I have found it helpful because it has taught me to write pretty good cursive. Although the app is good, there is one key flaw. Whenever I try to finish writing something it glitches or whenever I try to do an i or a j it glitches as well which makes the writing look ugly or weird at that part. I really like this app and will continue using it, but this app would be 5 stars for me and my friends if the apps developers solved these glitches/issues. Thanks! ### 4/5 — Great! Perhaps a ‘mode’ that only lets you progress if you’ve done well? Like a hard mode, or something. 2 (important) : A mute button. I understand the narrator, but I wish there was a settings function that allowed me to mute the audio, so I could play Spotify over it. If you would please consider these, I would be greatful. However, the phonics are slightly off and they don’t give examples for the blends. ### 4/5 — Would be 5 stars, except... *2019-12-17* The narrator adds an “uh” sound after some of the consonants, saying “buh,” “duh,” and “guh,” among others. The correct method is to give the pure phonics only (“b,” “d,” “g”), as adding “uh” confuses children later as they try to build words by sound. Additionally, I wish it didn’t say “you did it” after each three part lesson. It gives no time for the child to realize “*I* did it.” The goal of a Montessori education is for the child to develop intrinsic motivation, not hear constant praise from the instructor. ### 5/5 — Easy way to learn how to write *2015-11-19, version 1.6* Recommended. ### 5/5 — Supports Montessori Intro to Letters during Sensitive Period *2014-03-08* This app supports a three or four year old Montessori child's facility with letters and alphabet during the so-called sensitive period. Mimics sandpaper letters but the only misstep here is that the app does not provide tactile feedback. Excellent app in just about every other material respect. ### 4/5 — Not For Older Students *2013-12-29* I purchased this app thinking that I would be able to use it with my 5th grade students to practice their letters using a stylus. The letters are huge and appropriate for tracing with a finger — and since my students don't do any finger writing, this app will not work for me, but would be great for a second grade student who is learning to write cursive for the first time. The app worked well on my iPad2, the user interface was easy to follow, and graphics were pleasing to the eye. A more accurate description in the "Details" of the app would have saved me $4.99. I would, however, recommend this for younger students in second and third grade. ### 5/5 — They've done it again! *2013-11-19, version 1.1* As a public school teacher in Canada, I use Montessoriumís apps pretty well exclusively with my gr1-3 students. I generally work with students who require some extra support in early phonological awareness skills, reading and writing. I choose Montessorium apps for their developmental appropriateness, proper phonological awareness, and the brilliant beauty of design. These apps are absorbing and engaging - without distracting “gaming” elements that complicate a childís intrinsic motivation for learning. Having used Intro to Letters and Alpha Writer on a daily basis, I was waiting for Intro to Cursive with great anticipation. Because my son attends a Montessori school, I was excited to use this app with him at home for cursive practice and consolidation. In my professional practice, I am also excited to use the Intro to Cursive app with my students. In our provincial curriculum, cursive doesnít play a part in early literacy, however, it does appear as a presentation option in our grade 3-8 curriculum. This app is an excellent classroom resource as is provides practice and integrated correction. The sound/symbol connection is excellent for consolidation. Although this topic is widely debated (in Ontario), for some students cursive offers a more fluid path to written expression. Often recommended by Occupational Therapists as a option for students with fine motor difficulties, this app is also an excellent resource, providing support and scaffolding. For those junior teachers teaching cursive in their classrooms, Intro to Cursive is another way to practice and consolidate skills - over and above paper/pencil tasks. For example, when I am writing it has arrows pointing on where I should go! and it completely ruins the letter in trying to write. it stops me and makes me mess up! Just let me trace the letter without having the arrows! Also the narrator sounds so dull when she is saying good job or nice work. saying that should encourage the child not discourage the child using the app! Also, the noise while your tracing letters is horrible! It’s sounds like nails on a chalkboard and while I’m trying to learn I have to get a huge headache while I’m learning! I mean like school is already hard enough! If you could just fix these bugs and hire a new narrator this game could be a five star rating. And also the fact I’m an eight year old wasting all my time writing a review the first day I got the app is horrible. ### 3/5 — Not sure👎🏼 *2020-05-11* When you are finish it makes you do it again after you Artie did it.☹️ ### 3/5 — Nice idea but some consonant sounds not properly pronounced *2015-06-15* While the letters are introduced nicely and with a background that is clean and non-distracting, it will be confusing, especially to dyslexic students when certain vowel sounds, such as /k/ and /b/ are pronounced with a vowel sound attached; /schwa/ or "uh". I was actually looking for a handwriting program that had lower case cursive letters all starting on the baseline, which this one seemed to, so that part of the program is good, but will be using with sound off or returning for a refund. ### 3/5 — No tactile with horrible sound! *2014-03-13* I tried this app because being a guide I wanted to be aware of technological enhancements or tools for the original materials. While I enjoy the visual it misses the critical aspect of tactile perception. Also, the scratching noise of tracing the sandpaper sounds like nails on a chalkboard! Ich!! My daughter turns 4 next month and has been using it since 6 weeks ago when her school closed. Her teacher recommended it because they learn cursive first in their class. She is enjoys tracing the letters and picking out the sounds. She will go for about 10 minutes, which is the age-appropriate attention span for this kind of thing I believe. Presenting the sounds in groups of 3 is great. Listening to the sounds as you write them is great. Setting it for Spanish is great! The arrows showing how to draw the letter are great. The thing that is not great is that sometimes the tracing does not match up exactly with the letter, which is confusing for her, and also, the tracing requires the child to keep drawing PAST the place where the letter ends or else you can’t move on. So sometimes we are staring at an obviously traced, completed letter, but it won’t consider it complete. I wish the sounds would come in Spanish too, especially vowels. Also, the letters are a bit big, so little hands that aren’t completely dexterous yet sometimes accidentally grab off-screen and shut the app/open my camera/something else weird. Overall, good app that we enjoy.
