## What is Moraine?

Moraine is where everything you notice goes.

A thought at a traffic light. A link you'll want in a year. A voice memo on a walk. A
journal entry at the end of the day. Moraine takes all of it through whichever door is
nearest, and then does the filing for you.

Each thing that lands gets a title, a short summary and a handful of tags, written on
your device. You never have to name anything, file anything, or decide where it belongs.
You just put it in.

MORE DOORS THAN A NOTEBOOK NEEDS
• The app — a note, journal entry, link or voice memo, with photos and video attached
• The share sheet — from anywhere on iPhone or iPad
• Safari on Mac — clips the readable article, not the page furniture
• Siri and the Action Button — "Add a note to Moraine saying pick up oat milk"
• Home and Lock Screen widgets — one tap to a blank note or a recording
• The Mac menu bar, a global hotkey, and drag and drop

FIND IT BY WHAT YOU MEANT
Search matches words and meaning. Ask for "the argument about moving house" and Moraine
finds the entry where you never wrote any of those words. Every entry shows the ones
nearest to it in meaning, and old writing occasionally resurfaces on its own — an
anniversary, or something from years ago that is close to what you have been writing
lately.

WAYS BACK IN
A calendar that runs both directions: what you captured on a day, beside what was in
your diary. A map of where you were. A tag cloud. A photo wall. Stats. Separate journals
for work, travel, or whatever you keep apart.

BRING YOUR OLD JOURNAL WITH YOU
Moraine imports a Day One export — entries, dates, tags, places, weather, favourites,
photos and video — and Apple's Journal export too. Nothing is silently dropped: if
something can't come across, the result says so and counts it. Import is free and
untimed.

ON YOUR DEVICE, NOT OURS
There is no Moraine account and no Moraine server. Titles, summaries, tags, the search
index and voice transcription are all produced on your device. Your library lives on
your devices and syncs through your own private iCloud database, which nobody else —
including the developer — can read. No analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs.

The handful of things that touch a server are off until you switch them on, and the
privacy policy names every one of them.

YOURS TO TAKE, ALWAYS
Export writes plain JSON with your photos and recordings beside it as ordinary files,
and a page that shows the whole library in any browser with Moraine deleted. The format
is documented at hoardplovers.github.io/moraine-site/format.html, so someone else could
read it back. Snapshot to Files keeps a copy on the device with one tap. Save as PDF sets
a year, a journal or the lot as a book — cover, contents, a chapter a month, photographs
beside the writing — at A5, 6 × 9 in or A4. Export always works — during the trial,
after it, bought or not.

FREE FOR 14 DAYS
Everything works for two weeks. After that, capture, browsing, keyword search, import
and export keep working for good. The on-device intelligence — generated titles,
summaries and tags, search by meaning, related entries and resurfacing — is what unlocks
with a single one-time purchase. No subscription and no account. One purchase covers
your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Family Sharing is on.

Requires iOS 26 or macOS 26. Generated titles, summaries and tags are at their best on
devices that support Apple Intelligence; without it, Moraine still titles and tags every
entry using a simpler on-device method.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-09-11

Every export now comes with a page that shows your whole library in any browser — entries, dates, places, photographs, recordings — with no app and no network. Open it on a computer that has never had Moraine installed and it works, because it reads only the files beside it. The export format is written down on Moraine's website, completely enough that someone else could write a reader against it.

Snapshot to Files keeps a copy of everything on this device with one tap, no dialog: in Files under On My iPhone › Moraine › Snapshots. The last three are kept, and Settings says how long it has been since the last one.

Importing a journal now leaves a receipt in your library: how many entries came across, and every file the export mentioned but didn't contain, named one by one with the entry it belonged to. It is searchable and it stays. Export again with the missing files and import that folder, and only those gaps are filled — nothing is duplicated, and nothing you removed by hand comes back.

Sync you can see. Settings lists the entries that have changed on this device and not yet reached iCloud, tappable. An entry whose photograph is still on its way from iCloud says so where the picture will be. And if two of your devices edit the same entry while apart, Moraine keeps both versions rather than choosing: the second appears beside the first, titled as a conflicted copy and tagged #conflict.

Writing. Focus, in the composer's toolbar, holds the line you are writing at the same height on the screen and dims every other paragraph. Count words when you ask, never while you write. Line spacing and line width are in Settings › Appearance › Reading, and apply while reading and while writing.

Also in this update:
• A big import uses a fraction of the memory it did, so a ten-year library no longer risks being cut short on a phone.
• A photo the export contained but couldn't be read is now counted and named, rather than dropped.
• Five things you do can be felt: a capture saved, a favourite, a deletion, pausing the pipeline, and an import or export finishing.
• Markdown, not rich text, is now said plainly under every composer — on purpose, so what you write stays plain text you can take anywhere.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-07

Journals can wear a theme. Nine complete looks — accent, paper and typeface, each measured for legibility in light and in dark — and any journal can choose one, so Work and Travel are different rooms rather than the same room with a different dot. Settings → Journals → the journal → Theme. All Entries keeps the app's own look.

Save as PDF now sets your entries as a book: a cover, a contents, a chapter a month, photographs beside the writing. Choose one journal or all of them, a year, the tags you want and a page size — A5, 6 × 9 in or A4. A book of one journal is set in that journal's theme.

An entry's date and place can be corrected. Write up last weekend on a Tuesday and move it back to the weekend; pick the place from a search or from where you are, and the entry shows it on a small map with a hand-off to Apple Maps.

Also in this update:
• Apple Journal voice recordings now come across on import. Anything either importer cannot bring — a photo the export never wrote, a second recording — is counted and reported rather than dropped in silence.
• A film or book named at the end of a long entry is spotted now, not only one named near the start. When Moraine picks the wrong one, you can say which you meant.
• The sketch canvas takes the whole iPad. The calendar shades busy days instead of dotting them.
• Sync: each entry is enriched by one of your devices rather than all of them, so titles no longer fight and tags are no longer doubled. The Mac stops rebuilding its index every time its window takes focus.
• Faster with large libraries: the library, the calendar and the photo wall no longer re-read every entry to draw a frame, and a big import no longer floods Spotlight.
• Settings no longer reports the search model as installed when it will not load.
