### 2/5 — No option to test drive without alerting emergency contacts

*2023-05-13*

I downloaded this app as a “just in case” thing to have on my phone. I had read reviews that some people had problems recording, so I tried recording a test 2-second video just to see what the controls were, and if it still records if you lock your phone (it doesn’t). I immediately got a panicked call from my emergency contact asking if I was okay. “Uh? Yeah? I’m just sitting here on my couch.” They told me that the ACLU texted them that I was involved in an incident. I had no clue, and there was no notification to me!

I really want to love what the ACLU is doing here, but so many things in this app (like the example above) indicate it received minimal or zero UX research.

### 3/5 — Missing feature? False advertising?

*2022-10-31*

The ad that got me to download the app suggested that the app would link with Siri so you could say "Hey Siri I've been pulled over" and the app would start recording. Apparently, that is not the case? Major bummer. >.<

### 3/5 — Info input issue

*2022-07-04*

I haven’t used the app as I just installed it. The app has an inadequate character limit for the personal e-mail field. Ridiculous. Pretty naive coding. In my case I needed 3 more characters to complete my email. This is a work email that has been in use for two decades. Pretty lame.

### 2/5 — iPhone 8 Can’t enter info

*2022-06-08*

Huge bugs!! Trying to enter my contact info but the text disappears behind the keyboard soon as i start typing. Basically renders the app useless for me. Please actually test and fix this. This app has such potential but completely unusable as is. The way the world is now We need this to tool!! Please!!!

### 3/5 — Meh

*2021-10-04*

I’m somewhat disappointed with the information section. It’s lacking in many respects and is frighteningly milquetoast regarding your first, fourth and fifth amendments. And most surprisingly not a single word on second amendment rights which is probably the one most likely to get you shot during a police encounter. You guys gotta update the info section. Maybe some info video links to learn how to interact with police. I mean, that’s the whole point of the app, right?

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2021-09-03*

Crashes immediately after opening app. Completely worthless

### 3/5 — Needs some fixes

*2021-06-13, version 5.9.1*

I commend the app for its usefulness but it seems the only way the video actually gets saved is if you fill out the incident report after your video stops. What if the cop snatches/brakes your phone? It seems unclear if the video actually gets saved or not.

### 1/5 — Not a good change

*2021-05-17, version 5.9.1*

I've had this application on ALL of my mobile devices for a couple of years. This dashboard was easy to use which fortunately I never had cause to use, although I would periodically use the test function.

The application upgrade changed everything! One could not recognize it as being the same application. It is basically worthless and I will be deleting it immediately. You broke one of the maxims, that being, IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT!

I've gone from pleased with a handy to have application in an emergency confrontation to dealing with a cumbersome piece of junk.

Would give a zero-star rating if it were possible.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work for recording video and reporting

*2021-05-03, version 5.9.1*

Don’t use this app just record video with the camera app and submit another way.

I recorded about 3-5 minutes of police interaction, then tried to submit a report, but after filling out the form and hitting Submit I got a useless error message telling me to “check all the fields” - I went back over the form like 5 times, made sure everything was filled out. Nothing was red or had a more specific error message. I tried writing a shorter description. The submit button was disabled, and I couldn’t figure out how to reenable it. I gave up and hit back. The video showed up in a list, but when I went to try again, only the first 6 seconds had actually been saved.

Luckily this incident didn’t turn violent, but not reliable enough to use again.

### 1/5 — App won’t start up

*2021-04-27, version 5.9.1*

I downloaded the app earlier today and I have been able to actually access it once, despite trying 4-5x. I even deleted it and re-downloaded it. After that it opened once and allowed me to choose my state and list my trusted friends, but has not started up again. Every time I open the app it stays on the opening screen of the raised fist. The link provided here to contact App Support is broken.

### 4/5 — Enable a widget from the Home Screen for quick access

*2021-04-21, version 5.9.1*

This app is something that should not have to exist, but should it be needed, the ability to access quickly from the iPhone’s Lock Screen would dramatically improve its timely usage, instead of having to search for it through pages and pages of apps on your phone.

### 3/5 — Am I doing something wrong when I make a test video MY phone number is alerted not my contacts

*2021-03-19, version 5.9.1*

So I input my information when it’s promoted, then I added my significant other’s phone and email. When I start a test video, I get a notification that my phone number has been alerted and my SO gets nothing.

Is this a bug? Or does he not get notified until I submit the video details?

### 1/5 — So disappointing the ACLU hasn’t fixed problems

*2020-11-28, version 5.9.0*

I just downloaded the app, and immediately had a problem where it would not let me choose my state. In today’s times this app could be so beneficial, but instead the well-funded ACLU still has not fixed the massive problems that seem to exist since the app was rolled out. Very disappointed with the ACLU. I downloaded the app, immediately ran into a problem, and then deleted the app. ACLU this is all you got???

### 4/5 — Inneffective assistance from council

*2020-06-24, version 4.0.2*

I have had multiple encounters with defective council being appointed to represent me and they are hard headed with sending emails. Is there anyway this could be updated to audio record phone conversations with attorneys when automatically when a call from attorneys lines comes in or goes out?? That would be nice. Another question is do we have the right to audio video record our personal court case encounters ? I’m probably gonna do it anyways but just asking before hand it would save on costs of buying my own transcripts and requesting video from unwilling and corrupt officials who make it their purpose to wreak havok in the lives off others! Otherwise this is an awesome app idea that I very much support

### 1/5 — Wow! This app is worthless!

*2018-05-14, version 3.1*

I tried to use this app to report an incident that happened in Sonora CA where the police there profiled a group of motorcycle riders who were minding their own business. You cannot use the app! It asks you to put in information but does not give you any way to enter the information. But you can’t go past the page to the next step until you enter something! You have no way on the page to enter any information!! If this was done by the ACLU then PLEASE fix this app!!!! We need this bad! Especially in today’s political climate of stepping on the freedoms of the marginalized people!!!
Help!!!!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Video recording/sharing is broken

*2025-02-08*

Claims to synchronize and share video with trusted contacts and your local ACLU, but my trusted contacts didn’t receive my test video even though the video fully synced 5 hours ago. You are better off with your phone’s native video recording/streaming, or wifi “security camera” apps on your phone that stream to a friend’s phone running a hotspot.

### 1/5 — This App is a Trap

*2024-05-08*

As many reviews point out the clearly ersatz presentation and erroneous functioning of this app which has not been updated in two years, it clearly does more harm than good. Why was it released and why is it being ignored? As the ACLU has recently suppressed internal unionization and advocated against national labor rights, I think you have to assume this software is a product of maliciousness rather than malfeasance.

### 1/5 — Failed Miserably

*2023-04-05*

When I downloaded this app I honestly thought that I would never have to use it. But, I did have to today and it failed BIG TIME! The app was slow in responding and the video freezes preserving only the audio in part. Huge chunks of the beginning of the video are missing. I do like the fact that it did notify my contacts right away. I intend to file charges against the officer but am worried that the video take here will be of any value. Going forward I will only use the built in camera without this app. One final point/question: why isn’t the video available in my downloads? ACLU: please pull this app. It is a huge disservice to the public. Also, the support link here goes to a non-existent website. Apple: ???

### 1/5 — App is only the camera

*2023-03-20*

Where are all the features shown in the tutorial My app only has the camera and report features?

### 1/5 — I hope no one relies on this…😳

*2023-01-16*

I’m a legal professional. When I saw this app, I was hoping it would be a reliable source of information. This is the United States; Equal rights should mean equal treatment. But I’m reading this completely mortified right now. I know the law like the back of my hand and don’t need any further insight. But if I relied on this stuff for “educational purposes” (as stated)…I’d be educating myself with information riddled with errors. You need to add a liability statement somewhere on here. Let me know if you need assistance with that - I’ll gladly do so for free.

### 1/5 — Can’t even “get started”

*2022-07-05*

I want to like this app and have it available for a road trip soon, but the Get Started button simply doesn’t respond.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-03-16*

Allow notifications, check agree to terms and privacy policy, press Get Started. Wait. Nothing happens.

Delete and reinstall app. Rinse and repeat. Again, nothing happens.

### 1/5 — Beware

*2022-01-07*

This app crashed when I needed it most. I really don’t think it should be on the App Store in its current state. I would’ve been able to document the attack on me if I had used my phone’s camera instead of this, but I feared my assailant would steal or break my phone. It is dangerous to have this app, as it is better to not have it than to use it and have it fail. Very disappointed.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2021-11-15*

I tried using app to record a police encounter and it wouldn’t launch so had to use my camera instead, this app just wasted my time.

### 1/5 — Not well designed for anything but video

*2021-10-15*

Why do I have to go through the video function to access the rights info articles? Why does the app indicate that it’s submitting a video when all I did was navigate to the articles? Why are the articles exclusively about California rights when I have a different state’s ACLU chapter selected in my profile? I can’t say whether the video functionality works as advertised but the rest of the app is pretty useless as designed.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — police misconduct

*2024-08-03*

I wish I would’ve remembered this when I was recording when the cops were raiding my house and I was recording them on video and the detective told me it was against the law to record any of the police undercover vehicles or any of them as they were taking all my guns out my house!
They struggle taking the phone from me and pursued to erase everything, even my cloud!!
I guess in Butte county they could do what they want🙈

### 5/5 — Good

*2023-06-13*

May not be perfect to police at something so stop complaining people better than nothing

### 5/5 — Update: works now!

*2021-04-28, version 5.9.1*

After upgrading to the new version of iOS, I am no longer having issues getting past the loading screen. Was able to navigate thru the app with ease.

### 5/5 — Best app

*2020-11-27, version 5.9.0*

Great idea! We need to get these corrupt pigs off the street and we do it by filming them just like they film us. I love how people deleted the app because if the “communist logo” lol what idiots. If they were knowledgeable they’d know the fist stands for all power to all people, but they’re idiots so it’s better they don’t have the app anyway 🤷🏽‍♂️

### 5/5 — Great Foundation; Needs Design Changes

*2017-03-13, version 2.57*

This app is absolutely all-encompassing and content-heavy. It has everything a person needs during an officer encounter and countless other scenarios, but it desperately needs an interface change and better design. Would love to see where this app goes with the right rebranding and look.

### 5/5 — Great way to capture your final moments

*2016-09-28, version 2.46*

I downloaded this app to protect myself and record police encounters for the protection of others but honestly get the feeling it is the last app I will ever use. At least in the event of a police encounter my family will have at least some record of my final moments. I guess that's the value of this app. The instant upload feature is great given that cops are now confiscating mobile devices in the aftermath of their killings of American citizens. Download the app, use it and remember folks in the 21st century we must protect ourselves because no one else will.

### 5/5 — DO NOT LEAVE A 1 STAR JUST BECAUSE ITS NOT IN ALL 50 STATES

*2015-08-05, version 1.33*

Guys, the developers obviously haven't had enough resources and time to set up an app for all 50 states. I think they know this already. Don't give the app 1 star because of that. The star rating should reflect how the app WORKS, not wether or not there are other apps to coincide with the currently WORKING app. If you believe in this app and wish to see it grow give it 5 stars not 1 that is how investors make their decisions on which apps they want to fund or not! *insert face palm emoji*

### 5/5 — All access USA

*2015-07-26, version 1.33*

Please develop an app that uses your location & sends videos to local papers & news stations - as well as cnn & the FBI that way if you're home or on vacation your app will work
I live in New Jersey & there is no app for my state. Please fix this ASAP

### 5/5 — Awesome ap

*2015-07-23, version 1.33*

Everybody should have this ap on their phones. Record everything that happens to you during a traffic stop or be a witness. Law enforcement has gone too far and it's time to get them in check.

### 5/5 — Shut the hell up this will save lives.

*2015-05-31, version 1.33*

If you think this shouldn't be an app bc "criminals" should take responsibility. You're calling a seven year old sleeping little girl a criminal. You're calling a pregnant woman who had nothing wrong a criminal. And all unarmed black people killed by police "criminals". When their lives have been lost for no reason at all. SHUT UP. You're probably white and do know anything about the injustice that happens everyday to black people by the police. Shut up.
