## What is Misophonia Trigger Tamer?

The app lets your brain experience a very positive stimulus (music or other activity) while occasionally hearing small bits of triggers. It can play a trigger so short and quiet that it does not even trigger you. As you increase the volume and/or length (duration) of the trigger, you will begin to feel something physically, but minimal or no emotions. This experience can reduce your response to specific misophonia triggers. As your response slowly declines, you can slowly increase the length and volume of the trigger to maintain a tiny miso-response. This is intended to be a very pleasant experience – a Happy Time as it says in the app. This app enables counterconditioning, which is a neurological process to reduce an acquired reflex (which drives your misophonia experience).

Load your favorite music from iTunes. You can load a trigger using iTunes or record and edit a trigger with the app. Your job is to relax (or dance) to the music, and allow your misophonic response to fade away.

This method has reduces the misophonic response in people with very specific triggers. For example, if you trigger to the sound of a family member chewing, but not strangers, this method may be effective. If you trigger to the chewing sounds of anyone (and anywhere), then this method is unlikely to produce improvement in the way you react to real-life trigger sounds.

Relaxing muscles before triggers has been reported to reduce the misophonic response. This app can also be used to practice the behavioral skill of relaxing (which is a behavior learned through practice).

Caution: Do not use the Trigger Tamer if it is unpleasant. Don't "be tough" and use a strong trigger. This app is for wimps. Take it easy, start with a very low volume, short trigger that creates an "eye blink" size reaction. Allow your response to change slowly. When the response decreases, you can then increase the length and volume of the trigger, always keeping your response very small and brief.

NEW FEATURE: The ability to download and use your music files and trigger recordings from other devices. With this version you can upload your trigger recordings via email and you can download audio files as email attachments. Once downloaded, you can copy them into the Trigger Tamer and use them.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2024-12-21*

Love the idea! It needs to be fixed so users can create a playlist.

**Developer response:** Version 3.21 added feature to download music files by email and copy them into the app to use in your Playlist. You must have an audio file to do this. You have to "own" the music, not simply borrow it on Spotify.

### 4/5 — Crashes

*2021-02-12*

Bug in changing volume or timing of trigger

### 1/5 — no support, no use

*2015-11-14*

doesn't operate as per the demo - only works if you have headphones. Contacted support a number of times with absolutely no response. no benefits from this very expensive App. Very disappointed.

### 3/5 — Crashes

*2015-05-08*

Please fix crashes.

### 5/5 — It actually works!! I'm finally misophonia-free after 35 years...

*2014-09-23*

Amazingly this app actually works. I've had misophonia for about 35 years and this is the *only* thing that has ever permanently eased it. (I've tried everything before - only noise-cancelling headphones playing white/pink noise helped, but that was only 'avoidance', not 'cure').

I found the app to be a very useful tool to help understand my own trigger response mechanism; with very short trigger times (~200 milliseconds) I was aware of my physical reaction phase but didn't suffer the subsequent emotional miso rage/crash. Any longer than that short duration initially triggered my full miso reaction but after only two training sessions I can listen to a sustained ('brutal' even) blast of my primary trigger sound with only a barely perceptible emotional reaction. Truly amazing!!

Once you understand the initial physical reaction you can retrain yourself to relax. I think this is key to proper use of the app. This works because no physical reaction = no subsequent emotional miso reaction a split-second after. With the help of this app this has been the first time I have fully understood what is going on. I never even knew before that I had *any* physical reaction at all - it seemed purely emotional. Knowledge is power I guess!!

Although it is still early days I feel that this app has already cured me of this devastating disease. For example I've noticed that out in public is now a pleasure rather than the living hell that it always has been previously...

Many many thanks to the developers for creating such an incredibly useful tool!!
