down in place, better readability in direct sunlight, a refined dark mode, richer haptics, and Liquid Glass touches on iOS 26.

RELIABILITY
Dozens of tracking fixes from real rides across the system. The Lock Screen countdown now ends cleanly the moment your train departs — and never quietly switches to the train behind it.
