Checked silent mode on side of phone and settings to make sure sound was enabled across the board and still no sound. Also PLAY button doesn’t work anymore. Dev should update especially since there’s been an increase in hobbies/art since pandemic. UPDATE: Reinstalled and toggled sound. Working again. Dev should still consider updating to avoid confusion with new downloads. Can see potential purchasers getting frustrated trying to troubleshoot issues that should not be there in 2022. Good app. Better with minor fixes. ### 4/5 — Meh *2020-03-18, version 2.62* Really great app, and it would be 5 stars but not all the features work. I go to the website to try and download a user made song, and it won’t open the app from there. :( ### 3/5 — Needs improvements *2019-04-18, version 2.62* This is a great app if your making a quick tune, but I want to do a full song and so this app is very restrictive, it’s not long enough, there is a plus and a minus symbol at the end making it seem like I should be able to make it longer but it doesn’t seem to work also the tutorial doesn’t mention all of the buttons so I still don’t know what half of them do. On top of that there is one point where it stops when I’m trying to play it and I have to manually move it past and resume it then, and another point where it refuses to do anything past it ### 3/5 — Can’t open .midi files (iPhone) *2018-04-27, version 2.62* It crashes everytime I try to load a custom midi file. Great app, really wish their was a user guide. The tutorial is very small/basic and the program is difficult to learn. ### 5/5 — Fantastic app *2013-01-04* Very nice looking and saves you those expensive strips for the real deal. I have a 15 note music box and this app is a MUST HAVE for adapting accidentals. ### 5/5 — Amazing tool for music box lovers *2012-11-26* Never felt the urge to write a review before but as someone who has spent hours punching holes in music box strips this app is genius. The problem with creating music for the music box is that until youve punched holes in the strip you dont know what you are going to get. This app enables you to compose, play back and then print compositions making the whole process far less painless and enabling you to concentrate on the creative process. The user interface is flexible and well thought out. A great deal of care has gone into this,( the designer is clearly a lover of music boxes), and I havent been able to find anything 'missing' from an end user perspective. An amazing little piece of software design which wont hit number 1 spot on the app store but deserves to. ### 5/5 — Great! *2012-11-23* Simple to use (my kids love it!) but full of features. The new keyboard is a great addition. Time to buy a real music box! ### 2/5 — DO NOT RECOMMEND YET *2012-11-02* You need to make the app easier to use: have you even tried composing on it? The best way to make it good so it's actually a decent app is to either: 1. Make it so that musicians can use actual musical notation to tap in notes (e.g. a staff with a treble clef) 2. If not this, then make it so that you can actually see what note you're entering in (e.g. have a letter in the magnifying glass that tells you what note you're currently on, rather than those impossible to see letters on the side). DO NOT RECOMMEND purchasing this app until you fix basic user interface. The only reason I gave it a star was because the music box animation was kinda cool and the audio samples were good. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Was great on my pc, does not work with my apple products *2023-03-15* I found this a super compositional tool on my website pc but now I’m on a Mac there is no clear way to tell the programme where to find my .Mbc files. On iPhone I’ve tried putting them into Files in a folder called Music Box Composer and I’ve tried “open with” but the Mbc app won’t show up as an option. I’m sure I’m just being inept but I’ve looked everywhere for documentation to assist me and can’t find anything anywhere - would be so grateful for a steer on how I get my pre existing Mbc files to open on iPhone or MacBook. ### 1/5 — Lack of support *2020-10-30* No support, I have a problem with the app, tried emailing them, no reply. In all the other reviews with sound issues, the solution is the mute switch, which doesn’t exist on this iPad. Please help, I would like to make songs again! ### 2/5 — Needs update for apple iOS 12 *2019-02-21* This used to be a fantastic app but no longer supports iOS 12, when downloading files from the internet or sending compositions from one iPad to another. This app made my personal song come out fantastic!! It made it so easy just select whether you have a 15, 20 or 30 note box, write your music, and then it prints out the template for you that fits perfectly onto the actual strip so you just punch out the holes that are already marked for you. Couldn’t have done such a good job and so easily without this app. Worth every penny!! ### 5/5 — No sound? *2020-11-26, version 2.62* I paid $6 for this app and it doesn’t even have sound for some reason. I’ve tried every button and setting but nothing works and the tutorial doesn’t even explain half of the buttons anyway. Grant, the app developer, was very helpful in upgrading the app to work on iOS11. As per my request, he also added Files app capability. Does that mean I'll lose all my work? PLEASE UPDATE It provides a fun way to work out harmonic and rhythmic ideas very quickly. I've written close to 100 short tunes, many of which are in 3 because, well, it's a music box. MBC could use an update (according to my ipad) to make it work better with the current OS. Maybe it's a memory hog since it does crash quite often. Helps if you save work as you go. Well worth the money. Easy to use and quick to pick up. My only gripe is saving to local storage on iPad. Being able to mail .wav or .midi would be excellent. If you are composing for music box and you're a perfectionist like me, this app is absolutely essential. A real joy to work with. The best part is you do not need to know how to read music, but it definitely helps to have an ear for it. Recommend spending some time in help mode reading all of the pop ups. Once you are familiar with the buttons/functions (all of which you will use at some point) the flow is very natural.
