Years later I still experience something special when I play MV III. Some people will nitpick and complain that it doesn’t live up to the first two games, but the very nature of experience makes it almost impossible to live up to the magic that you felt on your first encounter with something so unique. It simply can’t have the impact of your first time because it won’t have the elements of surprise and newness. That is the Law of Diminishing Returns, and it can’t be avoided. But that doesn’t mean the new experience can’t hold beauty and delights of its own. Instead of focusing on what you think is lacking, try focusing on the new gameplay features, the new art and audio that add to the experience. They clearly put the same effort into making this game that went into the others. The game is accessible and familiar but it’s also feels grander and more epic in certain ways. I haven’t completed the game yet because I want to savor what I’m guessing will be the last chapter of a Monument Valley Trilogy.
