## What is Murmur?

Murmur allows voice calls between groups of Bluetooth LE capable devices.

Multiple connections between devices create a mesh network, allowing group voice calling and messages for up to 16 participants.

The network allows signals to be relayed between devices, allowing the range to far exceed that of a single Bluetooth connection when used in a group.

Murmur supports Bluetooth hands-free kits, making it ideal for cyclists, skiers, climbers, hikers or any group activity taking place without reliable cell-tower reception.

## Key features

### 3/5 — Unstable Connection

*2025-08-28*

Update: Iphone 14 pro max, IOS 18.6.2, SUOOKC headset from Amazon for both.

My gf and I are on the same motorcycle. After some time, the circles get further away from each other and the call drops intermittently. It will regain but seems very unpredictable. I paid for the full version on both phones because I like the idea and I hope this gets fixed

**Developer response:** Many thanks for the feedback - I'll try to understand what's happening, hopefully it can be fixed. Could I ask the model of the phones you're using and the versions of iOS running on them? Also if you're using wireless headphones - the model of the headphones you're using would be useful too (wired headphones do tend to work better - if this is an option for you).
UPDATE: Version 2025.9.19 is now available and has some significant improvements in the stability of connections. If you get the chance to try it, try enabling the experimental Lyra codec too in settings - it should sound better).

### 5/5 — A brilliantly executed mesh audio tool!

*2025-05-27*

Murmur is an incredibly well-designed app that does something most people don’t realize is possible: real-time group audio over Bluetooth mesh, with no internet or centralized infrastructure. The implementation is rock solid—audio stays clear, latency is impressively low, and the mesh routing actually extends range in a meaningful way. I’ve used it on hikes with friends spread out along the trail, and it just works. It’s the kind of tool that feels both technically elegant and genuinely useful. I’m glad this exists—it fills a real gap in offline communication.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the positive review! Really pleased it's working well for you.

### 3/5 — Good for motorcycle-ish

*2025-02-23*

Used this with passenger on motorcycle. When it works it’s really nice and a cheap alternative to cardo.

But:
Trying to play music just completely stops the call. Also overtime it creates its own feedback loop then loses connection with passengers phone it seems like it’s real easy to pick up on 2.4ghz/bluetooth interference at one point I was hearing audio from some device that wasn’t either of our phones it sounded like really really muffled radio music. It’d be nice to have a more secure channel that didn’t have that issue. It’s really hard to mess around with and restart the app on both phones while riding a motorcycle so we ended up just not being able to talk for the last 30 min of our ride.

Please add:
-Auto Healing connection so you don’t have to try and fix it while doing your activity

-maybe channel hopping? I know some LE voice systems will automatically switch around to whatever channel has the least interference. That would be really nice.

**Developer response:** Many thanks for the feedback, I've made some improvements in the latest release, if you're able to try it I'd be very interested to know if it fixed the problems you had - I think I spotted something that could have created the feedback loop you described.

Please make sure 'Mute Background Apps' is off in the settings if you want to mix the call with music - otherwise it won't share the audio route.

The app is secure - all connections are encrypted and signed so it would not play audio from another source (or would another device be able to pick up your call without your password). Perhaps you had a radio app playing in the background? Mixing audio does lower the volume to avoid clipping.

Bluetooth LE actually requires channel hopping, so Murmur does this already. It should also auto heal if you give it time. If the app is backgrounded on both phones it may be slow though - this is an iOS limitation unfortunately.

Thanks again, and I hope you see an improvement in the latest version.

### 4/5 — ok overall.

*2025-01-05*

Ok for an app with nothing else like it. Basic functions work but cannot set passwords.

**Developer response:** Many thanks for reporting the password regression. This has now been fixed in v2025.1.11.

### 3/5 — Solid app can’t disable jokes

*2024-10-16*

I like the app and what it does but I can’t purchase the disable jokes option. iOS 18 on each device and so far can’t purchase on any of the 4 iPhones and 2 iPads. Help! Take my money please

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback - I've updated some of the purchasing logic, and am hopeful it may have resolved your issue - if you have a chance, could you try v2025.1.5?

### 5/5 — Works great!

*2024-06-14*

The only improvement I can imagine would be to allow music at the same time if possible

**Developer response:** UPDATE: Version 2024.7.8 now makes muting background apps optional. If you're using wireless headphones - music won't sound great (using the microphone with the Hands Free Profile forces a lower sampling rate and mono), but it'll be fine for navigation voice prompts. Wired headphones and speaker don't have this issue.

### 1/5 — Not compatible with our Bluetooth headphones

*2024-06-03, version 2024.5.26*

On our iPhones and AirPods Pro it glitches constantly. The Bluetooth functions seem to compete with each other and disconnect everything. Shame, it sounded like a useful app for cycling.

### 4/5 — App works great with a few bugs

*2024-05-25*

This app is awesome for communicating over short range; like biking or driving in separate cars for road trips with no cell service. It struggles beyond 150 feet or so with direct line of sight or about 70 feet with obstacles / walls.

The main “bugs” we found: The app would not find the other user (group) with anything but short group names and no password. When we used a longer group name and/or one with a password the phones never found each other.

**Developer response:** Many thanks for helpful feedback - those certainly sound like bugs! I'll take a look at what's causing that and hopefully have them fixed this week.
UPDATE: Version 2024.6.7 should hopefully fix the short group name/password issue you identified. Many thanks for letting me know - a regression in the UI framework Murmur uses had disabled the input filtering I'd not spotted. Do let me know if this isn't resolved.

### 5/5 — Great family app

*2024-05-22, version 2024.5.17*

Worked well for our family group on a campsite with no phone signal
