Ages 3-6. Designed for both parents and schools, this app beautifully provides children a way to "write" words in order to express themselves prior to mastering the use of pencil and paper! This is a preschool & kindergarten language activity that will help children learn the correct spelling of simple words. We originally published this app back in 2011. After observing what others were doing with the Movable Alphabet, such as the Montessori Crosswords app, we wanted to create something that was more academic in nature vs. being more entertaining. So, we designed a very clean looking app that has a "manual" feel to it in order to closely resemble the physical Movable Alphabet material. Over the passed several years we've been thrilled to see schools systems incorporate our Movable Alphabet into their curriculums! We're extremely excited about the new 3.0 update that came out in September! Many teachers and parents requested that we provide feedback to the child whether or not a word is spelled correctly. We wanted to do that, but in a way that still maintains the manual feel of the Movable Alphabet, without letters snapping into perfect positions. Well, after a lot of hard work, we've finally got something that has a great feel to it! Please watch the preview video to see how it works! After learning to identify and blend the sounds of the letters of the alphabet children are often ready to build words on their own. However, the ability to write them down with paper and pencil may require much more time and practice to acquire. Therefore, Dr. Montessori prepared the Movable Alphabet for children to “write” words, long before mastering the physical skill of writing. Children can phonetically sound out words, one letter at a time to build words. The app includes over 40 images of simple words, along with audio pronunciations and instructions, for children to practice with. Additional word sets are available, too! To help the child construct the words correctly, they can touch the buttons in the box or the letters themselves to hear their sound, giving them the ability to "search" for the sound they are thinking of to build their word! ***** About the Word Sets: Once the children begin the process of composing three letter words (consonant-vowel-consonant) with the Movable Alphabet they are encouraged to move on to building four and five letter words. In our experience in the classroom, it is best to follow the CVC words with four letter, CVCC words, which often seems to be easier for the blending of sounds leading up to the actual reading of words. Mastering word building requires lots of practice and repetition. Following this, we introduce four letter, CCVC words and then five letter, CCVCC words. As the children master these skills they often explore the process all on their own and have fun expressing their own ideas using the Movable Alphabet! Seriously? You have one job with an alphabet app. ### 2/5 — No feature to save progress. Finicky about word building. *2023-06-07* It’s June 2013 and since I saw similar comments from a long time ago, I thought that these bugs were fixed. We bought this app to contribute to the work this team is doing, but I’m disappointed that there is no feature to save work. My kid has to start over every time and this is very frustrating, after they successfully completed the work before (Montessori way). Further, the rectangles where the letters have to be placed a fuzzy about where the letter has to be positioned. This is not relevant to the movable alphabet, so it’s also very frustrating to my kid, when the box doesn’t turn green. It would be great to have the save feature and the rectangles be less buggy. ### 1/5 — Sound wont work *2022-02-15* The sound won’t work for us. Thanks ### 3/5 — Great but flawed *2021-01-26* The app is just what I was looking for except that it sometimes doesn’t sense where the letters are placed exactly so sometimes the game doesn’t say it’s right (green box) even when it is. This leads to lots of frustration and confusion. ### 5/5 — Question *2020-04-03* My son loves the app. My only complaint is that half the time he identifies the letters of the word correctly but the box does not turn green. Is there a reason for this or a way to fix this issue? **Developer response:** Hi don't forget to place the dot over the letters i and j - you need these to complete the word! We're glad your son is enjoying the app! ### 3/5 — A little disappointed *2020-02-15* Sometimes the word directly across from the picture doesn’t match what the speaker says... you end up having words and their spelling match diagonally (fox=pen, pen=fox) Also the letter tray has the alphabet letters out of order in the bottom row. For as anal as the Montessori method is, I am dismayed that these obvious mistakes haven’t been fixed by now. **Developer response:** Thanks for pointing this out. Looks like this occurs on the phone version only. We'll fix it right away and publish and update! ### 5/5 — Great App Fun To Use And Helps Child Learn Fast *2019-04-04* Its a nice app but just on the 3rd page in word set 1, the box for letter “j” for “jam” is looking half colored, I checked the next pages and there are many more like that and that is only on the word set 1. The problem with that is those words with the half colored boxes don't light up when answered correctly, which results in frustration. I was so happy to see my child working on the letter words only for 5 minutes. I really hope it is fixed ASAP Update 04.04.19 Thank you for the response, we have actually figured out the problem soon after I posted the review. Totally my bad I am embarrassed for my comments when I realized this. The app IS working great, my son loves it and it does help my son learn the phonics even his Montessori teacher noticed his progress. It is a FIVE STAR! At the moment it remains too intimidating for my preschooler. **Developer response:** Here's a tip. Instead of focusing on constructing the word by sight, do so by sound. That's why you can touch each letter in the box and hear how it sounds. Children can thus search for the sound they think they need and locate the letters.
