Feature for feature, there are very few iPad apps (if any) that can compete with this programs long list of abilities. So why is it not more popular? While it is daunting as it goes pretty deep, I think the real obstacle of this program is a beyond terrible interface design, and a very limited and dated sound palette. With that said, the ability to export as MIDI, as well as a half a dozen other arranger formats, this app has mojo for those that look beneath its creepy pink surface. ### 3/5 — I love this app, but... *2016-11-10, version 3.3.2* This app is a pretty great sequencer, but can be tricky to understand. I was looking for a way to modify the Cutoff Filter using the Control Change menu in the Piano Roll mode, but I couldn't find anything that pointed toward it. I'd appreciate it if the developers of this app were to make the Control Change a bit more clear as to what the options control. That should be the most basic thing that this does, but no!!!! When i start the app my phone turns hot and the battery drains 50% in about 15 or 20 minutes, this is crazy!!!! ### 4/5 — Feature requests *2015-07-17, version 3.2.4* I really love this app. I'm a blind muzition, and I've always loved Yamaha's products that they put out because they are simple to use. There menu layouts are awesome to understand. It works well with Apple's Voiceover screen-reader. I would like to see sample importing in a new release. Even if it is locked until you purchase it, that would be great! Garageband from Apple has it. Keep it up guys Can we also get a sound pack from the xs and new Xf? I like the sign leads and pads. Maybe that's in the RB pack or something) When I did a "mixdown" I had no clue that it started recording right then. I thought it was doing the mixdown quietly. I would like to request that when you press the create mixdown button that you optionly have the choice to start playback as well so theres not silence at the begining of the track. If this is fixed, I'll give it 5 stars. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Piups.... *2022-08-12, version 3.3.9* This app needs new sounds or at least to have AU in each track because its a toy with only 8 tracks and sounds from 50s. Now its doing hiccups and the sound disappears until saving and reopen the song again. Not worth a penny if no one cares about it and no one cares about this app ever. No one reads the reviews. Yamaha cant comprehend how powerful phones has became this days and how the storage went up to a terabits in a phone! The phones became better then the laptops now days with the exception that the phone is not as convenient as a laptop. And this app is still attached to sound cloud??? Not being able to load and extract a song in midi format??? Not being able to save in wave or mp3 right on my phone in files folder??? This app is so NOT user friendly at all and doesn't collaborate with audio-bus too... Don't recommend even for beginners! I literarily hate every yamaha keyboard i bought, they always have problems with sequencing and storage once you fill up the memory it will mix and change the transposition of tracks randomly in each song and exchange tracks within songs. I never got a yamaha keyboard with proper sequencer because they are advertised with sequencers but they have a list of numbers like you so oppose to use a calculator to sequence a track! How stupid is that?!?! The new montage and modx doesn't even have a sequencer - not the one people are looking for, but a phrase sequencer! A PHRASE SEQUENCER NOT NOTE SEQUENCER! THATS STUPIT YAMAHA!!! What app or device claiming to be a sequencer is not capable of playing midi files! In addition, when downloading a midi file onto an iPad, you can’t open it into this app! How does one get their money back due to false advertising? Also, can’t give a zero rating!!! Since originally writing this review, I tried Yamaha support and could not find support for apps of any kind - only for hardware products! Did I not see something buried in eye candy? Like a really cheap beginners keyboard from the 90s. Most phrases etc are locked behind IAPs. I really don't see who this is aimed at? If there are any redeeming thing about it it's that you can use the midi parts/phrases you make to run other apps or gear via the MIDI outs. But at 20 bucks plus 16 bucks to unlock the whole thing it's way overpriced (considering what else you can get on the AppStore for that money). Seriously Yamaha? Also I saw there is a new version on England (3.3.5) that supports iOS 12 and maybe correct the crash we are suffering with Dropbox compatibility So please Yamaha US give us that update also and also the other fixes and features Me and other fans and costumers are asking you since long time . If you are the kind of arranger musician or a composer that want everything to be easy and fast and mediocre Or maybe you are a good player but can’t create something original. This app can’t read or open midi files and neither can’t play auto accompaniment when connected with a midi keyboard 🎹 This is a very good application if you are a dedicated composer or arranger willing to create a masterpiece from scratch. I’m writing this review because I love this app and because there are many users that misunderstand the concept of this app and make bad reviews and had achieve Yamaha developers to no make the necessary updates on this wonderful app. This app contains the spirit of the “Yamaha Qy” line devices. And because of that it is not easy for any musician to drop in a midi file and just play it for edit it later. It is an app for “start” a project, mostly an original project and within this program you will find the tools to make your song to sound unique and detailed, if you want. Like I said it contains the spirit of the Qy line, but due to the touch screen, a clever Yamaha design and styles and phrases experience, and the powerful Apple 🍎 processors, users benefit with a Program with the latest and fastest music creation and accuracy Tools in difficult details: It can be used like a normal sequencer editor in the song mode and can be used for phrases or midi loops in the phrase mode In both modes you count with piano editor with useful and comprehensive, and in-deep tools and the wonderful and very useful loop remix editor, with unlimited new forms ideas 💡 for your difficult parts The voices are good and useful and can be modified easy with the sound editor with cutoff, release, portamento, etc. And effects like reverb, delay, chorus, etc. can be added and mixed on the effects screen. So please Fix the Dropbox compatibility that doesn't work anymore since iOS 10 Also on iOS 12 the phrases from purchased packs get lost and users have to often be restoring purchases, besides sometimes it happens also with user phrases, making difficult to work when you are offline, no connected to the internet. Many times users doesn't have or doesn't want to use the internet for concentrate better in the actual song. Another important update is related to the voice link when we want to use another app's sounds or patches, many times it is very difficult to make MMS to play with the sounds of that external app so please fix the bug and make it compatible again with Audiobus and Inter-app audio and also with Midiflow. Also the Midi clock is very buggy and it's difficult to get it to synchronize with external equipment and needs to be improved. And under project settings: The Tempo. Sometimes it is needed a change of the tempo in the middle of the song so please implement a way to change the tempo, maybe in the piano editor in the first track used mostly for drums. Also under project settings : Time signature it has 4/4 and 3/4 only. It would be good to have some more options please. I think with these functionalities finished, the program would be complete and any other feature added will be just an extra, because the program it is perfect in its own way. So don't forget to sale more phrases, presets and sounds, I'm sure there are many users willing to buy them. The remix feature helps take your melody and quickly come up with different variations. There are so many little tools in the this app, once you start working through it, that really make writing music much easier. The sounds are ok, but you can use IAA or MIDI to control other sound generators or external hardware. All in all I am finding more and more uses for it. I only wish they would allow you to pick the MIDI channels for each track instead of just going from 1 to 8 or add 8 more tracks. ### 5/5 — I wish I had bought this sooner *2013-07-09, version 2.0.1* This has quickly become one of my new favorites. It has a interface reminiscent of Ableton, especially great for live improvisation. The ability to map any kit on to any pattern and then remix the loops to perfection is just absolutely wonderful when feeling creative but lazy (I'm sure most if not all musicians can relate to this). And if your work ethic happens to be strong, you can edit and create patterns on the piano roll (not my favorite way to sequence beats but I am not really too concerned with this, I have other apps that I use for that anyway). I would of course like the ability to a paste my own loops in but this is just not that kind of app, but if Yamaha ever makes a similarly styled app where you could work with your own samples I would not hesitate one second to get it. Especially with Yamaha's superior loop remix functionality. I have an old SU-200 sampler and the loop remix plus ribbon control makes it a relevant piece of my performance kit to this day. In most cases you can't go wrong with Yamaha (there is one app I hated but won't mention it's name due to my tremendous satisfaction with this one). Anyway...
