For example: using the Brewers Friend App vs Mr Malty. Both calculated with: -8/16/2014 age yeast -set to 1.080 OG -pitch in 5.25gal -Stir Plate Mr Malty will limit at growth rate telling you you need 1.75L starter to make the required 287 billion cells. This is a limitation and a flaw. If it showed you how many cells were being created like Brewers Friend does you would see that 1.35L starter would be almost dead on. Thats 40grams of DME you could be saving if your doing the standard 10g/100ml. For $1.99 its a good app, but if you want more precision and the ability be be more precise with your beer, go with the brewers friend yeast calculator. It also allows for step up calculations. ### 1/5 — Doesn't calculate properly *2014-08-12, version 6.0.0* Since the new update, it isn't calculating starter sizes properly. It's saying I need a 26L starter for 5 gallons of 1.054 wort. ### 2/5 — Revamped Does Not Equal Better *2014-08-10, version 6.0.0* The previous version was fine. Now the yeast viability parameters are on a separate page. Why? There’s plenty of white space on the “Calculate” page to support them AND the fermentation type. The yeast information on the “Additional Info” should include the optimum fermentation temp. And, at least on my copy, WLP001 is totally missing! ### 1/5 — Horrible Update - Don't buy until it's fixed. *2014-08-09, version 6.0.0* They took a great app and made it unusable. Need to pitch 8 vials of 1 day old yeast for a 1.055 beer??? Yeast info is nice addition, but it doesn't even include WLP001 (must be a really rare strain no one uses). How about vital stats like temp range, attenuation and flocculation?? Don't buy this until it's fixed. ### 2/5 — This update is kinda horrible... *2014-08-09* In terms of functionality, this update is really, really bad. The settings don't quite work right and seem to intermittently take effect on the calculations. The interface is awkward and confusing. The harvest date button seems to not work, but if you press on the actual text next to the button, it takes effect. This app is now just infested with bugs. Yuck. On the plus side, the additions of White Labs and Wyeast yeast strains and descriptions is really cool. They'd be even better stats if things like attenuation, optimal ferm temps, and other info was included. Also, the app also looks better, I suppose. For now, I'm going back to the website calculator. I'm sure these issues will be fixed, but at this moment, this app is totally useless for me. :( ### 1/5 — Used to be great... *2014-08-09* The interface is terribly buggy now, things have been buried where previously they were readily accessible. This, "revamp" is an unfortunate step backwards. Sadly I didn't back up so I've lost the old version and am stuck with this rather questionable version. I only hope that it'll be fixed soon. The old design was admittedly clunky and the icon peculiar to say the least but the app was imminently usable; now it's just painful to navigate. ### 3/5 — Bring the yeast type option back to the main screen *2014-08-08, version 6.0.0* I do not like the number of steps it takes to switch from liquid to dry. I'm all for supporting the time and research that went into developing this App, but as far as Apps go, this IS a Pricey one. I agree with some of the other reviews, more content would ease the pain of this purchase. ### 1/5 — Not Worth It *2013-10-31, version 5* Can I get a refund? This app is way too basic for $5. I understand you use it to keep the bare bones website running, but this is awful. I had no idea how useless this app would be. ### 3/5 — Handy But Needs More Value *2013-05-11, version 5* Works exactly like the online version but how it's worth $5 is beyond me....maybe if it had more value like say a multi stage starter mode. I'm not pitching 6 packs of old yeast, I would always do stages in that case... ### 2/5 — Not Currently Worth the Price *2012-12-18, version 5* It does the same thing as the free on-line calculator, but it looks like someone's first iOS application. Not a professional job, and not worth the $5 price being charged. It needs more work. ### 4/5 — Worth it *2012-11-11* No, it's not the slickest interface and you can always use the free tool online, but it's still worth the cost. I prefer this calculator to others I've used like BeerAlchemy. Jamil's been a huge help to me in my brewing and he literally wrote the book on yeast. I don't mind tossing $5 his way for this very useful tool. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Doesn’t work *2021-07-27* Can’t change starting gravity or volume. It was a great app contributed by Jamil, when there were few alternatives to doing it by hand. Fortunately, there are lots of other tools now available. I’ve been using the desktop version that requires Abode Flash since it was developed. I find it works great, been using on my iPhone for years. I found it very easy to navigate the new look and was able to get the same number from both the app and the website which makes me trust it even more. Get it, and use it to ensure you are utilizing correct pitching rates (you may be surprised at how much you're under-pitching).
