## What is Mindwtr?

Your head keeps reminding you of things at the worst times. Mindwtr gives them a safe home.

Mindwtr (pronounced "mind water") is a free, open-source to-do app built on the Getting Things Done (GTD) method. Write down every task and idea the moment it appears, sort it in seconds, and see only what you can do right now. No account, no subscription, and your data stays on your device.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Dump it. A task, an idea, a worry: type it or speak it, and it lands in your Inbox.
2. Sort it. A short guided pass: do it now, schedule it, hand it off, or shelve it for someday.
3. Do it. The Focus view shows only what you can act on right now, nothing else.
4. Reset weekly. A guided review catches loose ends, so the list stays trustworthy and your head stays clear.

New to GTD? The idea is simple: your head is for having ideas, not for holding them. Mindwtr walks you through every step.

WHY MINDWTR

- Works completely offline. No account required.
- Your tasks stay on your device. Sync is optional and you choose where: Dropbox, a folder you control, WebDAV, your own server, or iCloud on Apple devices.
- The full GTD method built in: Inbox, Next, Waiting For, Someday/Maybe, Projects, Areas, Contexts, and reviews.
- Capture from anywhere: quick add, widgets, sharing from other apps, or voice.
- Plan your way: list, calendar, and kanban board views.
- Reminders, repeating tasks, checklists, Markdown notes, and attachments.
- Import from Todoist, TickTick, OmniFocus, and more.
- Free and open source. No ads or lock-in.

SIMPLE BY DEFAULT, POWERFUL WHEN YOU NEED IT

Fewer fields, fewer knobs, no clutter. Advanced tools, like the kanban board, automation, and an optional AI assistant that uses your own AI account, stay out of sight until you want them.

Mindwtr means "mind like water": the calm you get when nothing is rattling around in your head.

## Key features

- Zero friction task capture
- GTD workflow integration
- Hierarchical project organization
- Visual Kanban boards
- Guided weekly review
- Offline-first functionality

### 2/5 — Nice idea plagued with bugs

*2026-08-03*

I like what the app is trying to do, would have loved it if it wasn’t so buggy. The most egregious of the bugs being tasks returning after being marked complete or not following the rules I’ve set making it unusable for the time being.

**Developer response:** You hit a real bug in 1.1.5, not something in your setup: an iOS build error made every database save fail silently, so completed tasks and other changes could revert on the next launch. Version 1.1.6 fixes this. If anything still comes back after updating, please report it at github.com/dongdongbh/Mindwtr/issues and I'll dig in.

### 5/5 — So good once you learn the GTD system

*2026-06-29*

I struggled with normal todo lists for years, and by chance found this app and the GTD system it’s based on.

I would love a lock screen widget that shows the current focused task. But this app is also open source so if someone isn’t already working on it I guess I’m going to learn Swift :)

**Developer response:** Thank you — this review made my day, especially the offer to learn Swift! You won't need to: the lock screen widget you described is built and coming in the next release. It shows your current focused task (a rectangular widget, an inline line above the clock, or a circular counter) and taps through to the Focus screen. We track it here: github.com/dongdongbh/Mindwtr/issues/821 — if you have specific ideas about what it should show (due time, project, counts), please drop a comment on that issue. Requirements from people actually working the GTD system are exactly what shape Mindwtr.

### 5/5 — Helps you stay focused.

*2026-06-11*

By default this app only shows the task being worked on instead of everything at once! This is amazing for not getting distracted by massive todo lists.

Takes some diligence at first to sort and label tasks. (it includes some tools to help prioritize)

Also, this is local-only by default, with option to turn on iCloud and other syncs.

Simple without all the extra junk no one actually uses. And no garbage AI!

### 4/5 — It’s a real GTD app!

*2026-02-22*

I’m really encouraged by this REAL ‘Getting Things Done’ methodology app. It gets so many things right that other productivity apps attempt (but fall short).

Mindwtr is fully featured and does not sit behind a paywall. It’s well designed and offers a solid experience on launch.

I’ve already donated to the dev and expect great things for this tool in the future.
