فرهنگ معين، يکي از فرهنگ‌هاي مهم لغات فارسي است كه حدود 5 دهه پيش شكل گرفته است
دکتر محمد معين نويسنده اين فرهنگ، معتقد است که هيچ فرهنگ کاملي کار يک تن نبايد باشد و نمي‌تواند باشد. معين در فرهنگ خود از۳۰۰ هزار فيش که با همکاري گروهي از دوستان فاضل و بالغ بر۴۰۰ دانشجو در طول۲۰ سال فراهم شده، استفاده کرده‌ است
به عنوان يک محقق، معين فردي واقع بين و امانتدار بود، هميشه جانب اعتدال را رعايت و از غرض ورزي به شدت دوري مي‌کرد. اين خصيصه وي باعث شد که بسياري از بزرگان ادب ايران همچون علامه دهخدا و نيما يوشيج ادامه جمع آوري، تدوين و چاپ آثار خود را به دست وي بسپرند
‌ابعاد زندگاني‌ دکتر معين‌ راست‌ و روشن‌ است و اين محقق خصوصيات بسيار درخشاني دارد که از ميان آنها مي توان به وقار و صلابت، طنين‌ خوش‌صوت، عطوفت، متن شناسي در عين چيره‌دستي و گرامرشناسي در حد نمونه اشاره کرد
دکتر معين با فراهم کردن مجموعه شش جلدي فرهنگ فارسي خدمتي بس بزرگ به جامعه ادبي انجام داد، ضمن اين‌که فرهنگ معين با يک روش ابتکاري و بهره‌گيري از فرهنگ‌هاي مختلف و روش‌هاي گوناگون تدارک ديده شد
دکتر معين اين ميهن دوست و عاشق فرهنگ و ادب ايران در تير ماه سال 1350 درگذشت، و لي گنجينه‌اي از آثار گرانبها به فرهنگ و ادبيات ايراني، تقديم كرد
