Mātai Moana

Positioned at the northern summit of Te Motu Kairangi (Miramar peninsula), Matai Moana (Mt. Crawford) and the surrounding area encompasses diverse and valuable histories: among these include Iwi sites of heritage; sites of early Pakeha settlements; military emplacements; the abandoned Mount Crawford Prisons, and; the Massey Memorial — as well as the oldest continuously operating farm in Wellington. However, its future is threatened by neglect, environmental degradation, and pressure for housing development. Te Motu Kairangi and Matai Moana are prominent features of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), greeting visitors of our city by air or by sea while being visible from most places in the city. Thus saving, protecting and restoring the natural features, historic sites, and native birds and other wildlife that reside there is therefore important to all Wellingtonians.
