### 3/5 — Very slow to open

*2022-12-03, version 3.20.7899*

Great App for Muni payment, love using it, however, it’s been too many times where I try to open to pay before I get on and it takes several minutes for the app to fully open, it just stays on the muni bus moving, even after restarting the app.

Hope it gets fixed cause it’s a great app and very useful when you don’t have your clipper on you.

### 3/5 — When the app is working

*2022-09-17, version 3.20.7899*

It’s fine and easy to buy tickets. But some days the load times until the app opens it takes forever if it opens at all. I already deleted and reinstalled the App but nothing improved…

### 3/5 — How to get through red loading screen

*2022-09-09, version 3.20.7899*

I had the same problem where the app wouldn’t load. In my case, I turned off my data while I had the app open and then the app menu would display. Once that happened, I turned my data back on and app worked as usual.

Hope they fix this soon!

### 2/5 — Wish it was better

*2022-07-07, version 3.20.7899*

The app is great…when it’s working. I like being able to pre-purchase several one-day passes and activating it quickly when needed. But lately, the app has not been loading. It’ll stay in that red, animated intro page forever and never load. That’s frustrating when I see my train/bus is coming and I can’t get thru the gate. I’ve waited over 3 minutes and it’ll just never load. I checked for updates, and restarted the app. Maybe it’s time to delete and reload the app??

I also didn’t like that passes expire. Right before the COVID shutdowns, I had 9 one-day passes purchased (since I use it almost daily). That’s $45. When we went back to the office, I realized all my passes were gone! Apparently they all expired. That seems wrong.

Lastly, the transaction history is not helpful. I would like to see dates of pass purchases and dates of usage.

I’ve started using the clipper card in my Apple wallet instead but I can’t buy day passes that way. 🙁

As an SF native, I’ve been using muni my whole life. Wish things would work better.

### 3/5 — Better UI Needed

*2022-06-20, version 3.20.7899*

I’m being generous in giving 3 stars because the app does nothing now but scroll the start up screen. The cute visual of the bus and city. I’m rating it 3 despite it being 100% worthless right now because when it does work, it’s easy to use for different types of tickets, and gives me NextBus information. One thing that is incredibly annoying at all times is that I have to scroll through and choose which app I want arrival times for. Hello? I’m using the Muni app. Which agency do you THINK my inquiry is about. Should default to Muni on the Muni. All in all, the functionality of the arrivals times is poor. It takes too long to find your route and direction. And for locations like the metro stations, when you look up one route & direction, it should give you the times of the other routes going that direction from the same stop. Please fix the app, and make the UI better. Seriously, Muni is practically up the street from Silicon Valley and this is the best they could come up with?

### 2/5 — Really needs to better explain what lines the app doesn’t service

*2022-06-18, version 3.20.7899*

App is conveniently designed and has good functionality, but really needs to do a better job of explaining what bus lines specifically are NOT usable with Muni. For someone who’s never been here and is coming from other cities/states where a single app gets you onto any bus in town, it’s extremely irritating (and a massive waste of time) to wait half an hour for a bus only to find out it uses a completely different service.

### 4/5 — MuniMobile app

*2020-02-08, version 3.7.4941*

From an SF local: The MuniMobile app is the best thing since sliced bread. No more having to find a store nearby to get change. And the app even works on an old iPhone 4S albeit somewhat slow, but it works.

Update: The newer version no longer supports iOS 9 on iPhone 4S, so one must use at least iOS 10 on iPhone 5.

### 1/5 — Takes forever to open and unreliable purchases

*2019-12-13, version 3.13.6410*

I use this app daily and never write reviews. This app however is driving me insane, I live 2 blocks from underground Muni station and if I don’t open the app as soon as I leave my apartment it won’t have gotten past the startup screen. No joke, it can take over a couple of minutes to open sometimes. Even with solid wifi it can take long, say 30 seconds.

Literally all I care about is time to ticket, it’s frustrating to wait in front of the gates to load this app.

Aside from that, whenever I purchase tickets it gives me some random amount of tickets instead of the amount I ordered. Say I buy 10 tickets again, I end up with 37 for instance.

Literally the only 2 features I care about to work reliably don’t work. Please fix this!

### 1/5 — Beware!

*2019-10-26, version 3.12.5515*

I purchased 4 tickets through the app and none of them regustered but the charge went through. I purchased another 4, thinking maybe it would catch thr glitch. But no, it charged me again and still did not show in the app. I called and was told they couldn’t help because tech was not in and was closed. Beware of this issue and customer service lacking in assistance with this problem. But they have no issue taking your money.

### 1/5 — BEWARE - High risk of fines with this app

*2019-08-21, version 3.12.5515*

This app is horrible and easily resulted in a $125 ticket. It works fundamentally different from all other forms of payment and muni fare enforcers have not updated their practices for it. In a part of town where stops are one block apart, enforcers stepped on one block after I stepped on and activated a ticket. It takes a bit to open the app and do that. They said the activation time was too recent. I said I just got on. They said everyone says that, you were supposed to activate before you go on, were totally unsympathetic and wrote me a fat ticket.

The problem is EVERY other form of muni payment happens on the bus. Why is this different? It’s totally unintuitive. How many people read the fine print and remember to activate in advance? How many times have you ran to catch a bus and just made it? This is a classic case of “blaming the user” for a bad user experience. Why can’t we just TAP TO PAY with this app like other modern cities? Stay away from this app.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Worst app experience

*2023-04-20*

I thought it was just me. Relieved to read numerous other reviews stating that this app fails to load properly. OMG!!! It is so true. I have tried deleting and reloading the app, turned on off cell phone, reset Wi-Fi and cellular signals and NOTHING. Just the city line and Muni bus scrolling across the screen endlessly. Never mind all the other issues people have listed. I just want to buy my ticket, pay and be on my way, but no-the app will not load. The bus is coming !!! I have to get to work and so I board and risk getting a ticket. For the next 30 minutes as a ride I am frantically trying to open the app. Does anyone at SF MUNI read its app reviews? For over a half year, riders have shared similar experiences. Someone should be fired for allowing such a terrible SF Muni experience to continue to impact and hurt commuters heavily dependent on technology to move through a complex city like San Francisco.

### 1/5 — App didn’t work

*2023-02-09, version 3.20.7899*

Got the app , bought a day pass for me and my daughter to take the cable train from Powell to fisherman’s wharf and it only worked to buy the tickets after that it just kept asking me to delete the appt and reestablish it back. Did that a couple times and nothing had to buy the cable train ticket again for me and my daughter, I’m not a gold mine, and when I told the supervisor about the app he just said and I quote “well, app don’t work, u have to pay I guess.”

I told him, I bought an all day service ticket and I expect the service to work and an app that’s reliable.

### 1/5 — They ruined it

*2022-12-08, version 3.20.7899*

Imagine my horror when I opened the app today to check when my bus would arrive and found that they’ve RUINED the app. Why change something that worked, and make it nearly unusable? Instead of 3 taps to find a route and arrival time it now takes minimum 7! Typical city employees, you probably paid some big tech company too much money for this too!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work on cellular

*2022-12-08, version 3.20.7899*

I received a $125 ticket because this app doesn’t open when on cellular most of the time. I purchased several tickets in advance and couldn’t launch the app when on the bus. Muni officer wouldn’t wait for the app to get signal and launch and wrote me a ticket. So muni got my fare and SFMTA got $125.

This is also an issue reported by several users for a long time now and SFMTA doesn’t fix it. Not surprising as it probably is bringing in more money than if the app actually worked.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work when you need it

*2022-11-06, version 3.20.7899*

App doesn’t load tickets. Just keeps spinning. Even with four bars of cellular service and all other apps working, this app won’t load. Rebooted phone, reinstalled app, didn’t work. Also visitor 1-3 day passport passes only works on Metro IF there is a a Muni staff at the kiosk in the station because they have to manually view your phone to open the turnstile. Doesn’t work if no one is there which is what we found and doesn’t work if you can’t open the app to show them your visitor passport.

### 1/5 — App stuck on loading screen

*2022-10-06, version 3.20.7899*

The app was fairly simple and convenient to use. About a week ago the app would get stuck in the loading page and after a few minutes I get an error saying “unable to access the app” I have deleted and reinstalled app a few times. I might have fares prepaid for in the app I can no longer access. This is a terrible user experience

### 1/5 — App is garbage

*2022-07-15, version 3.20.7899*

This app is complete garbage. It only opens and runs sometimes. As a tourist visiting SF, it did not work the entire day for myself or my wife. We had to buy 1 day passports in person. This costs double ($24) so I’m not surprised that there isn’t an effort to fix this. Silicon Valley is within view and yet they can’t manage to make a functional app. Look at the other reviews-clearly I’m not the only one that had this issue.

### 1/5 — Route planning is useless

*2021-03-27, version 3.16.7374*

The “route planner” just forwards you to google maps. Google maps, in its infinite wisdom, suggests routes that aren’t even active or picking up passengers that day. For example, I need to get from Nob hill to the marina. It suggested I take a Golden Gate transit bus. Problem is, Golden Gate transit doesn’t pick up passengers in San Francisco proper — only at the transit terminals at the end of the line. I didn’t know this, tried to board a bus mid-route, and got kicked off. Wound up walking four miles because google maps simply wouldn’t load active MUNI routes.

It’s 2021, we’re the tech center of the world. Get it together, developers.

### 1/5 — Avoid using at night time

*2020-06-28, version 3.15.7161*

Local riders are aware of the “late night special” when riding muni at night. Any fare paid for after 830pm do not have the normal 2 hour expiration time and are valid to use until 5am of the next day. Before the recent update the app applied the late night special to your tickets used after 830pm. After the recent update your tickets used after 830pm expire in 2 hours.
Your better off paying an extra 25cents to get a paper transfer or use your clipper card because the late special still works with those forms of payment.
I also find it kind of disingenuous that it’s not mentioned in the update description or anywhere else on the app. If it’s a bug or something I’ll gladly change my rating of the app but I’ve tried to contact the developers and Sfmta to ask about this in a few emails and follow ups but still haven’t heard back

### 1/5 — Beware of Ticket People

*2020-03-08, version 3.13.6722*

I came super close to getting a ticket after deciding to use this as an alternative to Clipper. The people who ask for proof of payment don’t have an easy way of telling whether you activated the tickets last minute or not, or they are not properly trained to do so. I was able to show them when I activated it, but it wasn’t until after I got removed from the train that they decided to listen to me. I got the whole, “Oh, we’re sorry for the inconvenience” thing. I know it’s not entirely the app’s fault, but it something like this is going to be effective, there needs to be more communication with the enforcers. Pretty lame experience overall.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — best option for travelling SF

*2022-09-07, version 3.20.7899*

We host many Airbnb clients, and they all find this the absolute best way to get around town. So much easier than the clipper card and $5 for a day pass is an absolute steal! It’s also super intuitive and very simple to use. I love this app!

### 5/5 — Great deal for visiting

*2022-06-20, version 3.20.7899*

The $5 daily pass is fantastic and once set up, the app worked great. Sometimes it was confusing how/when to scan the barcode but I stopped worrying about that, knowing that I had paid, even if most buses had no way to scan.

### 5/5 — Not working

*2022-06-17, version 3.20.7899*

Need to correct issue about being able to access without WiFi. Without WiFi app doesn’t open.

### 5/5 — Trip should remain visible when coming back from Maps

*2021-07-23, version 3.18.7569*

If I enter a trip in Plan Trip and it takes me to Google Maps, when Inreturn from maps the trip is gone. If I forgot to pin it in maps I have to start all over again.
The trip should remain in the Muni app. Instead, I get a blank screen and it says "Done" in upper left.

Thanks.

### 5/5 — Slow

*2020-10-02, version 3.15.7161*

A little non-intuitive, but easy enough once you get used to it. However, Muni Mobile is easily the slowest to load of any app on my iPhone. Not a good feature for a bus payment app.

### 5/5 — Great customer support and essential for transportation around town.

*2019-12-12, version 3.13.6410*

I bought a 3 day pass for $29 and used the Muni system all over town. If you buy it, use it for even short distances to save your feet, very practical. They also have a great customer support. I bought a second pass by mistake, I contacted them through email and they quickly replied that they would refund me for the mistaken second pass. I got the refund before leaving town. Thank you, Muni!!

### 5/5 — Absolutely gorgeous UI/UX

*2019-08-19, version 3.12.5515*

This may be one of the most refined and stunning user experiences I have seen in a mobile application. Finally, something that reflects the ingenuity and capability of San Francisco technology-wise comes to the SFMTA's hands. The Moovel team should be writing the handbooks and guidelines for what an immaculate user interface and experience looks like. Superb job!

### 5/5 — Thanks....

*2019-08-14, version 3.12.5515*

This app makes it easy for me to travel between my home and the doctors office I don’t have to carry any cash which is a plus for me because I usually end up giving it away before I’m able to ride another bus. So thank you for making this up and I hope you make it more efficient down the line thank you. One suggestion would be to make it like a rideshare app where you can see when and where the bus is at in route and pinpoint the rider.

Thank you
Jason A Coffman Sr.

### 5/5 — Invaluable functionality, so-so app.

*2019-08-10, version 3.12.5515*

This is a fantastic app because it is very convenient to be able to get on the bus without carrying around a Clipper card or cash.

But this is a mediocre app because it does not launch reliably.

For all these gripes, I use it regularly and would recommend it if you prefer not to carry cash and cards around.

### 5/5 — Finally!!

*2019-07-30, version 3.12.5515*

Finally! someone made an app for people like me, who are constantly loosing their clipper card! My friend told me about this app and it’s supper convenient and user-friendly. So far I have not had any problems with the app. It is nice the tickets have a long life so I do not feel rushed to use them immediately.
