## What is Mood Reader?

Mood Reader is a book recommendation app that starts from a different question. Not what other people rated a book. Not what an algorithm decided is popular right now. It asks what a reader is in the mood for — in plain language — and returns books that match the shape of that answer.

—

Three things it does

01. Semantic prompts
Describe what to read in plain language. "Something quiet and observant." "A romance that isn't formulaic." "Whatever will pull me out of a slump." Mood Reader returns books that match the description, ranked by fit to taste rather than by crowd rating.

02. Self Portrait
A written reading of the reader — generated from the shape of a library and the reflections left along the way. Not a personality quiz. Not a genre list. Not a score. A close reading of what books, together, reveal about a reader.

03. Ambient recommendations
As a library grows and one-sentence reflections accumulate, Mood Reader learns and surfaces books that fit what comes next. Every recommendation arrives with a short rationale for why it fits.

—

An independent app, built to be worth using

No investors. No acquisition target. No ad SDKs, no analytics tools, no advertising identifiers. Mood Reader stores what a reader tells it, and nothing else. Reading history stays with the person who created it.

Built by one person in Washington State.

—

Import from what already exists

Full library imports work from Goodreads exports and Kindle libraries. Shelf photos work as a fast on-ramp. Ten favorite books is enough to start recommending. Deeper imports sharpen the results but aren't required.

—

Reflections instead of star ratings

Star ratings summarize a book but don't say much about a reader. A one-sentence reflection ("surprised me by how much I cared about the sister") gives Mood Reader far more signal than five stars alone. Reflections stay in the reader's Master Library and shape both Self Portrait and future recommendations.

Free at launch. iOS 18 or later. iPhone only.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5 — 2026-08-19

Version 1.4 (Build 15) — What's New

Finishing a book just got faster.
Now when you mark a book finished, you can rate it (up to 5 stars) and mark it as a Literary Pillar without leaving the screen. The old "find it in your Master Reading List first" dance is gone.

Reflections, on your terms.
Save a reflection with just a rating, just written thoughts, or both. Whatever fits the moment.

Your Pillars, front and center.
Literary Pillars now pin to the top of your Master Reading List. The books that define your taste stay one glance away.

Self-Portrait feels more solid.
Fixed a crash that could hit on refresh across Master Library, Behind the Portrait, and Refine My Taste. Pull to refresh should just work now.

Imports tell you what happened.
After a library import you'll see clear counts — books matched, books added, ratings brought in, dates enriched, statuses updated. No more black box.

Small under-the-hood cleanups.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-10

• Master Library, Literary Pillars, and The Questions now load independently of your Self-Portrait
• Import from Libby and StoryGraph, or add any book by hand
• Every book now shows its match percentage, consistent across Home, Search, and shelf scans
• Search respects the author you type, and collapses editions into one result
• Promote a book to your Literary Pillars in one tap
• Thousands of new and repaired covers

### 1.3 — 2026-08-01

Small refinements that make Mood Reader feel more like yours.

• Share your Self-Portrait — a new compact card celebrates the shape of your reading life, ready for wherever you want to share it.

• Smarter book search — Mood Reader now looks beyond our library when you search. Type any book, and if it isn't already in our shelves, we'll find and add it for you.

• A more focused Search tab — cleaner layout, faster keyboard, and a lighter path to Shelf Scan.

• Refined onboarding — picking the books that anchor your reading life is a little more forgiving now.

Thanks for reading with us.

### 1.2 — 2026-07-31

Two new ways to let Aura see you.

Refresh your Self-Portrait
When your reading has shifted—new books added to your library, favorites pinned, reflections written, progress logged—you can now ask Aura to draw you a new portrait. Thirty marks since the last portrait, and the shape can be redrawn. Tap Refresh from your Self-Portrait.

Scan your shelf
Point your camera at a stack of books, and Aura will read the spines and pull them into your library. A faster way to bring the shelves you already love into the app.

Small refinements
Steadier layouts, quieter transitions, and a handful of fixes gathered from what you've told us.

### 1.1 — 2026-07-28

Version 1.1 — a bigger library and smarter search.

• 316,000 books, including deep catalog for Brené Brown, Malcolm Gladwell, Haruki Murakami, Michel Foucault, Michel de Montaigne, and hundreds more literary and non-fiction authors.

• Rebuilt search — one field for both title and author. Type "Murakami" to see 16 books scored against your taste. Type an ambiguous title and see every match ranked, not just the most popular.

• Compatibility scoring is now honest. Books shown to you now include a MATCH % out of 100 for how well they fit your reading identity. Locked entries show only their tier (loose / strong / exceptional) — no fake numbers to game the recommendation.

• External book auto-ingest. If you search for a real book we don't have yet, we fetch it from OpenLibrary on the spot and score it for you.

• Pillars refresh. Editing your pillars now surfaces the full catalog for whichever author you're editing, so you can pick from every book they've written, not just the one we happened to recommend.

Thank you for reading with us.
