### 5/5 — Helpful

*2026-10-22, version 1.10.17*

This calming game helped me overcome my anxiety and learn new strategies to help. It is so relaxing and makes multiple simple tasks to help me feel progress.

### 5/5 — I enjoy the app

*2026-10-21, version 1.10.17*

I’ve been using it daily, very mindful and good advice. Cute and fun customization.

### 4/5 — Love the app… not the ads

*2026-10-19, version 1.10.17*

Edit to add:
~I am keeping the original text for transparency, but I’m happy to say they listened and swiftly corrected the situation. While bullying was not the intent, they agreed it was not fair play. I will continue using both finch and Foxtale as they are both well produced apps and I’ve found success in using them to manage my productivity and emotional awareness respectively. ~

I like the app, it provides what I started needing compared to finch. Mind you, Finch is GREAT for keeping me accountable for my tasks and self care, it absolutely saved my life, but I needed to get more in touch with my emotion. I’m vibing with Foxtale so far, and almost bought the pack actually… until I saw an ad. I don’t feel like I can trust an app labeled as self care when their ads feel like a smear campaign. You should be able to uplift yourself and your product without needing to tear others down. The ads genuinely felt like the kind of bullying you see between students running for class President. Currently on the fence about sticking with this app, or going through other Reddit recommendations.

### 5/5 — Instagram Brought Me Here

*2026-10-19, version 1.10.17*

I saw this app on instagram and I was attracted by the simple illustrations of the characters. The app feels like a living journal. I enjoy waiting for my fox to deliver my journal entry and listening to the mentor at the end. One piece of advice that I am still using at the start of my experience with Foxtale is “I am not my thoughts”.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2026-10-19, version 1.10.17*

This helps helps lower your mood by helping you understand your emotions better. You not only journal but you learn something from journaling. The prompts already come written out which helps! It’s a good app and is really calming. Download it to see for yourself ☺️💕

### 5/5 — So cute

*2026-10-18, version 1.10.17*

I just got it and love it so much, foxes are my favorite animal which is a big motivator for why I got it, a fox companion? YES PLEASE

### 5/5 — Finch for emotions!

*2026-10-17, version 1.10.17*

I love this app! I truly appreciate that it gives you references of the information it is giving you so you can see it is based on research! Plus my fox is just adorable

### 5/5 — Hiii this is Violet

*2026-10-17, version 1.10.17*

Foxtail is so fun and the fox is cute and it’s just so calming❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Happy

### 5/5 — A game changer for my mental health journey

*2026-10-17, version 1.10.17*

Ive been looking forward to using this app every day, even when I’m feeling down. I love the mood tracking, it challenges you to put a name to your emotions which really helps me process what I’m feeling. Not to mention, it’s adorable. I’ve been using it for 2 weeks and already feel like I’m making improvements in my mental health habits.

### 5/5 — Love this game

*2026-10-16, version 1.10.17*

I don’t like apps that much but I added this as a widget on my phone, journal twice a day, and it tracks my emotions and why. It’s pretty freaking cool. Plus reminds me of animal crossing. Cute characters that you help understand yourself with by talking to. You get to decorate your room, and customize your character. 1000/10 recommend

### 5/5 — ❤️❤️❤️

*2026-10-16, version 1.10.17*

I love Foxtale! This app is so helpful. It helps my mental and physical health.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2026-10-16, version 1.10.17*

Very welcoming about understanding emotions. I wish I could’ve found this app when I needed it months ago, but I’m glad I found it now.

### 5/5 — I’m enjoying myself

*2026-10-16, version 1.10.17*

I’ve been happy using this. It motivates me to look at myself and how I can improve. And the price isn’t crazy high like I was worried about.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2026-10-16, version 1.10.17*

I find foxtale to be a great option to guide your journaling for free because it teaches you about emotions lets you look back at previous emotions and lets you customize what you do when you do and its great! The only bad thing about it is the minor spelling mistakes but those are very tiny

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2026-10-15, version 1.10.16*

This one drew me in cause I love foxes, and like I struggle with all the things this App is supposed to help with, and I’m loving it so far, it explains emotions, and helps make reflection and acceptance of oneself easier and more comprehensible! If you struggle with your emotions at all this is a good outlet for them as well.

### 5/5 — Finch but journaling

*2026-10-14, version 1.10.15*

If you like the finch app this is almost exactly the same thing but for journaling and developing emotional maturity.

### 5/5 — Beyond helpful

*2026-10-12, version 1.10.15*

My best friend told me about this app while I was in an intensive outpatient program. I have a hard time journaling, there are years where I can journal really well in Books and on my iPad, but there are seasons that it’s much more difficult. This has been a joyful way to be able to track my progress, as well as learned a lot of very helpful strategies and reminders.

### 5/5 — The best

*2026-10-12, version 1.10.15*

The best so far that has helped me a lot I love this i recommend to anyone

### 5/5 — Actually, genuinely helpful

*2026-10-12*

I’ve been using Finch for a couple years and this is definitely a copycat, but in a way where I use both. It’s not replacing anything.

I’ve also been actively working on my mental health for years now, and this app was giving me new info within the first few days. I’ve been using it for two weeks and have no plans to stop. It’s made me aware of some trends that I didn’t realize I had, and it expressly says it’s not a replacement for therapy, but it’s been more useful to me than 95% of talk therapy has been.

It sure feels like a new app compared to finch, though. And yep. The first review was in Dec 2025. It needs some free tier expansion imo but I get they’re just trying to make money. They do have a survey I’ve filled out for what suggestions on new features and what you want to see next, and I’ve told them my ideas, so we’ll see what happens.

### 5/5 — Good app

*2026-10-11, version 1.10.15*

This app really helped me with my anxiety, and even the Free version is amazing. I highly recommend.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Unethical Knock-Off of Finch App

*2026-10-11, version 1.10.15*

This app has copied so many features and design elements of Finch, and it’s really bothering me! Why would I want to trust my emotions to people who are malevolent and taking advantage of another app I have loved for years. This feels unethical and tacky. Also they slam Finch in their marketing. Gross! I can’t in good conscience pay money to someone ripping of people who have helped me on a different app!

### 1/5 — Force Closes

*2026-08-15, version 1.10.10*

Really excited about this until the app just quit on me 3 times trying to do my first journal entry. Now I’m over it :’(

### 1/5 — No free version

*2026-07-18, version 1.10.6*

This app as far as I can tell does not have a free version. The first time I opened the app it forced me into agreeing to a 7 day free trial before I could even start setting up an account or use any other features on the app. The app won’t send you a notification when this free trial is up and will automatically charge your card. Incredibly disappointing for a mental health app. It’s basically just a glorified digital journal and it doesn’t really teach you anything about depression/anxiety than surface level stuff that’s already floating around all over the place on the internet. Could be so much better than what it is. Could actually be useful, but it just falls short.

### 1/5 — Great app, no ads, and everyone can benefit from the free version

*2026-01-21*

I really enjoy this app and find it helpful. The daily check-ins have helped me immensely in understanding and reflecting on my emotions and why I’m feeling them. The app has helped me regain control of emotional spirals (ruminating thoughts, catastrophizing, etc) and it’s also just really fun and cute. I genuinely think everyone can benefit from using this app.

My one and only gripe is the price of the “Plus” subscription which is not at all required in order to use and enjoy the app. (I know the devs are very cognizant of affordability and making sure that critical features aren’t paywalled so that even people who can’t afford a subscription can use and find significant value in their apps. I really appreciate that.) I also use and subscribe to Bearable, another great app by the same devs, and I’d like to subscribe to Foxtale but an annual subscription is more than twice the price of Bearable. It would be nice if there were a savings bundle to subscribe to both at once.

But even without a subscription it’s an easy 5 stars from me!

Edit: Revised down from 5 stars because the new update asks you to disclose personal health information with the tenuous promise to “personalize the experience” and there is no option to opt out or not participate. I’m really disappointed to see this dev team gathering such invasive data points in the current political climate with zero regard for user privacy and no without giving users the option to not participate in these “features”. Yuck.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for the kind words!!

EDIT - Hi Charlie, there is an option at the bottom called "None of the above" to opt out. We asked users to optionally disclose their conditions/disorders to help us understand who we might need to tailor content to, or what changes we might need to make to current content. Considering there is no sign in required for the app, this data is aggregated and totally anonymised and not attached to any personal information. I hope this clears things up, but let me know if you have other questions at support@joinfoxtale.com. Hi Charlie did you have any further questions?

### 1/5 — Cute but overpriced and doesn’t integrate with bearable

*2025-12-12*

I think the fox and interface are cute and it makes me think about my moods/feelings, but they don't transfer to the Bearable app, so I have to do it manually for the same app company. The journaling prompts are nice but not better than free iPhone options. I can do everything except the cartoon fox and without a new high subscription. I found a 50% off early offer on Bearable Reddit, but I couldn't use it since I already found the app in the App Store under apps from Bearable.

**Developer response:** Hi Reid, would you like to have a chat to discuss how we could improve Foxtale for you? I'm running some calls with early users and would love to find out how we can be better. Thanks

### 2/5 — Not at your pace

*2026-06-17, version 1.10.3*

The app is cute and has a lot of potential, but you can’t go at your own pace; you’re forced to go with the app’s pace, which is extremely slow. It only lets you progress a tiny bit every day, and there’s zero explanation for it. It’s basically like if you went to a new therapist who asked “What does sadness mean to you?”, then pushed you out the door and said “we’ll talk more about it tomorrow!” I truly don’t understand why it’s set up this way.

### 3/5 — It’s cute, but…

*2026-10-02*

Idk. I wanted this app to really be like animal crossing but for emotional health (like they claimed), but it’s just like Finch. It’s cute. It’s just not rewarding enough for my adhd brain. I’m over the clothing. You can’t really move much around in the room. You have to pay to be able to teach a lost animal what you learned from the deer, which is a great feature because after you learn the thing you have to remember the thing and teach someone else, further implanting it in your brain… but that’s only with the subscription. It’s also just not realistic for mood tracking, for me anyway. You send your fox on a journey with a mood check-in, and that goes in your calendar, but what if I do that at 9am and then have a totally different day after that. Or what if I do it before bed and I can’t remember all the highs and lows of the day? I think I once saw an option to add another thing after you’ve sent your fox on their way, but idk.

**Developer response:** Thanks for taking the time to write such thoughtful feedback. We really want Foxtale to feel like a little world you return to, rather than just a mood tracker with clothes, so making the home and adventure side more interactive and rewarding is something we’re continuing to work on.
You can add multiple check-ins/journal entries throughout the day, so one check-in doesn’t have to represent your whole day. But your review makes it clear we haven’t made that obvious enough, which is really useful for us to know.

We’re also really glad you liked the idea of teaching another animal what you’ve learned. We’re continuing to think carefully about the balance between free and Premium features too.
Thanks again for giving Foxtale a try and for explaining what you’d hoped to get from it.

### 3/5 — Bummed about the constant pressure to upgrade. Not great for my mental health

*2026-09-17, version 1.10.12*

This app is helpful for processing emotions and understanding them, but I do not like how they are constantly trying to get us to upgrade by showing all the add-on options that free users don’t get, like the advanced mood tracker information we don’t have access to and the items in the store.

Every time at the store, it only lets me choose between like three items in the first row, and those paying get all of the other items in the other rows as options, so we have to see constantly what we are missing out on.

I really do enjoy the app. The character is a cute companion, I enjoy the readings, the journal prompts and mood journaling are excellent, and I appreciate the concept.

I understand the app needs to make a profit, but I wish they could find a better way that doesn’t make us feel left out and be constantly reminded… this is a mental health app after all.

### 3/5 — Not for me

*2026-06-22, version 1.10.4*

I saw recommendations about this app, and at first I thought it would be a good fit, but after a couple weeks of using it, it feels more annoying than anything. I don’t like to journal on my phone, and I am frustrated sometimes when *people* ask me how I feel, so to have an app ask me how I feel and dig into what that all stems from just doesn’t work with my brain. I’m sure it’s great for some people, but not for me.

### 3/5 — Pay

*2026-01-01, version 1.7.16*

Of course you have to pay for it because why would anything be free especially when it comes to your mental health

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — very nice i’m happy to use this

*2026-10-28*

love this. thanks to the team who made this. love you guys

### 5/5 — Feels helpful

*2026-10-27*

I’ve tried a few apps like this, and I did like Finch, but this feels more productive. Reinforces and refreshes my understanding of things I sort of know, with repetition and reframings that don’t feel repetitive. I’m enjoying this.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-10-27*

Self-knowledge

### 5/5 — Incredible (free version)

*2026-10-27, version 1.10.17*

I have tried many journaling apps to try to get to know myself better and get a better handle on my thoughts and emotions and none of them measure up to Foxtale. The instant gratification of collecting coins for taking care of your mental health is absolutely perfect. I come back daily, multiple times a day

### 5/5 — Too cute

*2026-10-27, version 1.10.17*

I actually may be rightly obsessed with this!

### 5/5 — Actually Insightful

*2026-10-26, version 1.10.17*

I’ve used multiple apps for journaling or keeping track of my feelings, but this one seems to be the best so far and I’ve only had it for a week! I enjoy the little journey and having to take care of this little creature, it gives me a reason to check in every day. What I ALSO love about this is how much research has gone into the responses and answers. As someone who studied Psychology and already knows the basics of most DBT skills and how to cope with emotions, there are facts and perspectives given in this game that even I have never read or considered before. Worth the subscription, especially since it was discounted!

### 5/5 — This saved me from myself

*2026-10-25, version 1.10.17*

I actually started using this about a week now and I already noticed significant changes in my attitude with life and started actually taking care of myself because of it. My little fox companion actually gives me something to look forward everyday and apply myself when it comes to selfcare. I am so grateful for the devs for creating such a beautiful world in the app as well! :)

### 5/5 — Helpful Mood Tracker and DBT Skills

*2026-10-24, version 1.10.17*

Impressive journaling app with easygoing game-like mechanics without being overly time consuming. Very helpful handbook to access DBT skills, interactive dialogues that don’t feel overly “therapy lecturing” but preserve the message. Mood tracker function and journal to help log and track moods and correlate potential triggers but offer access to support to help regulate. Helpful cozy design and vibe as well. Hoping this app continues to be awesome.

### 5/5 — So Helpful!

*2026-10-24*

My husband and I both have the app and are enjoying it so much! We find that it reinforces the lessons we learn in therapy. It has been helpful with issues like Bipolar, anxiety, stress, and OCD, to name a few. The mood charting is similar to the Zones of Regulation that are taught in schools, and we can look back at the moods we’ve charted and journal entries to see patterns emerging. For example, I tend to have certain colors at the beginning of the week versus the end. Being able to dress up the little fox and decorate the room makes it fun to do every day, and we enjoy showing how we’ve decorated to each other. It also doesn’t have the pressure of having to login every day. If you miss a day, you just pick up where you left off. I highly recommend this app to anyone interested in charting moods, journaling, and learning coping skills!

### 5/5 — Please download this!

*2026-10-22, version 1.10.17*

I’ve never enjoyed an app so much. If you struggle to understand what’s within, please get this app. It makes it so easy to be able to open and write down things and openly express myself. Foxtale is hands down one of the most calming apps I’ve ever downloaded. Please invest in this.
