## What is Mettle?

Mettle is a free walking game where your steps are the weapon. Invite your friends to create a party of heroes that encounter monsters. Every real-world step you take deals damage, and defeating monsters earns you coins. Exchange coins to recruit fun heroes, like mage, swordsman, archer, and bard. Level up your heroes by walking to deal more damage per step.

How it works:
- Select your starting hero to level up. When you walk in real life, you deal damage to monsters.
- Create a party and battle side by side with your friends anywhere.
- Deal with fun monster encounters. One minor monster every day, and a super boss every Sunday.
- Steps sync from Apple Health and strike the monster automatically, even while the app is closed.
- Collect a roster of heroes across 16+ lines, feed them XP from your walking, and evolve them into rarer forms.
- Climb the leaderboard with daily and weekly fun competition that rewards the biggest walker.
- Earn and spend coins and embers to recruit heroes and buy potions: an economy fed entirely by walking.
- No ads. Just you, your friends, and lots of walking!

Note from the creator: Hey, I’m Daniel, and I built Mettle to motivate my family and friends to walk more and stay active. The first week of testing was a complete success. Everyone was hooked and genuinely making an effort to walk more to defeat the monsters together, level up their heroes, and climb the leaderboard. I designed and built Mettle entirely on my own. My goal now is to share it with any group that wants to stay active together. Happy walking!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.2 — 2026-08-22

Thanks to everyone who recently joined Mettle! I built this app to challenge my friends and family to walk more, and then published it to the App Store so other groups can join. It makes me really happy that so many people are enjoying the game!

I've been trying my best to prevent players from exploiting step logging, and I'm working on a better solution. A few upcoming updates:
- New heroes and encounters. Images take a while to get right, so please be patient.
- Global encounters. Monsters we can defeat together as a community!
- Sunday boss rework. More challenging and with better rewards.
- Hero images refresh. Some are better than others, so I'll update them for consistency.
- Android support. So no one is left out!

Feel free to reach out to me via email if you have any feedback/ideas (you can find it on the App Store page).

### 1.4 — 2026-08-20

- Performance improvements and some minor bugs fixed
- All-time damage fixed: if yours ever reset or showed less than your lifetime steps, it now repairs itself on launch. Check Leaderboard > All time — your total should be at least your lifetime steps.
- Limits: impossible days no longer count or rank. Steps now credit at a human pace per hour, need real recorded distance behind them, and cap at 40,000/day. Normal walking should feel unchanged.
- Late syncs are safe: a Watch that uploads the whole day at night should still count every step.

### 1.3 (5) — 2026-08-12

Evolving your hero now responds the moment you tap, and your step count is fairer to everyone walking for it.

- Tap Evolve! and the button confirms right away while your hero transforms.
- Only steps your iPhone or Apple Watch actually recorded count toward damage, XP and the leaderboard.

Take a walk, evolve a hero mid-day, and check that your damage and leaderboard position match the steps you really walked.

### 1.02 — 2026-08-08

Fixes
- The hero picker on your profile now scrolls properly. If you have a lot of
heroes tied for top damage, you can reach the whole list and the Close button.
- Long player names no longer squash the damage numbers on the leaderboard.
Names are shortened instead, and every figure lines up in the same column.

### 1.01 — 2026-08-06

- Bug fixes
- Change your highlighted hero in your Profile
