Moby Chip is a four track, easy to use, chiptune, music sequencer. It was designed to recreate that old-school 8-bit video game sound. Each track is monophonic and generates sound from user definable, 4-bit 32 sample wavetables, or random pitched noise for drums and sound effects. The wavetable oscillators are bandlimited, using a proprietary algorithm, calculated in real time, and modeled somewhat after the original GameBoy’s wavetable channel.

Moby Chip was design with professionals in mind. It’s great for creating chiptune songs or sound effects. It has sample based timing with accurate tempos. Export options include full song or phrase with selectable tracks and four file formats: wav, AAC/m4a, caf, ringtone/m4r. Exported audio files are ready to use without editing. Drop them into your favorite App such as Ableton Live, Apple Logic Pro X, or use them in a video game. These files can be accessed outside the Moby Chip App in the Apple Files App or accessed through iTunes File Sharing or in the Finder (MacOS 10.15 and newer).

Moby Chip can be played live. Plunk out a tune on the onscreen keyboard with accompanying music provided by the Notes Grid (main screen) or the Song Editor. And like the music trackers of old, each note of each track can be individually edited. The instrument, octave, volume, glide (portamento), pan (including old-school delay stereo effect), arpeggiated chords, and trill effects, can all be adjusted per note. And one of my favorites, the Notes Grid supports triplets.

You can find in-depth information in the included manual. But don’t let that keep you from jumping in and trying it out. Also, eight song examples are included in the app to learn from. Have a whale of a time!

### 4/5 — Whale of an app, indeed!

*2023-01-21*

I’ve been scouring for chiptune-making applications lately, and arguably the chief among them for iOS is Moby Chip. The interface is appealing, appropriate, and very easy to learn, sand the sounds are as authentic as anything I’ve heard so far.

I would give it five stars but for the fact that it has no Audiobus/AUM/AuV3 support. Otherwise it would be perfect. I can certainly export to WAV and patch it from AudioShare through effects, but it would be so much better to do it in real-time. Maybe, with any luck, a future update will give me cause to bump it up one star more.

### 5/5 — Worth it.

*2022-07-21*

This is the better end of the stick. In other words, It’s absolutely amazing. I have had a lot of interest in remaking 8-bit music, so I scraped together 8 dollars and bought this. And I have to say: AN APP LIKE THIS IS WORTH ITS PRICE. So if you’re into making chip tune music buy this it’s perfect and worth the price.

### 5/5 — Best chip app

*2021-06-03*

I was caught off guard by this one and bought it instantly. iOS has a serious lack of quality chip tune tools and Moby Chip is a HUGE step in the right direction for chip tune enthusiasts and makers.

Everything is intuitive, and if you need, the manual is easily accessible right up top. My only request would be to have the option of playing it with a MIDI keyboard, as I could see myself using this as part of my live electronic/chip/ambient sets. Oh! And maybe to be able to load it as an AUV into something like Cubasis or AUM.

But even if these never happen it doesn’t change the fact that this is a great sounding, great looking, and great quality app. I hope Dan keeps this one fresh, maybe even puts out some stand alone chip synths/drum machines...?

Congratulations!!!!!! I’ll be telling everyone so know about this.

**Developer response:** Glad you like it!

No plans for adding MIDI keyboard or AUv3 functionality to Moby Chip at this time.

To better address these features, I’m in the planning phase for a desktop synth plugin using the Moby Chip sound engine (AU, VST3, etc.).

### 5/5 — A masterpiece of its kind

The complete package: sexy, smart, funny, and an excellent cook.
