## What is Monash FODMAP Diet?

Researchers at Monash University have developed the low FODMAP diet and a corresponding app to assist in the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Monash University FODMAP diet works by swapping foods high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), with low FODMAP alternatives. Around 75% of people with IBS experience symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.

The app comes directly from the research team at Monash and includes the following:

- General information about the FODMAP diet and IBS.
- Easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the app and the 3-Step FODMAP diet.
- A Food Guide detailing the FODMAP content for hundreds of foods using a simple 'traffic light system'.
- A list of branded products that have been certified by Monash as low FODMAP.
- A collection of over 70 nutritious, low FODMAP recipes.
- Functions that allow you to create your own shopping list and add notes to individual foods
- A Diary that enables you to record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels. The Diary will also guide you through step 2 of the diet - FODMAP reintroduction.
- The ability to adjust units of measurement (metric or imperial) and activate colour blindness assistance.

### 1/5 — Waste of $. Refund please.

*2026-08-16, version 4.3.2*

I wish they’d offer a free trial first so I could see that this is not a terribly user friendly app. Common words don’t come up by typing a few letters and you have to type the entire thing or it’s showing you random items unrelated to what you’re searching. I’d love a refund. I won’t be using this.

### 3/5 — Still in development

*2026-08-11, version 4.3.2*

The app is just the extended version of the web site with searchable feature on a limited tested food. The challenge is still thousand of other products out there that i will have to second guess or through trial and error. Pricing is not great based on provided contents. The gluten free app was cheaper with better functionality and community base evaluation on eating out choices. The university staff needs to hurry up with the upgrade; unless this is only an attempt to recover the research costs. Not a problem there, but i think i would have to find the not so official tool to manage my condition.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2026-08-11, version 4.3.2*

It’s better to just get a diary booklet and fill it out yourself. This does not help me one bit.

### 1/5 — Payment

*2026-08-10, version 4.3.2*

Charged me without my consent. Did not even put my credit card info in but it still charged me $8.49. Maybe it was in a germs and conditions but when I checked the app to cancel that I could not find a subscription area. Not even that helpful with recipes either.

### 2/5 — Screen cut off

*2026-08-07, version 4.3.2*

iPhone 14 Pro, updated.
*In filtering, the sides of the screen are cut off. On the left, I see what is likely the word lactose or fructose etc, but all I see are the last two letters. On the right, I see part of an unhappy face.
* When searching ingredients, whether from the category of food or from the certified list, most returns are recipes or premade products that contain that food.
*There doesn't appear a category for diabetics or allergies, celiac, so many foods are presented when the user knows they can't have it.

It's pretty basic and not what I expected. A trial period before buying would have been useful. I don't think I'll be using this app much.

### 5/5 — The best food tracker!

*2026-07-31, version 4.3.2*

I use this every day for every meal and have for a few years now.

### 4/5 — Some enhancements recommended

*2026-07-27, version 4.3.2*

Is easy to use and the traffic light and stack cups are useful. What would be great is if you could add food straight from the guide to your diary without having to type meals, and a way for foods added in a 2-3 hour window to add towards a stack cup tracker within the diary, so you don’t have to be nervous about hitting your limit of FODMAPs, given a meal is rarely just one or two ingredients.

### 1/5 — Feels like an ad

*2026-07-24, version 4.3.2*

I’m very disappointed in this app. The food search (which seems to be its primary use) feels poorly designed and like an ad for companies that have paid to be included. Half of the things I pull up are specific brand names, all of which are green (so ok to eat). For example, I searched rice cereal: Rice Krispies are green, but the generic puffed rice cereal is yellow (and yes, I understand they might use different sweeteners, but it still feels like an ad when the name brand is promoted like that). Additionally, specific home delivery meal kits keep showing up when I just search for a vegetable, cluttering everything up and making it hard to use. The serving size of items is also misleading. A fruit might be marked as green but when you look at the serving sizes, it will say 2.1 oz is green but 2.3 oz is yellow and 3 oz is red, and maybe the people who made this app have never eaten fruit before, but there is very little difference in a 2.1 oz serving of fruit and a 3 oz serving of fruit.

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2026-07-16, version 4.3.2*

I’ve had IBS all my life and found out about the low FODMAP elimination diet by my GI doctor as an adult. I downloaded this years ago and I have found out some of my intolerances that I didn’t know. When I was little I was always sick to my stomach and had a lot of pain and cramping. Didn’t know my intolerance to lactose. Back then they diagnosed me with IBS but blamed it on stress. Nobody did anything for me. My mom took me doctor to doctor and nothing. Not even a mention of an antacid for my reflux. You guys have done amazing work and I’m so thankful for you. This is an amazing app studied by amazing professors and students. If there was one thing I could add to the app is a filter that I could set to my intolerance group and see all the food from all the different groups together. Instead I have to search each item and take a pen and paper and write down all the intolerances in that group!! That would make this app so much better for me at least!! Thank you for your great work.

### 1/5 — NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY AT ALL

*2026-06-21, version 4.3.2*

I am not a chef, nor can I read the creators of this app’s minds while cooking. While making a recipe like the chicken risotto, it tells you to sauté the vegetables all the way on high in the beginning. And then proceeds to tell you everything else you need to add. Not once does it tell you to reduce the heat. So here I am burning the living you know what out of this entire dish and now it’s disgusting and I wasted my money. And my kitchen is a burnt mess on top of it. I do not know how to cook anything without detailed instructions. Not telling when to reduce heat, or simmer, that’s a huge problem. Should have been a disclaimer about the level of cooking knowledge required for this app.
