Needs UI makeover. *2016-07-24* Maybe if I were on something bigger than an iPad Mini I would find this sequencer easy to use. It certainly has enough features to keep a music geek busy for a very long time. But the interface looks to be made for a very large desktop computer monitor: shadows and highlights on tiny buttons and even a script font for some of the function labels. Clearly someone labored painstakingly over these details. Unfortunately, I cannot use it without constant zooming and scrolling and zooming and scrolling, which completely kills the creative flow for me. There is a lot packed into the screen; the UI really needs to be redone in a more minimal style to make it work as a mobile app. I'm not at all a fan of extreme minimalism as a UI style--please keep the colors! Please don't give me orange or light gray on white!--but add a leavening of flatness and sans-serif fonts and I'll put that fifth star up. ### 4/5 — The best of 16 step sequencers by far *2015-11-17* So many options it isn't the easiest to use but its well designed and looks great. After putting in half an hour or so this gives the power to explore the sequencing possibilities of your favorite synth. Soon to go universal, cant wait. Thanks Anthony ### 4/5 — Inspiring and well thought out *2014-12-10* This app gets better and better. Its design is shaped by real musical experience, and it's quickly evolving into one of the best sequencers on the iOS platform. It's far more powerful and easier to use than the hardware sequencers used by Tangerine Dream in the 1970s and 80s. Compared with modern, software-based sequencers, it's slightly less powerful than Thesys, but also MUCH easier to get started and play with. As it says in the description, it doesn't make any sound by itself, but it will breathe new life into the instruments you already have, both hardware and on your iPad. About the in-app purchases (IAPs): the developer, Anthony Saunders, is NOT trying to nickel and dime his customers. If you're interested in the extra functions, they are worth more than what he's charging. But the basic app is robust, functional, and inspiring. About the four stars: I'm pleased with this app -- that's why I'm taking the time to write a review -- but if you give everything five stars, you have nothing left for the very best. Immediately accessible, yet powerfully deep. The developer is constantly making updates to improve an already great app. Highly recommend! ### 5/5 — Excellent sequencer! *2014-05-03* Loving the latest update with the ability to automate 4 MIDI CC's...solid clock, great interface, very cool for controlling your synths and effects! ### 5/5 — Great Virtual MIDI controller for synth/music apps *2014-04-10* This app is a cool, modern twist on an analog style MIDI panel that looks like something out of the early 80's. The app itself plays no music, but easily links up with (most) popular synthesizers and other Virtual MIDI compatible music apps. The default is 4/4 time and 16 steps, but this can be modified. Each step is set to a note, or skipped over. There are also multiple MIDI channels, so you could actually have different steps playing notes from 2 or more synthesizers in the background. And there are a variety of features that are over my head, but are sure to thrill MIDI experts more knowledgeable than I. One of my favorite new features in version 1.5 is the introduction of scales. At present, you have chromatic, major, and minor scales, with more to come in the future. This means that you can draw the sliders in sequence so that only in-key notes will play. Great idea for music composition. And, of course, since the machine is automated, it's capable of playing sequences more accurately and faster than would be humanly possible, especially on an iPad touchscreen. I would note that the current version is not compatible with AudioBus or IAA. That means that you can't access mini-controls for your recording app while you are in Midisequencer. However, you can start the sequence and access the controls while in the AB-compatible app, and there also ways to synchronize timing using MIDI itself. The developer is very responsive and has indicated that AudioBus compatibility is coming in the next update. Great product that can bring new life out of other music apps! ### 5/5 — Surprise package *2014-04-09* Quite unassuming at first glance but this app offers a great deal by way of sequencing duties. Very flexible indeed and I can tell a lot of effort as gone into this. It runs in the background and works well over virtual MIDI. I like it :-) Update: WOW what an update! Some superb features added and so in keeping with the original design of this app. Excellent. ### 5/5 — Great first release! *2014-01-21* Already my go to midi step sequencer for iPad (no reason to add audiobus!). Solid immediacy with all the fundamentals including note, velocity, and gate, with the capability to sequence 2 lanes of cc's as well. My wish list for future update would be 1) Discretely variable # of steps per parameter lane, 2) Ability to 'tie' notes to make longer than step value notes and perhaps glide, 3) Multi channel would be nice...at least one more channel to add some counterpoint, 4) Constrain scale would be fun. Crashes most times when I try to use it. Not sure how it can be used. ### 1/5 — Can't get full screen on 6s *2016-01-23* There are 3 screen size choices, none of which fills the whole app in the screen on a 6s. Buttons are extremely tiny which makes it difficult to use. This should have been for iPad only, I can't see using it at all always toggling screens where you either get a half screen of the full app(look at the picture), the top part, or the bottom. I may have well tossed my money out the window. I rarely give negative reviews, but this is ridiculous. ### 3/5 — Pretty damned good. *2016-04-04* Used with external synths like iM1 or iSEM it works beautifully. The only sequencer which trumps this (there are a few which are in the same league) is Cream Mobile. Which is the best as a VST as well. Crashes upon start. ### 3/5 — Good, but not great *2015-01-11* I like the fact that this sequencer works with Audiobus, (after the snafus following iOS8's release). But it'd be nice if it had a page for each sequencer track. Instead you have to assign each note to a track, so the first beat can only be played by track #1, etc. 64 step would also be nice, instead it has only 16, (each step length can be multiplied, e.g., x2, x3, etc). Not a bad app, but I'll save the five star rating for the sequencer that most resembles my QY-100. :) ### 3/5 — Not really *2015-01-09* Don't really like this app although it allows using other synth sources. There are a few seqs out that work better and the vir synth apps work much better within their app. If it were the only seq I had it may rate higher but I like a number of other apps for serious song development. But it would be a whole lot better if there was some kind of tutorial. There is a manual available via the devs website. But a quick start option would be helpful. I have no idea what I'm doing. Also, why doesn't the app quit when told to? It has to be manually swiped from memory. I set the velocity to open the cutoff on my nyborg12 synth and it’s an instant Depeche Mode... Repeats, note probability and velocity variation percentages also. 16 step clips can be instantly loaded on the fly opening up the possibility of live use. An excellent sequencer. ### 5/5 — Amazing. A must own. *2016-02-19* There's almost too much awesome in this app. It's very easy to just noodle for ever. Though k think that was one of the intentions. The chord IAP is definitely worth it. Particularly with the brilliant Strum effects (set a chord and then set how it will be drawn out over time. Can do a quick 'strum' as the name would imply but can also spread the notes out for over a measure depending on the interval you set. I find the effects setup sort of confusing but otherwise most everything is pretty straight forward; which is amazing considering just how much sequencer is packed into this app. ### 5/5 — Recommended *2015-12-11* A versatile and great value little app. In an instant you'll be sending creative patterns to your iOS or midi synth. Smile. ### 5/5 — Great Sequencer for Performing! *2015-08-01* I’ve been looking for a powerful Sequencer for the iPad that has a simp[le interface for Live Performance etc… and midiSequencer fits the bill perfectly! If you are looking to compose and arrange entire songs you may want to look elsewhere as this is being sold as a 16 Step Software version of an Analogue Sequencer and it does a great job at it! MIDI to and from iPad Instruments and External MIDI Sources and Controllers makes this a great tool in the Musical Toy box! I can’t wait to see how it mixes it up with my two external Hardware Sequencers on my Minimoog! Running in the background is awesome. ### 5/5 — Very sweet full featured MIDI Sequencer *2015-04-14* This app is the "real deal" for MIDI sequence exploration! Just check out the 96p manual to see all the features. If you want to go even further, the inexpensive IAPs 99c provide midi FX and chord+. I would suggest to set default values for drawing=ON to make initial entry easier and the Cycle reset also ON which is what I think most people would expect.
