## What is midiGATEs?

midiGATEs midi probability is an Audio Unit v3 MIDI Effect and CoreMIDI capable app. midiGATEs listens to MIDI input and based on random chance mutes some of the incoming notes to make a busy, repetitive stream of notes a little more interesting and sparser. It has four modes:
Gate Mode - One set percentage to be muted for all notes. Also includes Gate On Repeats (when a note passes through unmuted, also pass through X more notes after) and Gate Off Repeats (when a note does not pass through the gate, also mute the next X notes) to make things a little more interesting.
Note Mode - Each note in the scale (C, C#, D etc) has its own percentage chance to mute incoming notes.
Sequencer Mode - Every eight notes has a different percentage chance to be muted. Can also change the sequence length to be less than eight.
Thru Mode - Nothing is muted, normally not used but there if you need it.
If midiGATEs is inserted as an AUv3 MIDI effect in a supported host such as Audiobus or AUM it should setup and work automatically. If you wish to use it without an Audio Unit host you can toggle the CoreMIDI input and output and use it that way.

## Key features

- Random MIDI note muting
- Four distinct muting modes
- Gate On/Off Repeats for dynamic control
- Note-specific muting percentages
- Sequencer-based muting patterns
- CoreMIDI and AUv3 support

### 5/5 — Great utility

*2026-02-10*

I am having trouble running more then one instance of this in AUM
I am trying to connect a midiLFO to control each instance and it only uses the same LFO for both
I am very thankful for this useful auv3…. Now I wish it could also randomize the velocity of incoming MIDI … I wish it could handle a matrix of 16 MIDI channels separately
So you would only need one instance of this running in AUM but drive multiple different instruments on sepychannels

I hope the creator will add a velocity randomizer to this or create an auv3 that does… thank you

### 5/5 — Great tool for midi sequencing

*2024-08-30*

This app really makes compositions better when used with midi sequencers. It helps make things more interesting because less notes is usually better. -Please continue to support Midigates.

### 5/5 — Awesome if you know how

*2023-03-14*

Awesome if you know how to use it. Adds a great deal of humanization to self-generative MIDI.

### 5/5 — Please update this app to 16 to 32 gates

*2022-07-10*

I love this app. It is an essential part of my compositional process but 8 gates are not enough. If this app can be updated to 16 or 32 gates and have CC control on the parameters it would be PERFECT!!!

### 5/5 — Great app, great dev

*2022-03-20, version 2.1.0*

App is simple to use, creates musical iterations of eg a simple arpeggio, and nicely fills a niche. Dev responded to a question I had within minutes! You can’t ask for more than that for a few £s.

### 5/5 — AUM force multiplier

*2020-03-28*

20200327: If I open a midi channel in AUM, then I just automatically add at least two instances of midiGATE to it after the midi-generator. It works great to daisy chain midiGATEs too. Never seen more than a minuscule accretion to the DSP percentage from stacking these things in multiple midi channels. A.K. makes good stuff. Wonder if midiSTEPs is going to get some update love soon as well?

### 5/5 — Great app! Essential for sequencing

*2020-01-19*

Since I bought this app I have used it daily. I usually have five or six instances going in AUM. Works great, no crashes. Perfect for taking complex midi phrases and filtering out notes to make it more sparse and random. This is such important little app, opens up a ton of possibilities.

### 4/5 — Fantastic, but a little bit buggy!

*2019-09-27*

Lots of crashes on ApeMatrix, and usually in complex project that utilize the AUv3, loading the project after creating it leads to the plugin crashing and unable to reload automatically, forcing you to add another instance manually and reconfigure it. Tedious.

As for the rest? What can I say? This is just magical, I use it a lot in the same way other comments describe. It’s particularly amazing when combined with a sequencer, as it can lead to fantastic “procedural” variation of a loop. Fantastic for drum tracks, but can be used on anything really, especially also for ambience stuff.

Since apparently the dev is focusing on AUv3 support now, I’m sure stability will increase. When it does, i will give this the damned 10 stars it deserves, out of five that is.

### 5/5 — 5 stars!!

*2019-09-15*

Edit sept 2019
Au v3 support added! Get this thing already. Thanks developer!

This app is now vital and indispensable in my workflow. Highly recommend!

To the developer, any plans for making this an Audio Unit (au v3) for use directly with AUM?

## Frequently asked questions about midiGATEs

### What is midiGATEs?

midiGATEs is a CoreMIDI and Audio Unit v3 MIDI Effect application designed to introduce random muting to incoming MIDI notes. It helps make repetitive note streams more interesting and sparser by selectively silencing notes based on various probability settings.

### How does midiGATEs work?

midiGATEs listens to MIDI input and applies a set of rules to randomly mute some of the incoming notes. It offers different modes like Gate Mode, Note Mode, and Sequencer Mode, each with unique ways to control the probability of muting.

### What are the different modes in midiGATEs?

midiGATEs features Gate Mode (a single mute percentage for all notes), Note Mode (individual percentages per note in a scale), Sequencer Mode (different percentages for every eight notes), and Thru Mode (no muting).

### Can midiGATEs be used with other music apps?

Yes, midiGATEs is designed to work as an AUv3 MIDI effect within supported hosts like Audiobus and AUM. It can also be used independently by toggling its CoreMIDI input and output.

### What devices does midiGATEs support?

midiGATEs is supported on iPhone, iPad, and iPod. It is rated for ages 4 and up.

### How much does midiGATEs cost?

midiGATEs is available for a one-time purchase of $3.99. There are no in-app purchases or subscriptions required.

### When was midiGATEs last updated?

The latest version of midiGATEs, 2.1.0, was last updated on March 16, 2020. It was originally released on April 20, 2017.

### Does midiGATEs have ads?

No, midiGATEs does not contain advertisements. It is a paid application with no ads or in-app purchases.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.1.0 — 2020-03-16

Changed app name to "midiGATEs probability" to distinguish from my midiFILTr volca apps
Added a time sync option to the sequencer gate, so it can work based on time step (all notes treated the same during that particular 1/8 note step in time) rather than note step (each note treated separately)
Added an animation to show the current active step in sequencer mode
Added a color animation to the current gate type button to show when a note is passed through (white) or muted (black)
Added AU user shared presets
Fixed weird font change
Misc other fixes and improvements

### 2.0.1 — 2019-11-09

Fixed crash when re-loading AU in Sequence mode.
Added "gate" to AU name to make it easier to remember.
Misc fixes.

### 2.0.0 — 2019-09-04

Added AUv3 MIDI Effect support
Future updates to this app will focus on Apple's Audio Unit v3 MIDI Effect format rather than the AudioBus effect format. AUv3s are very well supported by AudioBus so using future versions of the app shouldn't be a problem, but you should probably start choosing to use the AUv3 version in your AB projects for future compatibility
Updated to latest Audiobus
Other misc fixes and updates

### 1.0.1 — 2017-05-04

Bug fixes for iPhone

### 1.0 — 2017-04-20

No release notes.
