### 3/5 — App abandoned by developer

*2024-01-26, version 9.0*

I am editing my original review of this app (which was stellar, it IS the best I have used by far) because it has been completely abandoned by the developer and there is no support whatsoever. It would be one thing if it were a one time, lifelong access purchase, but is an expensive subscription and you lose access to your completed chapters the moment you stop paying.
I started using the app in 2014-2015, the only update I saw was a couple lessons added when devs had to overhaul their apps for iOS13 or lose compatibility. At that time Mirai devs saw the reviews and realized they had to give us something.
I have tried contacting them twice before committing to a 6 months subscription (less expensive than month-to-month), I never got a reply.

### 3/5 — Bar far the best

*2021-11-20, version 9.0*

Are you still supporting this? Please put the flash cards back.

### 4/5 — Romanji again?

*2021-07-26, version 9.0*

I tried many sources, and so far this is a very well organizes app. However, why do the quizzes use english letters (romanji) when we are studying Japanese? This is counterproductive and annoying.

### 3/5 — Very helpful but there’s just one problem

*2021-01-14, version 9.0*

I like mirai Japanese. I use it to learn grammar as well as vocab. The interface is neat and intuitive and the lessons are comprehensive however it would be very helpful if there was a way to take tests to check your grammar skills. It’s good that it has a quizz section for vocab, hiragana and katakana. But I find myself wishing the exams focused on grammar as well. It would be very useful if there was a section that quizzes what you understand from each lesson regarding the grammar. The exams are always about vocab and the number of syllables in a word but I want my grammar skills to be checked as well

### 5/5 — Made learning easier

*2021-01-06, version 9.0*

I love the thorough explanation of each word taught and in the quiz section is a bonus. Love it.

### 5/5 — Amazingly good and underrated

*2021-01-05, version 9.0*

This app brought me from a very beginner level to an intermediate beginner in the span of about a week (and for anyone wondering, thats extremely good), I only wish that I lived in an alternate dimension where they hadn’t stopped updating it almost 7 years ago. Still, super worth it and super cheap for its worth.

### 5/5 — Best app to learn Japanese ever

*2020-11-26, version 9.0*

Love it .

### 5/5 — ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

*2020-10-28, version 9.0*

it teaches you sentences in like the second lesson and it’s really easy to learn I would also recommend getting a piece of paper (not your phone cause you take in more information when you physically write something down) and just make some key points and the words and the meaning of what your learning

### 5/5 — Better than Duolingo

*2020-10-10, version 9.0*

I find that a remember much more from this app than duolingo. It is cheaper to subscribe to as well. It’s helpful because you actually get a vocalised explanation of the grammatical concepts and the ‘rules’ in Japanese!

Just needs more updates!

### 4/5 — More controls needed

*2020-09-26, version 9.0*

I like the app, but 10 sec per question in tests is frustrating when 4 sentences need to be read in kana. In “Settings” speed only controls the class narration speed, but not the time allowed per question. It is really needed. Also, would be appropriate to have an option to take the untimed tests. Vocabularies are not searchable. Until these feature are available, i’m not going to paid version.

### 5/5 — Love this

*2020-09-20, version 9.0*

This helps a lot I recommend it. I heard if this app from Paris a youtuber and ever scince I’ve been learning Japanese very well.

### 5/5 — I love it! Definitely the best app/training

*2020-09-06, version 9.0*

I have tried a few apps and this is by far the best! The layout in which they teach is great. They give you the tools to creat sentences and grow instead of just teaching you words!

### 5/5 — This app is great!

*2020-08-24, version 9.0*

I recently moved to Japan & before coming a started using this app. It’s been extremely helpful & I’m still using it today after living in Japan for 3 months. I highly recommend it!

### 5/5 — Actual learning!

*2020-08-20, version 9.0*

I’ve tried different apps to learn different and languages and I have to say that this has been the best one so far. It introduces grammar and vocabulary in a way that isn’t too fast paced and actually helps you understand how the language works. A lot of apps that shall not be named only introduce words separated from their context and hope you catch onto the grammar rules but this app doesn’t do that. Very good!

### 4/5 — Absolutely Great!

*2020-08-01, version 9.0*

This application explains everything you would need to know as a beginner while keeping you interested and feeling like you accomplish something every lesson. I don’t know where I’d be without it.

### 5/5 — Gef em

*2020-07-28, version 9.0*

Great app really recommend it but what happened to the flash card mode, that was like the most helpful part of the app.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Scam

*2021-02-27, version 9.0*

Spend like 6.99 for the whole thing in like 2010. Now, it requires a subscription? I already paid. Scam!

### 1/5 — Won’t complete lessons

*2021-01-03, version 9.0*

I’ve read and listened to most lessons but they won’t mark as completed, so I can’t take any of the quizzes. It keeps saying “you must complete all previous lessons and quizzes before unlocking this one.” I’m not going to pay for this if it won’t let me take the quizzes—not going to take that risk.

### 1/5 — Confused

*2020-10-12, version 9.0*

I purchased the lessons... now it’s locked... they went subscription based. I feel like someone stole my money

### 1/5 — This is why !!

*2019-11-10, version 8.0*

This was my review on the last app iStart French ,I purchased from the same app developer, Mirai languages
It's s an app that is well organized and it makes you want to learn, plus the play and pause help so much. Get it you won't regret!, But.... what happens a lot is that the developer makes an app, then once is done with it they and don’t get more people to buy it, they Stop doing updates .. so you end up wasting your money 💰 on an app that was great at one time and could’ve continued to be even better.. but 👎🏼 no .. Mirai Languages fails you update their ups for news iOS firmware.. I want Mirai Languages to something to reimburse me for the iStart French app that I purchased from them .. and this why I give one star ⭐️ to this app.. because I know they will not update the app for the next new iOS version.. I expect a reply from the developer!

### 1/5 — Disappointed by lack of communication with customer

*2017-10-23, version 8.0*

The app would easily get 5 stars but they stopped adding new chapters months ago and I tried several times to contact them to no avail. No response through email or Twitter.
I don't think there are any more chapters coming so no point in buying this app. Will be soon 1year since the last update. Don't buy.

Update: 2 years later and still no updates. Your recent iOS 11 update is a joke. You want to keep the money flowing for a product that hasn’t added any new content for 2 years. It is very apparent that you have plenty of money coming in from countless clueless subscribers who either never cancelled their subscription or are just unbelievably slow and your iOS 11 compatibility update confirms this.

If you are a keen learner, you have the available content completed in 2 weeks.

DO NOT BUY.

### 1/5 — Great, but no unsubscribe option??!?

*2017-08-17, version 7.4.2*

There is no option in the app to unsubscribe as the "manage subscription" button is a dead link and goes to the iTunes entry in the App Store.
My emails have not been responded to - yet they continue to charge me!
Aside feel that it's a great app.

### 1/5 — Be warned

*2016-10-31, version 7.4.2*

I paid for a subscription and they took my money without unlocking any lessons and features. Nor have they responded to my emails and Facebook messages. Dodgy app!! Be careful, be warned!

### 1/5 — Dead end subscriptions?

*2015-07-02, version 7.4.2*

This is a subscription based service, but there has been no new material since September 2014.
They do not reply to emails.
No longer publishing?
If so they should stop taking subscriptions

### 1/5 — This does not deserve to be bought

*2009-12-23, version 0*

It has 10 useless lessons for 6 bucks? 5 words in each lesson? Not worth it..

### 2/5 — Great app, but

*2021-07-25, version 9.0*

I really like the layout and other people’s reviews but however, the downside is, the person who had made this app Is not making new lessons since I think the other guy had said 2014? And the app owner replied more lessons are production and will be coming out soon. This is 2019! How much longer they will keep us waiting? What’s keeping Tom? If Tom the one who made this app? I had emailed and sent the email to them but no reply, I had saw they’ve read it but no reply. Weird. Also their dictionary app had been gone from the App Store. Where are you why you did not finish making lessons for us? How much longer I have to wait for. The Olympic Games will be next year in Japan, that’s what you told us and your goal is to have us be fluent. Please tell me exact date when you put more lessons and read my email. Thank you. I. Do like this app though PS. now it has been how meany years now and they said they are going to make new lessons and they are going to make you fluent. Scam. Scam because they didn’t kept there word. Hello Tom or who ever is the developers you had said that I will get fluent in Japanese but no new content. How long you will keep us waiting for? The Olympic Games are in few days. Did someone killed Tom? What happened to u Tom. This is 2021 now

### 5/5 — Great app

*2024-09-08, version 9.0*

It’s a nice beginning app for learning Japanese. I like that there are native speakers who assist with pronunciation in the app. It’s definitely worth the $.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2023-08-17, version 9.0*

A great app which covers the basics really well with clear translation and exercises to keep you coming back for more. I love it

With just a few lessons you can learn so much and the lesson are short enough to retain the information easily… keep practicing is all I’ll say… the more you learn the more you want to learn.

ありがとございます

### 5/5 — What happened to the flash cards?

*2023-05-31, version 9.0*

Great app! But, I came back after not using the app for a while, and can't find the flash cards anywhere. Am I just missing something that should be obvious, or did you get rid of them?

### 5/5 — Still an amazing app!

*2022-11-19, version 9.0*

It’s a great starting point for learning how to talk in Japanese and make sentences. The lessons are very easy to understand 🙌

### 5/5 — 👍

*2022-09-30, version 9.0*

It really does the job

### 5/5 — hii!

*2022-09-08, version 9.0*

i’ve used so many japanese learning apps and none of them come close to this one i’d love to see them make a app for french as well :)

### 5/5 — I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

*2022-07-13, version 9.0*

This app is literally the only app that helped me to understand and learn Japanese. Please make a Korean one as well if you will:)

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2021-12-09, version 9.0*

I listen to this app on the way to work everyday and it’s so easy to learn. It truly takes you step by step on the basics. Out of all the apps I was able to find this one I stuck with. I will be purchasing the whole package because of how amazing it is.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2021-03-23, version 9.0*

I really love this app it’s great for learning how to make sentences but I think this is a great SUPPORT app so I recommend having another app to go along with this one!

### 5/5 — Best way to learn Japanese

*2021-03-14, version 9.0*

I absolutely LOVE this app! I have 0 complaints. I don’t get ads as far as I can remember, and I am ACTUALLY learning something. Everything is pre-planned, and it is a working system. It shows you the category, example is time. It shows you how to say it, examples of how it is said, and shows you details you would or would not notice and explains it. I am learning at a fast rate, which may be hard to believe lol.
But seriously, it JUST TAKES DEDICATION!
