## What is Motorfile?

Everything about the car you own, from a number plate.

Type your registration once. Motorfile reads the government's records and fills in the rest: make, model, year, fuel, engine, every MOT it has had and what is due.

CHECK ANY CAR, FREE, AS OFTEN AS YOU LIKE

Not just your own. Type any plate for the full MOT history, every mileage reading, every advisory, and the whole DVLA record: tax status and when it runs out, SORN, export marker, logbook date and CO2. It costs us nothing, so it costs you nothing.

WHAT THE TESTER ACTUALLY MEANT

MOT advisories are workshop shorthand. "Nearside front tyre worn close to the legal limit" means your front left tyre is nearly worn out, roughly 80 to 110 pounds to put right. Every one is translated and priced, a DANGEROUS defect is shown as such, and anything written down two years running is flagged as what will probably fail next.

WHAT TAX COSTS, AND CLEAN AIR ZONES

Twelve months, six months or monthly, from the DVLA's record and the published rates. It also works out whether the car is charged in a clean air zone, from the fuel and the registration date, and links to the official checker.

NOTHING RUNS OUT

MOT, tax, insurance and servicing on one timeline, soonest first. Reminders 30 days before, then 7, then 3.

WHERE TO GET IT DONE

Save the garage you use and the reminder names it. Or find every MOT station near you, from the DVSA's register.

WHAT PETROL AND DIESEL COST NEAR YOU

Live prices from the stations reporting to Fuel Finder, the government's scheme, cheapest first and only the grade your car takes. A postcode, never your location.

EVERY MILEAGE READING, EVER

Every MOT is a dated odometer reading, so the record goes back years. A line that dips is a clock wound back, and it says so.

WHAT IT COSTS TO RUN

Fuel, servicing, road tax and insurance, as real pence per mile from your receipts — and as one figure a month, the number that decides whether to keep the car.

CHARGING POINTS, FOR AN ELECTRIC CAR

Public chargers near a postcode: how fast in words as well as kilowatts, which plugs they take, who runs them, and Tesla by name. Say which plug your car uses and it shows only the ones that fit.

A FILE FOR THE BUYER

When you sell, hand over one page: MOT history, verified mileage, service records and any damage you declared. No address, no phone, no price.

KEEP THE PAPERWORK

Photograph the V5C, the certificate, the invoices. They stay on your phone and travel in your backup and iCloud copy.

BUILT FOR IPHONE AND IPAD

On iPad the menu sits down the side, with your cars and what is due beside each other. There is a home screen widget, and each car can have a nickname, so a reminder says "Nat's" not a plate.

WHAT MOTORFILE IS NOT

An MOT, mileage and tax check. It cannot show outstanding finance, stolen markers or write-offs: that comes from finance houses, the police and insurers, and Motorfile has none of it.

NO ACCOUNT, NO SERVER

Nothing to sign up to. Your records live on your phone. What reaches us is the plate, so the DVSA can answer, and a map point if you ask for prices. Never your name or postcode.

PLANS

Free: one vehicle, and everything above. Not a trial, nothing expires.

Household, 2.99 GBP a month or 24.99 GBP a year: five vehicles.

Fleet, 10.99 GBP a month: no limit on how many you keep.

A plan only changes how many cars you keep. Everything above is the same on all three.

Household and Fleet are auto-renewable subscriptions. Payment is charged to your Apple account at confirmation of purchase, and renews at the same price for the same length unless turned off at least 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel in your Apple account settings.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-12

ROAD TAX THAT ADMITS WHEN IT IS SHORT

A car that cost over £40,000 new pays £440 a year on top of the standard rate until it is six years old, and the DVLA record does not carry the price — so Motorfile now asks, on the screen showing the figure, instead of quoting the standard rate as though it were the whole bill. Answer once and the monthly figure corrects itself.

CHOOSING A CAR, WITH ALL OF THEM IN VIEW

The car picker could be covered by the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, which hid the last car in a long garage. Fixed everywhere a panel slides up, not just where it was spotted.

WHAT WE SAY ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY

The line on the You screen counted the things that leave your phone, and a count goes out of date every time the app learns to do something new. It now says the thing that actually matters and stays true: nothing that leaves could name you.

ALSO

- The breakdown bar under what a car costs is drawn only when there is more than one cost to divide.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-09-10

CHARGING POINTS, FOR AN ELECTRIC CAR

Type a postcode and see the public chargers around you: how fast each one is in plain words as well as kilowatts, which plugs it takes, who runs it and what it says it costs. Tesla Superchargers are in there by name, with a filter of their own.

Tell Motorfile which plug your car uses — in the car's own details — and it shows only the ones that fit. Britain's official chargepoint register was switched off in 2024, so this reads the free community register that replaced it, and every point says when somebody last confirmed it.

WHAT THIS CAR COSTS YOU A MONTH

Finance, insurance, road tax, fuel and servicing, added up into one figure. Most of it comes from bills you have already recorded, so a car with nothing but an MOT still gets a real answer, and anything that could not be worked out is named rather than guessed at.

A finance agreement that has already ended is not counted, and a balloon payment is never spread across the months.

EVERY FINANCE PAYMENT, SPLIT IN TWO

Tell Motorfile what you borrowed and it shows where each payment goes — so much off the car, so much interest — month by month, with the balance dropping on the day the money leaves your account. It works out a missing APR from the figures you do have.

It is a running balance and never a settlement figure. Only your lender can say what it would cost to clear the agreement today.

EASIER TO GET AT

Your paperwork is at the top of the car now, not two screens down, with a count on it. The camera comes first when you add a car. Every date on the Due screen can be booked or taxed from where it sits, and a garage can be booked six weeks out rather than two — which is what this app has always told you to do.

TAP A PETROL STATION OR A CHARGER

Both open properly now: every grade or plug, how far away it is, when the price was last confirmed, and directions that open in Maps or Waze.

ALSO

- The tab reads Charging, not Fuel, when the car is electric.
- Every petrol station within eight miles, sorted by price or distance, instead of the nearest six.
- Northern Ireland is told plainly that the fuel scheme is Great Britain only.
- The countdown bar shows two dates instead of "60 days out".
- A card, once, saying what arrived with an update.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-09

WHAT PETROL AND DIESEL COST NEAR YOU

Live prices from every filling station that reports to Fuel Finder, the
government's own scheme, where traders must publish a change within thirty
minutes. Cheapest first, and only the grade your car actually takes: no more
being shown the price of unleaded when you drive a diesel.

Type a postcode. Motorfile never asks for your location, and it is the same
postcode that finds nearby MOT stations and service centres — one setting,
which you can change or delete at any time under You. It is sent to a public
postcode lookup to find where it is, and never to us.

Prices that have gone stale say when they were last confirmed, and anything
that looks plainly wrong is not shown at all. The scheme is new and still in
beta, so check the sign before you fill up.

YOUR PHOTOS AND DOCUMENTS ARE IN THE BACKUP NOW

They were not before, and that mattered: a new phone brought your cars back
but not the picture of your V5C. They now travel with everything else, into
the backup file and into your own iCloud copy. Nothing of ours holds them, and
nothing ever will.

If your only copy was made by an older version, it does not contain them. Save
a fresh one when you get a moment.

THE MOT ADVISORIES FIT ON ONE SCREEN

They are grouped by how much trouble you are actually in: what will fail next
time, what is worth watching, and what the tester simply noted. Tap any of them
for the price, the tester's own words, the manual's wording and the button to
tick it off. A car with six advisories used to fill the page three times over.

TELL ME WHEN THERE IS AN UPDATE

A new version of an app does not always install itself, so a fix can sit there
for weeks without reaching you. Motorfile now checks once a day and says so,
plainly, with a button that takes you to the App Store. It never blocks you,
and "not now" about one version does not silence the next one.

WHICH DAY THE MONEY GOES OUT

Record the day of the month your finance, insurance and road tax are taken. The
29th, 30th and 31st are handled properly: in a month that does not have one, it
comes out on the last day, and the app says so rather than pretending.

ALSO
- A date logged just after midnight is filed under today, not yesterday.
- Replacing a car's photo can no longer lose the old one if the new one fails.
- The app icon is a little smaller in its tile, and no longer flat.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-08

Everything below is free, on every plan.

WILL IT BE CHARGED IN A CLEAN AIR ZONE?
Worked out from the fuel and the month your car was first registered — the same things London, Birmingham and Bristol use to decide. Motorfile tells you why, and links to the government's own checker.

WHAT THE NEXT MOT WILL PROBABLY FIND
Your last test's advisories in plain English with typical prices, and anything a tester has written down twice. Advised two years running is the strongest warning the record holds.

WHERE TO GET IT DONE
Save the garage you actually use, and the reminder names it. Or find every MOT station near you, from the DVSA's own published register, with a phone number for each.

WHAT YOUR TAX COSTS, NOT JUST WHEN IT IS DUE
Twelve months, six months or monthly, from the DVLA's record of your car and the published rates. Cars registered before April 2017 see the CO2 band that sets the bill.

WHAT THE CAR REALLY COSTS TO RUN
The figure now includes road tax and insurance, not just fuel and servicing. It was short by roughly half.

A HOME SCREEN WIDGET
Pick a car and see what is due on it without opening the app.

BUILT FOR IPAD
Motorfile now uses the whole screen, with the menu down the side instead of a phone's bar at the bottom.

ALSO
- A nickname for each car, so a reminder says "Nat's" rather than a registration.
- Say which day of the month your finance, insurance and road tax come out.
- The reminders card asks on the spot and names the date it will use.
- Text scales with the size set on your phone, with a Text size control of its own.
- "Erase everything" now really does erase everything, documents and photographs included, and you can delete the copy in your iCloud from inside the app.
- Holding a card to reorder your garage behaves itself: no text selecting under your finger, and putting one back down no longer opens the car.
- Rate, Help and Share at the foot of You.
