### 3/5 — Oversubscribed

*2026-05-07, version 2026.4.5*

Hard to get appointments at popular locations — even just for technicians

### 1/5 — Terrible Sign Up Experience with App

*2025-12-14, version 2025.12.4*

I've been trying to sign up through the app. Every single time it would give me an error code when it's time to choose and pay for the membership. It would give me an error but they've charged me EVERY SINGLE TIME. I'm trying to dispute it but I can't even chat with anyone on the app.

I tried fixing the membership details but every single time I press the option, the app CRASHES.

This app is so faulty. I wanted to be a new client but this is giving lots of red flags.

### 1/5 — Very frustrating app. Buggy.

*2025-11-13, version 2025.11.27*

It’s been a year and I have tried to contact them multiple times about how buggy their app is. Sometimes a chat loads to a blank screen and you have to try many times. Same with the media uploaded into chat. When you clip it’s just a blank screen and you have to try again and again. It’s very frustrating when there’s an emergency and you need the nurse to see photos and videos right away.

### 1/5 — Actively blocks you from scheduling doctors appointments

*2025-10-05, version 2025.9.11*

You pay a couple hundred dollars a year per pet so you can easily see a doctor when needed - yet the app is designed to force you to book technicians appointments for basic stuff like vaccines. The service has gone significantly downhill over time.

### 1/5 — Actors rather than vets

*2025-09-18, version 2025.9.6*

They are trained to acting like good vets but they don’t care about your pets. They didn’t response any messages or called for after my cat surgery

### 1/5 — Terrible experience

*2025-08-29*

I signed up hoping for gentle, attentive care for my anxious senior dog, but the experience was deeply disappointing. We waited 15+ minutes past our appointment while my sedated dog grew more anxious. The vet was cold and brief, with the tech handling most of the explanations. My dog was then taken to the back for a blood draw where he screamed nonstop only for me to be told they couldn’t collect enough for the full panel or a urine sample. We now have to return for another visit and repeat the trauma. To top it off, the exam room had visible blood on the floor from a previous patient. The only bright spot was the kind vet tech. But this is not the “5-star” no-fear care I was promised.

### 1/5 — Awful service

*2025-08-16, version 2025.8.21*

They will do everything possible to upsell you, and they will never get you a prescription when you need it over the weekend. Entirely pointless subscription and service.

### 1/5 — Mixed opinions and bad communication

*2025-05-13*

Brought my cat in to check his breathing since he was making weird sounds. He got X-rays and was diagnosed with pneumonia even though they said it was asthma at first. He took antibiotics but there was no change in the sound of his breathing or grunts. The doctor also didn't mention that he had a fever the first time and we only found out when the second one told us that it was gone when he came back. The doctors seemed very rushed. I asked about his breathing sounds not getting better multiple times in the app but like many others have stated the online doctors do not consult with your original doctor so their responses weren't helpful nor agreed with each other. I also sent videos of the sounds to the online providers and they didn't seem to listen to them at all?? I've shelled out thousands of dollars for X-rays and a diagnoses that I'm not sure was even correct because his condition has not changed and I'm unable to even send messages to the online providers anymore because the chat fails to load. Very disappointed and still worried for my cat overall.

**Developer response:** Thank you for taking the time to share this. We’re really sorry to hear that your cat is still experiencing symptoms, and we understand how upsetting and frustrating this must be, especially after putting so much trust and effort into his care.

Your concerns about communication, continuity between doctors, and lack of follow-up are valid, and not the experience we want anyone to have. We’d like to look into what happened here and do what we can to support you and your cat.

### 1/5 — Software company pretending to be a veterinary practice

*2025-04-14, version 2025.4.4*

Modern Animal is a software company NOT a veterinary provider. This distinction is the real source of the problems. They are VC backed, high-growth startup interested in developing a veterinary app. They are less interested in a continuity of service or providing veterinary care for your pet. Those are secondary. When I complained, they called to speak with me and most of the conversation was about "providing feedback to their developers". This should be a red-flag to anyone looking to receive care for a pet. You cannot reach anyone at a facility as everything is driven through the app which at first seemed great. I was able to schedule an appointment and see test results. However, if you need to call a vet back, schedule a specialist, receive a prescription, you will be sent through the void that is the app. Prescriptions are not sent by your vet. They go through some secondary aspect of the company who then take 48 hours to review and send (if they send it at all - Petsmart was never able to get a response). Can you imagine needing a life-saving prescription and being stuck in this system? No one who works there can do anything about it because the entire organization has to work through the software.
If you have a young, healthy pet, this is probably not the worst option. If you have any complicated medical problems, however, this place will be a huge source of stress, money, and time.
I wish I had not paid for their yearly membership as I left as fast I came.
Side note: their pricing is on the extremely high-end, so 10% off doesn't really do much.
Go to a real vet. This is a software company

### 1/5 — TERRIBLE AND CRUEL

*2025-03-09*

Honestly, I am beyond frustrated. I spent $1700 to thoroughly exam my dog over a UTI to make sure the reasons he was getting them. I could have just paid for a simple urine test, but they encouraged me to spend over $1k more for imaging to make sure he didn’t have a kidney issue. Which he did not. They took a week to give medication waiting for urine results, meanwhile his UTI for worse and I had to witness him in pain, and not go to work as he needed to be let out every hour. He is an 11 yr old dog, with IVDD causing frequent UTI’s (approx every two months). Modern animal had provided a refill which I did not get because he was doing better and their office was 30 mins away and I’ve been working overtime to try and pay off the last bill. He as of 24 hrs has been having the same symptoms for the UTI (two months after the last) so I contacted the pharmacy for a refill. They denied it. I contacted support and the pharmacy and they want me to go in for another visit for an exam and urine test. Which mind you, takes a week to get back before they prescribe medicine. Leaving my dog in pain and urine all over my house. This exam they want to do will total over $600 for another vet visit when all I needed was the refill (they already promised) for $7.20. THIS IS ROBBERY!!! I AM STILL PAYING FOR MY LAST BILL!! YOU ARE CAUSING PETS TO UNNECESSARILY SUFFER FOR YOUR FINANCIAL GAIN!!! How can you pretend you care for animals when this is how you treat them??? Bankrupting their owners on tests so we know what’s going on, under the guise future appointments would be more affordable and streamlined with said issue. Only to turn around, retract a refill, deny a prescription, leave an animal in pain and put us both through expensive and unnecessary diagnostics THAT WE ALREADY COMPLETED AND PAID FOR!!!! DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Unless you feel like lighting your money on fire and letting your pets suffer in pain.

### 2/5 — Great concept, dismal execution

*2025-01-05*

While the quality of care I received at one of the clinics was excellent, from the lovely vet tech/receptionist (she herself, Sarah, deserves 6 stars) to the doctor who treated my German shephard, the fatal flaw in this type of app-based service is the lack of accessibility to speak directly with the vet who treated my dog’s laceration and who subsequently diagnosed him with cancer and a heart murmur.

Even though they market themselves with an elevated, personal approach to their membership program, there is not an option to directly speak with the vet who makes diagnoses or performs treatments. Because it is ONLY app-based (you can’t even schedule appointments on a web browser), there is no way to connect with your vet and WILL BE bounced around from vet tech to vet tech who will consult with a “care team” on duty then, who will almost always have never seen your pet’s medical records beforehand.

Their $200 membership is essentially like a gym membership, sure all simple exams are free (but not any other services—they charge $45 for nail clipping even—hilarious! PetSmart charges $20). My local vet is much cheaper even with the $80 non-member exam fee for a regular check up (He charges $65). The tumor excision surgery my dog needs was quoted by MA at $3850, compared to the $1,800-2,200 my vet quoted me on, which even included additional services/treatments not considered by MA.

**Developer response:** Hi Edward,

Thank you for your feedback and we are happy to hear that your experience in person was excellent. We are sorry to hear about your experience with our virtual care team. We want to assure you that every one of our virtual care team members has records available as well as a direct line of communication to the doctor on duty.

Please feel free to reach out at hello@modernanimal.com so that we can connect further!

### 1/5 — I can’t recommend choosing another Vet enough

*2024-12-24*

I think modern animal is an absolute rip off. Maybe it’s just the location I am in, as I live in the Bay Area in California. It’s insane to me how much I’ve spent on them for me to get absolutely nowhere every time. They have offered solutions that would have killed my dog as well. I have spent a minimum of $700 every visit and I pay for their yearly service. Anytime I’ve needed anything done, it costed $700 for blood work and other tests when my dog had a problem. They say he’s fine when he clearly isn’t then recommend something else that doesn’t resolve the issue at hand, which I’ve obliged every time except for the few times they have given me really concerning recommendations. For example, my dog had worms in his stool, I showed them a picture, gave them a sample with the worms in it, they told me he doesn’t have worms and that he has a yeast infection in his ear. Or my dog had be consuming massive amounts of water everyday then urinating in the house, minimum $700 and they got no where then recommended putting my 12 yr old dog under so they can remove all of his broken molars. Will my dog wake back up from anesthesia? What kind of life will he live after having his molars removed? Overall, I am so disappointed and dissatisfied with modern animal. I started going to just a local vet and built a rapport with them. It’s honestly way better.

**Developer response:** Hi Dylan,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We understand that veterinary care can feel costly, but currently we feel that our prices are aligned with the level of care that we provide. That being said, your dog’s health and safety are incredibly important to us, and we want to make things right. If you are open to it, please feel free to contact us at hello@modernanimal.com to connect further.

### 4/5 — Description of calendar invite has wrong time

*2024-12-17, version 2024.12.14*

The description of the calendar invites created from the app have the wrong time. I think it is in pacific standard time instead of the time of the appointment locally.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — cannot book

*2026-08-16, version 2026.8.3*

I’ve been trying to enter my information to book an appointment, but the app keeps looping me back to “Find a nearby location,” and then it eventually shows a blank page. I guess I’ll have to call instead. Unfortunately, the app isn’t very functional or user friendly.

### 1/5 — Terrible app Terrible everything

*2026-07-31, version 2026.7.17*

I’m disappointed. I want my membership fee back

### 1/5 — Chat support is not patient care

*2026-07-15, version 2026.7.7*

Chat support is not good patient care. I’ve tried chatting a few times but other than a few simple questions it’s no replacement for personal care. I chatted with a Missy and waited very long for responses that weren’t answers to my requests. No help at all

### 1/5 — Terrible UX

*2026-06-15*

If you start booking an appt on the website, it directs you to download this app and you have to start over from the beginning. Within the app, there’s a loop where you have to re-enter info multiple times before proceeding. The homepage is also blank, and you have to sign out and sign back in before you can book an appt. When you provide a detailed reason on the visit, some AI assessment decides you need to go to an emergency clinic (which is not the case) and you have to remove context that would probably be helpful for the doctor/staff to read. Terrible app, and if the company is experiencing a drop in appointments over time, it’s probably one of the main reasons why.

### 1/5 — App Constantly Fails

*2026-06-10, version 2026.5.12*

I love my West Hollywood location but this app is atrocious. My cat passed over a year ago and now when I try to book an appointment for my other cat it will only let me book in my deceased cat’s name. When I try to go to the home page it is a blank white screen. When I try to continue booking through my deceased cat’s name (as that is the only option the app gives me) and I choose a yearly plan to continue with, the app force quits. There is literally no way to me to book through the app. Get this fixed!!

### 1/5 — Can’t get notifications

*2026-06-09, version 2026.5.12*

Just saw someone else’s review and I’m going to reiterate that I can’t get any notifications. I’ve checked countless times that the notification settings are turned on in the app as well as through my phone settings and I’m still not able to get any. Email notifications are also turned on and I don’t get those either. I’ve deleted and redownloaded the app 3 times now and it also does nothing. Incredibly upsetting when we’re dealing with our pets’ time sensitive information. Please fix this!

### 1/5 — Notifications

*2026-06-07*

I have all notifications turned on through the app, through my phone and have double checked on several occasions to ensure that push notifications are active and none of the chat messages push through. Despite having time-sensitive chats I get zero alerts and have to actively open the app in order to know if I have been contacted. This appears to be a huge bug and has caused me significant issues in communicating with my veterinarian team unless I am actively glued to my phone with the app open at all times. I am unsure why this happens but I have had this issue since I downloaded the app several months ago. I have no other issues like this with any other app on my phone. Please look into this as time-sensitive alerts can be critical when it comes to the care of pets.

### 1/5 — easy to sign up. impossible to cancel

*2026-06-02, version 2026.5.12*

they’ll gladly take your money but when it comes time to cancel they violate california laws and don’t have an easy option to cancel

### 1/5 — Sign In and Sign Up Does not work

*2026-06-02, version 2026.5.12*

Sign In -> input number -> click next. Nothing happens.

Sign Up -> put in details -> 0 appointments found and can’t change location.

Your app is messed up and I can’t even log into my existing account.

### 1/5 — Appl doesn’t finish booking after taking Payment

*2026-05-12, version 2026.4.5*

I couldn’t sign in or out to start over until next day.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Referral Code

### 5/5 — So easy

*2026-06-25, version 2026.6.9*

Love using this app

*2026-05-19, version 2026.5.6*

Works seamlessly w your calendar and super easy to use, all your pets info is one click away, overall very user friendly

### 5/5 — Very helpful

*2026-04-21, version 2026.4.5*

App works great. They were very kind and helpful in person. Would recommend this vet

### 5/5 — For the True Pet Parents

*2025-07-25*

The Modern Animal app is so incredibly intuitive and saves so much time! I love the ability to book my dog’s appointment at any time and view a full calendar for days and times that work with my irregular schedule.

I have used the telemedicine through the app more times than I care to admit. It gives me so much peace of mind!

The care in clinic is the best my pet and I have ever experienced and we will be Modern Animal members for life!

### 5/5 — Very easy to use

*2025-06-15, version 2025.6.16*

This app works beautifully. I was able to see everything I needed to and choose a good time for myself.

### 5/5 — Pleasantly surprised!

*2025-03-05, version 2025.2.9*

I was skeptical. Our old vet clinic was just that…old and outdated. My dog couldn’t return due to receiving fleas from that clinic…not to mention horrible skin infection.
The M. Vet diagnosed everything very well and my poor dog was in recovery with the first few days. The costs were comparable to the d clinic.

### 5/5 — Modern

*2024-06-12, version 2024.5.9*

I am enjoying the app on my phone very much. How wonderfully user friendly with clear and simple navigations.

### 5/5 — OMG I’m so impressed + thankful

*2024-05-16*

We just recently rescued a Great Dane puppy and our first vet experience at another clinic was awful- long wait times, zero transparency, zero customer service, and the vet seemed eager to get the appointment over after being with me for 5 minutes. When I asked questions the vet and the nurse seemed annoyed. I feared all of Los Angeles vets would be an expensive sub par experience with Vets just interested in taking all your money and little desire in providing a positive experience for you and your pet. Then a friend told me about Modern Animal and said they LOVED it so I decided to give it a try. So far, the app is hugely convenient and informative and so refreshing to know I can get answers to all my concerns in the blink of an eye! I feel SO supported! We easily scheduled our first visit through the app with ease and lots of availability. Although we haven’t experienced the in person vet or office yet, I can already feel we are in great hands just from the chat interactions. Modern animal clearly has a dedication to customer service for both the owner and the pet. The services in the app alone are worth the all access membership in my opinion. So happy I found this and I’m looking forward to our in person visit now :) thank you modern animal for changing the game and offering a new loving + intelligent way to provide care for our animals!

### 5/5 — EDIT: thank you for fixing bugs!

*2024-03-29*

Thank you to the devs for reading reviews and fixing the bugs!! :) I have updated my review to 5 stars.

Previous Review:

As people have previously mentioned, the red notification badges being messed up on the app drive me insane, and are quite a problem when this is an app used for healthcare for our pets and is needed in urgent situations. Modern Animal itself is great and I have nothing but good things to say about them, but the developer for the app needs to seriously take a look into this issue because it’s been happening to my app for months and months. I’ve tried logging out, deleting and reinstalling the app, restarting my phone inbetween, manually checking every message in my inbox to get rid of the badge, etc. and it’s still there. Please fix this, as other app users have mentioned months and months before!

**Developer response:** Hi mewkitsu,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you have been having with the notification badges. Our engineering team believes they have identified the problem and have been working diligently to fix this. We are planning on releasing an app update very soon that will show the correct number of notifications that you have from the app.

As someone who tries to always keep all my notifications at zero, I hear you on how frustrating this has been, and I appreciate the feedback and your patience as we work to fix this!

Best,
Micah
Quality Engineering Manager
