They’re also adding some experimental new features like automatic silence detection which is helpful for some game music formats that don’t contain song length data. This is easily the best vgm player in the app store and worth a few bucks. **Original review below** Overall probably the best mod/vgm player on the app store. It plays custom formats (amiga, arcade, genesis, etc) very accurately and supports a huge number of formats. The ability to download your favorite music from inside the app is fantastic. I also really like that you can easily view information stored in the custom formats, for example HVSC notes. But now for the bad news… Unfortunately, there are two pretty big issues: 1) trying to download from some integrated menus like vgmrips causes an instant app crash 100% of the time, and it’s been this way for months, which means I’m stuck with whatever songs I’ve already downloaded before this bug was introduced. Being unable to download new music on a music app seems like it should be a high priority to fix. 2) navigating through your music library and playlists is really confusing, it’s easy to get lost and hard to find the music you want sometimes. I’m not a user interface designer so I have no suggestions on how to fix it, I just know that it’s not very intuitive. Our choices for custom format game music playback on mobile devices is incredibly limited, and so this is probably your best option. Just know beforehand that there are going to be some rather large annoyances while using it. ### 3/5 — Good app! Just keeps on wasting my battery. *2024-08-24, version 3.10* When I switched from PureModPlay to Modizer, it felt like a whole new world; oscilloscope views, pattern views, many visualizers, lots of files supported, etc… I’d give the app 5 stars, if it weren’t for the battery problem. Every night I put my phone down, I would sleep, and then this app would get stuck on a song. I don’t know why this is happening but now, I have to deduct 2 stars. Maybe if this is fixed, I will give it 5 stars. ### 5/5 — Plays basically every retro game and computer music *2024-08-14, version 3.10* This app can play almost every obscure format I’ve thrown at it, even old “custom” Amiga sound files using UADE. Also, thanks a lot for bringing the “List all ordered by path” mode back in the library, I missed this being the default behaviour. ### 4/5 — Search problem *2024-07-18* Search function doesn’t appear to be working the way it once did. I used to be able to search for, say, “protracker” on Modland to specify I wanted songs from that folder followed by further criteria like song name / artist and get results but now I get nothing. I’m not sure what’s changed but I hope it’s temporary as this is much less flexible. **Developer response:** Hi, I've introduced regexp to have more possibilities in the search patterns. I think if you just replace ' ' (space) with '*' (asterisk) it should work, like in 'protracker*samurai' instead of 'protracker samurai'. Pretty sure I used to run it on my iPhone 3GS if not my iPod Touch? And I keep seeing regular updates when I already have no complaints. Currently it even links you into some leading archives of music for it, though it can be hard to get through the integrations at times. Still, I can't recommend it enough! This app and developer truly owe me nothing at this point. I want to see the oscilloscope views fully without the waves clipping from being too loud. Also, it does not work with endless NSFes because it will fade out on them. Can there be an option to switch it to endless where it doesn’t fade out? (Edit: the new update that was supposed to add infinite playback to NSFplay, but I cannot find the option to do so.) (Edit 2 for 6/4/2024, for infinite loop of NSFe files, I expect it to loop like a normal NSF file but it recognizes the loop point and loops from there, and the looping becomes unsatisfying. Can that be fixed?) ### 5/5 — Something's is wonky with the favorites list😅🙏 *2024-05-23, version 3.9* When playing songs in favorites, it eventually gets 'stuck' and decides to start playing songs from an entire album, songs not in the favorites. It'll be cycling thru all my songs, then say when a song I selected as a favorite from Super Mario Bros for SNES comes on, it'll begin to play the entire Super Mario Bros soundtrack, even though I didn't select the rest of the songs. REALLY APPRECIATE THAT THIS APP IS STILL BEING TAKEN CARE OF! THANK YOU!!😅🙏♾ ### 4/5 — Viewing playlist crashes app *2024-05-06, version 3.6* Not sure if reinstalling the app fixes this. One thing though, my favorites playlist, when playing tracks it doesn't play thru all of them. It only plays the songs of the album of that song that's currently playing, even if you didn't have the rest of the album in your favorites. It won't go to the next track in the favorite playlist. Plays just about everything under the sun, including formats you didn’t even know existed. However, the recent update bugged FLAC playback. Most of my library consists of FLAC, and the JoshW SegaCD Archive also mostly consists of FLAC. Regarding oscilloscope views I will check if it can be re-calibrated. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Latest update has rendered Modizer useless *2026-02-07, version 4.2* The most recent update has caused most of the UI to disappear so I no longer have access to online content like Modland or HVSC, can’t change any settings and can only play locally stored files. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling several times to no avail. So this went from a 5 star app to 0 stars as it is essentially bricked, with no way to restore anything. ### 1/5 — Do *not* update. *2024-02-20, version 3.4* Have been using this for ages and love it. However, the latest update (v3.4) has effectively crippled it. SID tracks won’t reliably play, favourites don’t work, sound and tempo of SID tracks has completely changed, tracks skip randomly. 🙁 ### 1/5 — Only plays first track from compressed vgm album *2021-09-08, version 3.1* The player used to be great, but now only plays the first track in a compressed vgm directory. ### 1/5 — Visualizer Doesn’t work *2018-08-05, version v2.9.1* Don’t know why they show a visualizer in all the screenshots when this doesn’t have one. I totally would have paid big bucks cause it's sooooooo awesomely good. Some of the playback engines aren't totally spot on, but that's not really modizer's fault. Besides - what do you expect from an app that tries to emulate all of those formats! Being able to FTP files in is so useful... I wish other apps used it. I have every Genesis, every NES soundtrack on here + a slew of great demoscene stuff. So Good... So Good. Just know beforehand that there are going to be some rather large annoyances while using it. ### 2/5 — Great feature set, but too buggy and crash-prone *2022-03-16, version 3.1* I want to like this app so much, because it has the widest music format support on iOS, but unfortunately the app is riddled with too many crashes and bugs; for instance, the app will crash back to the home screen every so often when managing files, and attempting to rename a downloaded file sometimes results in a perplexing "no access to Inbox" error. ### 2/5 — I love/hate this app. *2021-06-01, version 3.0* Modizer has some awesome things about it and some terrible things about it. The awesome is that it plays just about all of the modern file formats used for legacy game music. You can literally have thousands of game soundtracks from platforms like NES, Genesis, and arcade, to less popular stuff like Atari ST, PC-88, and MSX. The interface for adding new OSTs is intuitive, the tracks are usually bit accurate, and they take up barely any room at all. But it’s not all roses. The playlist functionality is unusable, and the random track feature only plays the first tracks out of any given pack. By far the most frustrating issue, however, is the fact that the app periodically needs to “update the database”. I don’t know what is in this database, but it takes FOREVER to update. Case in point, today I tried to do it, and gave up after about 20 minutes. You have to click update, and leave your phone alone, because if you put the app in the background, it will reset and you’ll have to start over the next time you try to use the app. This basically forces you to choose between not using your phone or not using the app, every few weeks or month or however often it gets an updated database. As much as I love the pros of this app, I don’t love it enough to put up with such nonsense. ### 2/5 — Almost the best *2020-07-19, version 2.9.3* The player caps at 2:30 and doesn’t display the instruments.
