### 2/5 — Great device, frustrating app

*2026-08-31, version 55.0*

I’ve only had the Muse headband for a short time, but I’m really enjoying the technology and can see myself using it a lot. Unfortunately, the app has some really frustrating basic omissions.
There’s no search function and no way to favourite/save sessions. This makes it unnecessarily difficult to find sessions you’ve enjoyed or want to repeat. The session history is just one long list, which will become a nightmare as it grows. I was even told by the AI to keep my own index of sessions — surely the app should be doing this!
Please add basic navigation tools like search, favourites, categories or filters.
Also, I’m earning “birds” at the end of sessions but often don’t actually hear birds during the meditation. I’m not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to work.
The headband is great, but the app needs some serious attention to usability.

### 2/5 — Fragile, junk hardware

*2026-07-04, version 54.1*

bloated and gamified software. edit: i didn't say it felt fragile, IT IS fragile. i threw it away like the garbage that it is.

### 2/5 — Fragile, junk hardware

*2026-06-27, version 54.1*

bloated and gamified software.

### 2/5 — Good app when it works

*2026-05-17, version 53.0*

The app and experience are good when it works but it is buggy and the support seems limited. Muse recently put out a firmware update that is required in order to use the device. However the app won’t download the firmware update and just provides an ambiguous error. There is no FAQ nor a response to a support request so it has effectively been useless for the last two weeks. Future firmware updates shouldn’t be required to use the device. If they are required for some reason then it would be great to have an announcement and support so that people can resolve issues.

### 1/5 — Not Great for Non-Subscribers

*2026-03-06, version 51.1*

Review: 03/2026: I caved and got a subscription. It’s been very frustrating. The AI is very generic and constantly misunderstands what I’m asking for or forgets instructions. It’s as smart as SIRI and not worth the extra cost. As for peak Alpha, I fail to see how it’s helpful and hasn’t impacted my mediation practice.

Review 07/2025: Been using muse since 2015. Have recently gotten frustrated with the amount of content being locked behind a paywall. I understand and respect companies want folks to sign up for paid services, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of non paying member who’ve already spent $300+ on hardware. The app itself used to be simple and intuitive. And now, I can’t find unguided, set-your-own-time meditations that I can do without my headband. The free features should be easier to find than they currently are.

### 1/5 — App is glitchy and clunky

*2026-03-01, version 51.1*

The app is glitchy and never tracks it’s a waste of money right now. It used to work fine but now the app is a failure.

### 1/5 — Worst app and device scam

*2026-02-19, version 51.0*

This is worst device an app is extremely disappointing. When device is working it just doesn’t recognize. I tested it on android. It just works fine whereas my iphone is brand new and there it just doesn’t work so frustrating and it’s results are also not reliable when my mind is not calm and energy showing it is 80% above 80% calm and when my mind is really calm and it does show my brain activities is super calm. I really do not trust the results and I do not recommend this device.

### 1/5 — Session volume controls are gone now

*2026-02-15, version 51.0*

For years there was an icon to the left of the pause play during sessions which allowed the volume of the birds, background, end chime, narrator, etc. to be modified. Now there is no way to customize the volume during unguided biofeedback.

### 1/5 — Unethical Company

*2026-02-15, version 51.0*

I have been a longtime muse user. I purchased the very first Muse, then Muse 2, and finally Muse S. I even bought some Muse 2 products as gifts. However, I don’t understand why my Muse S is no longer supported and you want me to purchase the newer model after spending thousands of dollars with your company. It’s a terrible customer experience and I can no longer support such unethical behavior. I guess money is more important to you.

### 1/5 — Lazy Product Design

*2026-02-14, version 51.0*

1) For some reason, no data is stored locally, meaning your phone has to be plugged in, charged, and running the app the entire time or the entire night’s data will be lost

2) The App itself will just spontaneously close mid-sleep! 😂 and boom, you have no data

3) The battery for the device lasts barely longer than a night’s sleep

4) After several sessions, the $0.20 clip they use becomes unable to secure a tight fit

5) The App talking to Apple Health also works just 85% of the time

6) When the synch fails, they don’t give a way to force a resynch! Wonderful!

7) The App’s layout and UI is one of the most poorly-designed and confusing layouts of any health app I’ve ever used

Overall, Muse gives the perception of a company that makes so much money from marketing that they don’t care about product quality— both in the app and required devices— and that’s extremely frustrating on the consumer end.

### 1/5 — Paywall - highly limited without expensive subscription

*2026-02-12, version 51.0*

Sleep stage data is highly suspect with many nights indicating no deep sleep - zero. This does not match data from Apple Watch Ultra nor other EEG trackers used in the past. Most features behind paywall which for a $475 headset is ridiculous. Can’t recommend this product to anyone.

Highly geared towards meditation vs sleep. While meditation is nice to have, sleep is instrumental for health so surprised by lack of basic functionality to track sleep stats. The app does not sync data to Apple Health - despite indications it should.

### 1/5 — Extremely Lazy Product Design

*2026-02-03, version 50.2*

You have to kind’ve meet both the device and app halfway..

If you are in the window to return your Muse S, maybe this’ll convince you:

### 1/5 — Unnecessarily complex

*2026-01-24, version 50.2*

The Muse headband makes a lot of sense but the app is not intuitive and unnecessarily complicated. I wanted an adjunct to my meditation practice and I love gadgets so my husband gave me this for Christmas. (It’s been on my Amazon list for a couple of years.) I suppose I’ll develop my own work around version to use their app for my own use and just ignore the many features that serve, imo, to just complicate what could and should be a straightforward assistant to an ancient practice. If I didn’t already own it, I wouldn’t bother with it.

### 1/5 — $500 junk

*2026-01-22, version 50.2*

I’m honestly sick about this purchase. Cannot get a signal to do the exercises. Unable to reach customer support. Please help - I need a refund.

### 1/5 — Core sleep tracking unreliable on iOS + account lock-in issue

*2026-01-17, version 50.2*

1 purchased the Muse S Athena specifically for EEG-based sleep tracking, which is the product's main advertised feature.
On iOS, overnight sessions repeatedly disconnect, even with the app open and the device properly paired. This makes EEG sleep tracking unreliable and defeats the primary purpose of the device. There is no clear pre-purchase disclosure that iOS background behavior prevents stable overnight tracking.
1 attempted to work around this by using an Android device, only to discover that accounts created with Apple ID are permanently locked and cannot be migrated. My paid premium subscription became inaccessible on Android, and support refused to resolve this.
This is a serious combination of:
• Unreliable core functionality on ioS
• No cross-platform account portability
• No meaningful support resolution
If you are buying this for sleep EEG tracking, be aware that iOS reliability and account portability are major unresolved issues.

### 1/5 — Valued customer?

*2026-01-08, version 50.2*

I have been a Muse user since 2015 and currently own a Muse S. I was recently informed that this device is no longer supported and was advised to purchase a newer model. I was also told that my Muse S would continue to work with the new app—however, after the recent update, my Muse S no longer functions properly.

I find this extremely disappointing. I have been a loyal Muse customer for nearly a decade, and the only solution offered to me is to “buy another one.” That does not feel like support—it feels like being dismissed.

Over the years, I have owned the Muse 1, Muse 2, and Muse S. I even purchased a Muse device for my son when he went away to college to help manage his anxiety, and it was genuinely beneficial for him. Between hardware purchases, I have spent over $1,300, and between my son’s and my own subscriptions, I have paid more than $2,400 in subscription fees over the past 15 years.

I used to enthusiastically recommend Muse to others. Unfortunately, I no longer can. It appears that instead of supporting existing customers and older hardware, the expectation is simply to spend another $500–$600 to continue using a product we already invested heavily in. For many of us, that is not affordable—especially when there is no confidence that the newest device won’t be abandoned in a few years as well.

Why would I invest in the latest model when customer loyalty seems to hold so little value? I truly expected better from a company I have supported for so long.

I hope Muse will reconsider how it treats long-time customers and provide a more reasonable solution for those of us affected by this update.

Sincerely,
Abby

### 2/5 — Still intermittent sensor display

*2025-12-29, version 50.2*

Version 50.2 is an improvement but heart rate and oxygenation displays are flat lines half of my sessions. All pads light up correctly. I use both the muse 2 and Athena and the heart rate function is the same with both. So I doubt it’s the sensors fault. But this renders the “Heart” and “Strength Training” functions useless. I gave up trying to get an answer from customer service.

### 2/5 — Gute App - leider nur auf Englisch

*2025-12-17*

**Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know your thoughts. We will make sure to pass along your request for German language support to the appropriate team for further consideration.

### 3/5 — Add Russian language

*2025-12-15*

Hello dear developers! Please add Russian in the application and in practice meditation. I use your application about one year and I really like it, but my English is not so good for listening and practice meditation as one moment. Russian users ask it to you about Russian add language many times because we really want more quality in practice and to have more comfort in it.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate your request for Russian language support in both the interface and meditation practices. Your feedback is important, and We will make sure it’s shared with the appropriate team.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2026-08-07, version 54.1*

App is an absolute train wreck of locked premium features gated behind an insulting 1-week trial to accompany a $500 headband. Easiest return of the year. What a waste.

### 1/5 — Updated app version doesn’t work for original muse

*2026-07-11, version 54.1*

Need option to download older version instead of having to buy a new device as suggested - please make older version available as I really like my muse and have introduced a lot of friends to try it- but I don’t want to buy it again just because the new app version won’t work with it

### 1/5 — Really Disappointing

*2026-06-29, version 54.1*

Absolutely no customer service! First I was unable to activate my account and the app isn’t recognizing that I have a paid subscription. There’s absolutely no customer support at all except a bot and a form to fill out. Also unable to pair device. Unfortunately I have not been able to use it but not a great start!

### 1/5 — Premium pricing misleading

*2026-06-24, version 54.0*

in app says premium price in AUD is 39% discounted but it is the normal price ? Isn’t this unlawful in AU to made such a false discount claim ?

### 1/5 — Deceptive feature gating

*2026-05-30*

Fuyez.

**Developer response:** Merci d’avoir partagé votre retour.

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2026-05-05, version 53.0*

Doesn’t connect via Bluetooth. Don’t waste your time or money!

### 1/5 — Banditry

*2026-04-12, version 53.0*

I have had the Muse Headband go several years, and when I came back to it, suddenly it requires a subscription to even use. Thanks for making my device truly trash.

### 1/5 — Got too fancy

*2026-04-02, version 52.0*

Old customer of the v1 and tried the Athena. Lasted about 15 minutes and threw it in the trash. Glitchy, couldn’t hold a bluetooth signal for more than 30 seconds. Measuring brain waves and trying to do a million things. Shame. A much simpler approach and device/app that actually works would have been appreciated. Really wanted to love it.

### 1/5 — I can’t believe I’ve wasted my money on this

*2026-03-27, version 52.0*

I stopped using this thing so long ago, and now that I try to use it again the app doesn’t even work. I paid for a premium membership, and I’ve never noticed anything different. In fact, it still tries to get me to buy a premium all the time. Complete waste of $500.

### 1/5 — wont connect anymore

*2026-03-19, version 52.0*

i think the old muse was better, i regret buying the new one for the price i paid for because it doesnt work anymore after a year, i even paid a sub for nothing

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Fun app

*2026-02-11, version 51.0*

Love the app easy to use and great features recommend it!

### 5/5 — A Transformational Device That Evolved With Me Over 9 Years

*2025-03-28*

I’ve used Muse since 2017. It’s an incredible tool that provides real-time feedback, keeping you motivated with birds, scores, and levels.

That said, I wasn’t consistent—and that’s my biggest regret. Had I used it daily, the results would’ve been even deeper. Muse shows you what’s possible when your mind is truly calm—I’ve even reached 99% calm in sessions lasting over an hour.

I just hope it becomes more affordable so more people can benefit. If you’re serious about meditation, this device is a game changer.

### 5/5 — 7 years with my satisfaction

*2025-03-17, version 44.1*

The hardware quality is great and the software updates quickly, but the software is slow to respond

### 5/5 — Director of Coaching

*2024-12-06, version 43.0*

The muse is the best EEG machine for the money. With the help of the muse I have been able to achieve a 98 percent calm and I am working towards a perfect score. I am not sure if 100 percent calm is possible but here we go! If you are wanting help LMK -Adam H Mortimer Greatness is Within!

### 5/5 — They gotta figure out their library

*2024-11-13*

I absolutely love this app and the product overall—it’s a niche offering that I truly want to see thrive. The headband is what keeps me coming back, and it’s been a game-changer for me. The app itself runs smoothly and supports the product well.

That said, I’ve found the guided meditations to be underwhelming historically, and as the library grows, it’s becoming harder to navigate. With multiple types of binaural audio and a constantly expanding library, it’s difficult to keep track of what I’ve already tried or liked. Without a way to bookmark favorites or organize tracks, I’ve started avoiding new content entirely because I can’t reliably return to anything that stood out.

I hope the team considers adding features like bookmarking or playlists to make the growing library easier to use. Despite my frustrations with the guided meditations, the app and headband remain an incredible combination that I highly recommend to others.

**Developer response:** Hi there, thanks so much for your review!

Glad you love using Muse for meditation. I'll pass on your feedback to our team regarding the organisation of the app.

Have a lovely day!

### 5/5 — Wow this app is amazing!!!

*2024-07-31, version 39.0*

This app was good before but now it is amazing!
I have been using the app for 4 or 5 years. The updates-upgrades have added features that I have been wanting. I think this app is a great tool for learning to meditate.

### 5/5 — 500 hours of neuromeditation later….

*2024-06-20, version 38.0*

This device is great! After musing about 500 hours over the course of two years, I strongly believe this technology has potential benefit for many people. I strongly feel that muse meditation helped me cultivate a relaxed and focused baseline. muse meditation is so effective that it basically replaced regular alcohol consumption within my life, but that is a personal anecdote- YMMV.

Don’t place too much expectation on the technology or on your meditation practice. Strong benefits from a conventional practice will come over a very long period of time, 100-200 hours. If you want to go into the deep end of a practice, woodshed it and start doing 1-3 hour sits. Muse is an awesome gateway into meditating, but it’s also important to meditate without the app. Look into traditional styles of focused attention meditation, then pair them with the feedback. When using muse, always take time to wet the sensors + make good contact.

I feel that Muse app is really good for developing relaxed concentration - Samatha or “meditative absorption”. This is an excellent skill to acquire because it will help you maintain a calm and positive attitude in all things.

Some people gawk seeing meditation removed from a spiritual context, or seeing technology encroach into traditional practice. Others despise the idea of any practice part of religion or spirituality. I think meditation offers intense benefit to anyone who deeply engages with it. I think muse is an excellent gateway into meditation and a great tool to sharpen concentration as a specific faculty. I definitely wouldn’t have gotten so deep into practice without this device.

If you want to form your own opinion on this tool, I recommend going deep and meditating a few hours with it :)

Two requests for developers:

#1).
Can we export our brainwaves after the session? Being able to see them is awesome, but getting a CSV file would SLAP

#2).
Can we hack together a way to see progress between sessions? Since the app is recording brainwave data across months, I’d love to see an overall progress indicator. Even just a simple metric, like longest concentration streak recorded, or increase in alpha amplitude since starting with the app.

### 5/5 — great app! one suggestion

*2023-12-28, version 33.1*

i got the muse 2 for christmas and it’s been really helpful in my practices. one suggestion though is that you guys should add a dark mode! it’d be helpful for those who like to meditate right for before bed or to go to sleep, and they won’t have to strain right before bed! (i say they but i want it hehe)

### 5/5 — Great app -

*2023-12-27, version 33.1*

Keep up the great work on ease of use

I do wish they would shut the ringer off when your using it for sleep tracking. If you use it for sleep, tracking you turned it on or exterior and at set up.

### 5/5 — Landscape

*2023-12-12, version 33.1*

Is there any way to get app on IPad to show landscape? I can only see it w/portrait
