Developed by a speech-language pathologist, Patti Hamaguchi, M.A., CCC-SLP, this app continues with the same playful, colorful and engaging format with a focus on 12 concepts: turn on/turn off; up/down, front/behind, on/under, put in/take out, above/below. This is a great speech-language therapy app for early language learners or children new to the English language! The uncluttered background is also perfect for autistic children so they can focus better and have multiple repetitions of a concept. Help the monkey go up the tree, but watch out! He likes to throw those coconuts! Pop the bubble that is above the bird. Put the elephant under the larger table. Help the squirrel go down the tree. Turn off the red radio. More Fun with Directions is designed to provide a fun and engaging way to practice listening, following directions, colors, comparatives (larger/smaller) spatial concepts, auditory memory and auditory processing. From the simplest of directions (“Turn on the lamp”) to the more complex (“Do you see a musical instrument with black and white keys? Put it behind the couch”) your child can grow and learn with this game over time. Colorful, vivid art and animations against a white background combine to create a complete game experience without visual clutter. Sound effects and surprises keep the game engaging! This app is a great choice for a toddler/preschooler, or any young child who would like to practice listening to or reading directions! Features include settings for text on/off, (to practice reading vs. listening) selecting specific concepts, replaying missed items and selecting the desired level of play: easy, intermediate or advanced. An added bonus that is included in this app is the optional “Superstar Direction” which allows additional practice for remembering (“What did you have to do?”) but also expressive language. The child’s response is recorded and played back. Superstar Directions are surprise questions that pop up at random times, but can easily be turned off if desired. It will appear as though it is going to and then returns to my home screen. I sent a request for help through the creator’s website and have received no help. Perfect for students who struggle with receptive language and concepts of in, under, and more. With 3 levels of difficulty and 12 different concepts presented with fun visuals and great feedback, the user will quickly begin to understand the concepts and improve direction following ability. This app is a winner with my special needs students who enjoy the special effects when they choose correctly. Educators will love the ability to track progress and set up for more then one player. As the child plays the score is shown and if the concept presented is a new one. The settings are easy to set and navigate. The app is wonderfully customizable and offers the ability to store and track student and/or group progress. There are three modes of practice: easy, intermediate, and advanced. Intermediate is the standard setting and offers two step directives with multi-choice answers. Easy mode offers one choice view alongside one-step directive prompts. Advanced mode offers multi-step directives and multi-choice answers with several choices provided in close similarity to test if child has listened closely. Each mode offers a Super-Star mode in which a directive is offered, acted out, then repeated back using the self-record option. I found this app to be very useful and believe it will provide ample practice for all children working on understanding and following directions properly. For children who struggle with processing or have a specific learning disability or cognitive disability/delay, or are on the spectrum, this app would be perfect to use as a means of implementing skills practice in understanding terms like: front, behind, above, etc. It will also assist in helping students understand and apply how to follow multi-step directives, which can be a difficult skill to master. Something I did notice is that for up and down, a child's understanding if those terms may not be properly recorded: for example a child chose a grey squirrel instead of a black squirrel to go down the tree. The app recoded the child did not comprehend the direction prompt for down, when in fact, the child did not properly differentiate the color black and grey. Every squirrel was going down and only needed tapped to go down, therefore, this data was not properly gathered by the app. Another very minor detail I would like to see changed is the constant request to place an ice cream cone on furniture such as a bed or sofa. While it may seem silly to some, to parents who may find food constantly placed inappropriately about the house, perhaps another item could be placed there instead. Regardless of these facts, this is a superb app and one worth having and using! I certainly recommend it!
