### 2/5 — Doesn’t feel ready for release

*2023-09-03*

Although the UI is easy to navigate, it still really feels like it’s in early development. I’d be willing to give it more of a chance in the future if it gets enough updates, but this just feels like stacking blocks rather than actual 3D modelling. No ability to work with a simple plane, manipulating edges or vertices, etc. If the target demographic is for kids otherwise I’d say it’s a good app, but there’s still issues with loading time. Copying blocks takes way too long for a simple app, and the 2D to 3D feature isn’t very intuitive.

### 5/5 — Morphi is the best!

*2023-04-13*

It’s also the only, unless you want to pay big bucks monthly. Just a suggestion if this is doable, unless it already does and I can’t find it; it would be great if there was a way to apply textures to the model that actually print out on a 3d printer. This program is tops for creating stl files to print. Your logic is just like mine. I was looking for something that would do what I wanted, the way I wanted it to, and somehow, I found this little gem. Great work people!

### 2/5 — Import Test

*2023-02-08, version 3.8.17*

I already have an app to do 3D modeling but looking for a way to render as my pro can’t use the new render software. There is no way to import an item and test in the free version. I would buy if I could see what it can do.

### 5/5 — Packed with 3D Modeling and Rendering Power

*2023-01-26, version 3.8.17*

I acquired the Morphi app to render 3D models, on my iPad, for 3D FDM printing.

Morphi is not intended to be a Solidworks type CAD app, but I have found ways to manipulate it to build complex and precise models for printed parts that I have sold commercially. Many customers of these parts are blown away to learn they were modeled on a mobile device.

The level of precision that can be managed in Morphi is 0.1 millimeter, or .004 inch, which is equal to the output precision (resolution) of your average FDM printer.

I like being able to work on my 3D models and drawings while traveling, on long flights and between them, on a mobile device instead of being chained to a desktop computer or notebook PC.

Morphi can, with a very simple procedure, export your models and drawings to STL files, which are ready for uploading to a slicer to convert to g-code for your printer.

As with any powerful drafting tool, there is a learning curve. It took about 24 hours for me to develop general proficiency with the Morphi tools and functions mostly by trial-and-error poking around. The tutorial videos with the screen capture recordings are useful, but it would be more helpful to show the actual hand and finger placements and movements, and to ensure that the tool panels shown in the videos actually match the current product layouts.

That said, there are some quirks:

1. When adding shapes to an existing model, it is impossible to get perfect alignment along flat surfaces. It doesn’t matter how much you fiddle with the manual, numeric entries into the XYZ scale and location, or the alignment template — the joined surfaces will always be off by a thousandths of an inch or so, making the “seam” between the old and new objects visible as a hair-line step.

I deal with this by creating a rectangle object, positioning it so that it overlaps or “intersects” with the surface I am trying to align for level, and then I use the “subtract” function to cleave across the irregular surface. This, of course, changes object dimensions and measurements, which need to be accounted for before actual 3D printing.

It would be useful if Morphi’s developers could add a “snap” tool to perfectly align surfaces from two objects, such as when stacking cubes or cylinders.

2. The alignment quirk described above creates challenges for 3D printing where portions of the object composed from multiple shapes, will punch through the “floor” of the drawing on the vertical or ‘z’ axis. These excesses have to be trimmed away and leveled off in Morphi, otherwise your 3D model will not have a solid base for holding contact with your printer bed.

When you go to slice your 3D model, if the skirt in the printing preview is underneath your object and not around it — that is a clue that the base on your object is not perfectly level and flat with the floor.

It would be useful if Morphi’s developers would add a “subtract floor” function.

3. Frequently and inexplicably, objects will shift their position after “merging.” Sometimes this happens and sometimes it doesn’t. I haven’t discovered any pattern of root causes other than the shifts are more likely to occur when there have been multiple rotations applied to one or more objects being merged, and when the objects are deeply intersecting with each other.

This can be extremely frustrating when it happens after a complex model has taken many hours to draft in Morphi. I am uncertain what the fix would be except to make this unwanted shifting completely go away.

4. There is no mechanism for outlining a portion of an object and increasing or decreasing the dimensions inside the outline. Often, I have a need to extend only a portion of an object and not just “grow” the overall proportions. Currently, to selectively increase length of a portion of an object, I have to add on another shape to the object. Without a snap alignment function this can add hours to the adjustment procedure.

5. The XYZ position movements always move away from the center of the project floor when toggling the (+) control, and towards the center of the project floor when toggling the (-) control. When one dives deep into a drawing, it is very easy to lose one’s point of reference in regard to being left or right of center. It would be useful to have some kind of indicator to help clue a “zoomed-in” operator on which direction the plus and minus control buttons will actually move the object.

6. When the scaling functions are used, the object selected will increase or decrease size on a particular axis on both sides of center. For carefully placed sub-objects, it would be useful to have a function that allows them to be locked at one end of the axis so that the scaling occurs only at the one, other end.

7. When using the very cool “lithoplane” function, which can render 2D patterns into 3D relief models, I get a “Boolean Processing, please wait …” alert when trying to “subtract” a shape object from it. This wait goes on … forever …and ends up freezing the software, forcing me to bump out of Morphi and clear my iPad memory / screen history to get the app to work again. It’s obviously some kind of processor- and memory-intensive function that exceeds the system resources of the iPad.

Despite the above improvements that could be made to the Morphi product, I still rate it as a FIVE-STAR app. For the $9.99 full-feature price, Morphi packs a huge amount of 3D CAD functionality, and with the massive convenience of working on a mobile device.
