It succeeded as a quick 10 minute time kill once and a while especially when offline (air travel, poor connection, etc.). The recent updates force you to watch a long losing animation every time you hit a mine. And mind you, this is not the kind of Microsoft-style minesweeper where the first click is a guaranteed space with 0 mines adjacent to it. Meaning you often have to watch the animation a lot before you get a decent run going + click through UI. The controls are intuitive and pretty clean, though there is an exploit where you can test whether a mine is present by clicking between tiles in just the right way. I only recently found this and it is a bit risky since if there is a mine and your click is off you risk losing. But yeah I will explore my options now and find a new cheap minesweeper game that doesnt ask for a premium subscription (this one does now!). if there isn’t such a thing I will literally just vibecode a Minesweeper-like game into existence and distribute it for free because this is stupid ### 2/5 — Dark Days *2025-08-01, version 4.0.0* Latest version is riddled with ads and some features are locked behind a paywall. ### 1/5 — Werbung? Good Bye! ### 2/5 — Ruined *2025-07-09, version 4.0.0* Loved this game, had it for years, it’s now been ruined by ads, requiring a subscription to remove them, and the subscription is also needed to unlock difficulty levels and themes. I am uninstalling and will look for another version that isn’t a money grab. Shame as the game itself works perfectly in this version. ### 1/5 — Dishonest App Developer *2025-06-27, version 4.0.0* I paid for this app in 2010, and now the developer has converted it into an ad-filled cesspool with a subscription fee of $9.99 per year. On top of that, the app is now buggy, whereas it used to function flawlessly. Attempting to place flags on squares often causes nearby existing flags to turn into question marks, making it likely that you activate a mine rather than flag it. So basically, the paid app was loaded with bugs and then converted to a subscription model. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to avoid downloading any app from this developer, especially one with a “one-time” fee. I hope this developer’s money grab for an already-paid-for app backfires on them magnificently and causes them to lose future subscribers. ### 1/5 — Unskippable 30 second ads *2025-06-08, version 4.0.0* I’ve had this app since high school and it’s hands down been the best minesweeper app of all. Now, almost 15 years later, they’ve added 30 second to 1-minute unskippable ads that basically make the app insufferable to use. Deleting from my devices and never installing again. The most recent upgrade is a shock - now you are met at the splash screen with links to comprehensive (and invasive) privacy policies and apparently a subscription requirement. This is not an upgrade but a product change and it’s disingenuous to list it as a simple update. The privacy policy is vague and gives enormous rights to the company. Since then I’ve never needed another Minesweeper app because it was unquestionably the best. No ads, a clean and classic appearance. It was everything I wanted and needed. I don’t trust the company at all not to raise their price or require some mandatory ads even after paying, so why would I even start down that path? During that time, it was, as promised, a perfect mobile experience of the classic Minecraft game. Also they’ve put in advertising and paid unlocks. The developers have abandoned their vision of bringing classic Minesweeper to mobile and are trying to scrape a dollar out of their long time users. Received error message to “configure email in settings” This is the only phone game I have ever spent money on. Bought it in 2010 - had finally found a good version of minesweeper. I don’t play often, but it was always my go-to on flights. I just opened it because I was curious about the recent update. I see that now they want you to subscribe, or you can keep your basic version…okay - I’ll stick with the basics - minesweeper is not about frills. Then I see that I’m going to have to play with an ad bar at the bottom?! Well that’s annoying, but let’s try… Try to start a game and a full video ad starts?!
