## What is MuniMobile?

The official mobile ticketing app from San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency! The MuniMobile app lets you purchase and use fares and passes instantly on your phone—anywhere, anytime. Just download the free app, create an account and you're ready to go.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS APP:
• No paper fares to keep track of.
• No need to carry cash, count exact change, or find a ticket machine.
• Buy and use fares using a debit/credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay
• Store multiple tickets on your phone for future use.
• Pay a single fare or multiple fares for a group of riders.
• Register your debit/credit card(s) in our secure system.

HOW IT WORKS:
1. CHOOSE RIDER TYPE: Adult, Senior/Disabled/Medicare, Youth, or SF Access
2. CHOOSE FARE: Single Trip Fare for Muni Bus & Rail, Single Ride Fare for Cable Car, or Passports
3. CHOOSE QUANTITY: You can buy multiple tickets to use later
4. CHECK OUT: Pay with debit/credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay

COMMON QUESTIONS:
Q: Do I need to be connected to the Internet?
A cellular network or a wireless Internet connection is required to purchase tickets, but you can use/activate your tickets offline.

Q: What if my battery dies?
Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times, so be sure to plan ahead!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
 • Don't uninstall the MuniMobile app or erase your phone without transferring your unused tickets first. Your tickets are stored on your phone (which makes it possible to use them without a cellular network or a wireless Internet connection). Activate your ticket before boarding.
• In the subway, activate (“use”) your purchased mobile ticket before passing through metro station fare gates. Show your active ticket to the station agent, and pass through the fare gate closest to the station agent booth. If the station agent is not present, you may still pass through the gate as long as your ticket has been activated. Do not attempt to “tag” the gate.
• On the surface, use your purchased mobile ticket before boarding the vehicle. You may board through any door. If you feel more comfortable boarding through the front door to show your ticket to the transit operator, please feel free to do so.
• For Cable Car, use your purchased mobile ticket once you are on board the vehicle. Show your mobile ticket to the Cable Car conductor.
• Watch your battery level! Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times.
• Create an account before purchasing tickets, as this is the only way you can transfer your unused tickets if you get a new phone. (Note: Only unused tickets can be transferred. Use up any activated tickets before switching phones.)

### 1/5 — Worst app experience

*2023-04-20*

I thought it was just me. Relieved to read numerous other reviews stating that this app fails to load properly. OMG!!! It is so true. I have tried deleting and reloading the app, turned on off cell phone, reset Wi-Fi and cellular signals and NOTHING. Just the city line and Muni bus scrolling across the screen endlessly. Never mind all the other issues people have listed. I just want to buy my ticket, pay and be on my way, but no-the app will not load. The bus is coming !!! I have to get to work and so I board and risk getting a ticket. For the next 30 minutes as a ride I am frantically trying to open the app. Does anyone at SF MUNI read its app reviews? For over a half year, riders have shared similar experiences. Someone should be fired for allowing such a terrible SF Muni experience to continue to impact and hurt commuters heavily dependent on technology to move through a complex city like San Francisco.

### 1/5 — App didn’t work

*2023-02-09, version 3.20.7899*

Got the app , bought a day pass for me and my daughter to take the cable train from Powell to fisherman’s wharf and it only worked to buy the tickets after that it just kept asking me to delete the appt and reestablish it back. Did that a couple times and nothing had to buy the cable train ticket again for me and my daughter, I’m not a gold mine, and when I told the supervisor about the app he just said and I quote “well, app don’t work, u have to pay I guess.”

I told him, I bought an all day service ticket and I expect the service to work and an app that’s reliable.

### 1/5 — They ruined it

*2022-12-08, version 3.20.7899*

Imagine my horror when I opened the app today to check when my bus would arrive and found that they’ve RUINED the app. Why change something that worked, and make it nearly unusable? Instead of 3 taps to find a route and arrival time it now takes minimum 7! Typical city employees, you probably paid some big tech company too much money for this too!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work on cellular

*2022-12-08, version 3.20.7899*

I received a $125 ticket because this app doesn’t open when on cellular most of the time. I purchased several tickets in advance and couldn’t launch the app when on the bus. Muni officer wouldn’t wait for the app to get signal and launch and wrote me a ticket. So muni got my fare and SFMTA got $125.

This is also an issue reported by several users for a long time now and SFMTA doesn’t fix it. Not surprising as it probably is bringing in more money than if the app actually worked.

### 3/5 — Very slow to open

*2022-12-03, version 3.20.7899*

Great App for Muni payment, love using it, however, it’s been too many times where I try to open to pay before I get on and it takes several minutes for the app to fully open, it just stays on the muni bus moving, even after restarting the app.

Hope it gets fixed cause it’s a great app and very useful when you don’t have your clipper on you.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work when you need it

*2022-11-06, version 3.20.7899*

App doesn’t load tickets. Just keeps spinning. Even with four bars of cellular service and all other apps working, this app won’t load. Rebooted phone, reinstalled app, didn’t work. Also visitor 1-3 day passport passes only works on Metro IF there is a a Muni staff at the kiosk in the station because they have to manually view your phone to open the turnstile. Doesn’t work if no one is there which is what we found and doesn’t work if you can’t open the app to show them your visitor passport.

### 1/5 — App stuck on loading screen

*2022-10-06, version 3.20.7899*

The app was fairly simple and convenient to use. About a week ago the app would get stuck in the loading page and after a few minutes I get an error saying “unable to access the app” I have deleted and reinstalled app a few times. I might have fares prepaid for in the app I can no longer access. This is a terrible user experience

### 3/5 — When the app is working

*2022-09-17, version 3.20.7899*

It’s fine and easy to buy tickets. But some days the load times until the app opens it takes forever if it opens at all. I already deleted and reinstalled the App but nothing improved…

### 3/5 — How to get through red loading screen

*2022-09-09, version 3.20.7899*

I had the same problem where the app wouldn’t load. In my case, I turned off my data while I had the app open and then the app menu would display. Once that happened, I turned my data back on and app worked as usual.

Hope they fix this soon!

### 5/5 — best option for travelling SF

*2022-09-07, version 3.20.7899*

We host many Airbnb clients, and they all find this the absolute best way to get around town. So much easier than the clipper card and $5 for a day pass is an absolute steal! It’s also super intuitive and very simple to use. I love this app!

## Frequently asked questions about MuniMobile

### How do I purchase fares with MuniMobile?

To purchase fares, you first choose your rider type (Adult, Senior, Youth, etc.), then select the fare type (Single Trip, Passport), specify the quantity, and finally check out using a debit/credit card, PayPal, or Apple Pay. You can also register your cards for secure storage and faster future purchases.

### Can I use MuniMobile without an internet connection?

A cellular network or wireless internet connection is required to purchase tickets. However, once purchased, your tickets can be used and activated offline, meaning you do not need an internet connection to present your fare when boarding.

### What happens if my phone battery dies?

Similar to paper tickets, users are responsible for ensuring they have a valid fare at all times. It is important to monitor your phone's battery level and plan ahead to avoid issues. If your battery dies, you may be subject to fare enforcement.

### How do I transfer my tickets to a new phone?

To transfer unused tickets to a new phone, you must create an account within the MuniMobile app before purchasing tickets. Your tickets are stored on your phone, and an account is the only way to transfer them. Ensure you transfer only unused tickets before switching devices.

### How do I use my mobile ticket on Muni?

For subway use, activate your mobile ticket before passing through fare gates and show it to the station agent. On surface vehicles, activate your ticket before boarding. For Cable Cars, activate your ticket once on board and show it to the conductor.
