I assumed I would have to adapt the app in some way, but I was wrong. I am amazed at how an old man like me can make up on some lost time. The class is in intervals and stages so the learning seems infinite, but is stacked neatly and easily. The testing sections can be used anytime and are perfectly situated. The app’s feel is of a book and an interactive game. ### 5/5 — Suggestion *2018-03-18, version 2.6.1* Hi guys. Love the app. I just have a suggestion. Doing the note quiz on the treble clef and bass clef, can you make a feature where you can pick how many notes show up in the quiz? Since I'm just learning it would be easier to have a selection of just a few notes to memorize and work on at once instead of all of them at once. So for instance maybe just be able to pick EGBDF and be able to master that, then do FACE, master that and move on to more at one time because all of them at once is a lot in the beginning. I love the app the only thing i would love to see in maybe future updates is for it to be able to receive midi input from a midi controller. For example instead of clicking the notes on the screen if you could do it through a midi keyboard. I have never written a review of an app before but this has got me really excited. I have only spent a few hours, but I can see that I'm learning already. I like how it separates the "reading sheet music" aspect from just learning general music theory, and that it provides ample material for both. I have been wanting something to supplement in helping me learn theory and open the guitar up to me for years. If you have the hunger to learn and have patience reading a bit and getting quizzed on it... Then by all means, this is a priceless tool. Highly recommended ### 5/5 — Great for learning to read on fretboard instruments *2016-02-09, version 2.6.1* The exercises are very helpful. I’m using it to practice reading music on a bass. However, it does crash occasionally on a 6P running iOS 9.2.1, in landscape mode. It doesn’t lose the stats, you just have to restart. It’s not frequently enough to be annoying and I still use it everyday. However, it would be nice if they updated it. ### 5/5 — The best way the learn the basics *2015-12-24, version 2.6.1* Before Musicopoulos, I'd never spent a single penny on an app, and I gotta say: money well spent. If you are like me and really interested in learning this stuff on your own, than I strongly encourage you to purchase this app. Personally, I took a Coursera class on music theory that got really convoluted after awhile. Not only did I hardly learn anything, but I believed it was too hard for me to understand so I gave up. With this app, however, I'm learning so much more than I ever did taking the online class. They explain the theory in easy-to-understand terms, and give you follow-up practice exercises in which you have to answer a certain number of them right before you can advance to the more challenging levels of which there are three for every theory (beg/interm/adv). They break the subject matter up into 5 parts, each with their own set of subcategories. Neat and tidy and certainly manageable. You go at your own pace, whenever you find a spare moment to yourself and need a dose of mental stimulation as I often do. Learning keeps your brain young and sharp, too--an added bonus, if you're into that sort of thing. All in all, I'm thoroughly pleased, enough so that I've written this here review. If you are serious about learning music theory, and do not mind spending a lot of time going through all the reading and drills, you will want this app. It takes little time getting used to how it works and the explanations on how it works are very good. It's a good reference for music theory as well. If you are a musician, or want to be one, it's an app that should come in handy and help you along the way. This app is not a game, it's a tool for learning and reference. But it does provide scores, so in a sense it could be considered a game. The difference is that it is serious. I guess enough is said. I recommend this product for those who are serious and want to learn. ### 5/5 — Indispensable App for those who want to learn theory! *2015-10-20, version 2.6.1* I think the best way to review this app is to paste a copy of the email I sent to the developers: "Greetings and thank you for producing a very usable app that is managing to do for me what no music teacher could - understand music theory! I've been on the cusp of understanding before but never managed to break through. Am I there yet? I don't know but one thing is for certain. I FINALLY understand the circle of 4ths & 5ths! I was able to "get it" going forward but it never made sense going around the circle in the other direction and no one has been able to explain it to me until this app! Seems ridiculous but that is the reality of it. I need to understand both sides of something to get it. I'm sure the fault lies with me but that has been my learning dilemma. So needless to say your app has had a profound effect on my understanding of theory. btw, I've been a musician for over 30 years. So a heart felt "thank you" and kudos for an excellent app!" As you can read in my email this app has made it possible for me to go where no teacher could take me. It is very straight forward and very clear in its explanation. The theory sections have corresponding practice sessions so you can work the ideas into understanding. The language is concise with no waste or fluff. These folks know what they are doing! If you are interested in learning theory then you have come to the right place. It was for me, anyway! ### 5/5 — AWESOME!!! *2015-05-25, version 2.6.1* I rarely rate apps but this one is so outstanding that I felt compelled to do so. If you aspire to learn and deeply internalize music theory then this is your tool. The app provides insightful and well presented music theory concepts. After each lesson you are given the option to test your knowledge. The practice exercises are awesome. My progress is exponential compared to other learning methods, such as books, video courses, etc. Want to learn every note on the guitar fingerboard? This app lets you practice using guitar and other instruments. It's fun to use as well. Seriously outstanding!!! ### 5/5 — Long-time musician, new to theory *2015-04-21, version 2.6.1* I've been writing and playing music for many years but always with the aid of recording equipment. It's always been somewhat embarrassing that so many people I've played with have almost another language in music theory that I've not understood. My fingers understand a guitar fretboard very well but I have no idea of what the notes are nor do I know why a chord progression works. I'm doing everything by ear. So far this app has been wonderful in helping me begin to get some understanding. Also, it's not overdone with graphics, just a simple clear interface. I have a very analytical mind and have a tuff tough time just accepting that "this pattern is this way and that's how it is" (granted you learn later why) from other resources. This app presents the why from the start without overwhelming you because of it's amazingly simple illustrations. But it!! I can't believe how thorough this experience has been and I am only just now about to begin lesson 3. This app is utterly worthless. Instead of dozens of warmup exercises, there were only a couple. "Interval training" consists of questions about which note is so many steps /half steps from another. Metronome app is no better than are one. Save your money! ### 3/5 — A good aid for learning how to read music, but needs work *2011-03-23, version 1.7* This app provides a good overview of music theory and notation combined with a practice system to help improve your ability to read music. The big problem with this app is that it takes you straight to the practice when you chose a category of study and you have to quit out of that to get the lessons. The lessons should come first or be seperate. Great information, but bad execution. ### 3/5 — Nice, but needs more options *2010-03-11, version 0* I like the theory explanations. It's ok for the price, but needs more options to custom-fit each individual. As a music theorist/ composer I find this app fun, but still needs additional exercises (e.g. Visual intervals on the staff, interval strings for ear training- such as three or more intervals played in a melody and then tested on each one, etc.) Hope this review helps. I would suggest it for most, but we need to request more exercises from the developers. Keeps me on my toes, and in the car offers tests/games that actually exercise your musical mind. Only thing missing is left-handed mode for instruments in tests. Much more effective than solely working on paper; much more portable than working with paper and a separate instrument. Since I paid $3.99, I would like to see a feature that enables users turn off sounds to allow simultaneous listening to music/podcasts while studying. I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes to multitask wherever possible so this feature would be helpful for a lot of users. ### 4/5 — A necessity for any musician *2012-01-12, version 1.8.1* I've only had this app for a week, and I'm in love with it. The quizzes are endless, allowing you to just practice each concept as much as you want. As others said, it's so much more beneficial than spending commute time in this app than playing some senseless game. I can already see a vast improvement in memorization. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is there is room for improvement. I'd like to see some more advanced concepts. But keep up the good work. ### 4/5 — Nice but Confusing *2011-03-22, version 1.7* I am basically musically illiterate yet have a family of singers. I wanted to learn music theory for myself plus perhaps have something that can just play the notes so I can train myself to hear them and know what they are. So, I was overly excited to get this app! However, it takes you to a list of different musical concepts, and if you click on t hem, you are playing a very difficult game for those of us who know nothing about music. It takes some figuring out to realize that there is a button on the top (not visible at first unless you touch the screen for it to appear that says "theory" which I assume to be the 'lessons' although it didn't seem very thorough or complete. While this may be great for someone who wants to keep fresh music theory they have already learned, for someone like me it's probably not best. It offers a very well organized course with practice quizzes that truly help to learn the content. It also has options for multiple instruments, and using the guitar option has already helped me translate what I have learned to my instrument without having to actually pick up the instrument, which is perfect for times I’m away from your instrument. Highly reccomend! One suggestion I have for the developers: please add interactability with the entire guitar fretboard when doing quizzes. This would be useful for memorizing where common notes lay higher up on the neck. All lessons are easily/quickly accessible as well as their corresponding practice quizzes. The quizzes allow input on either instrument or via clicking the notes. Without too much effort I found my comprehension and most importantly retention of the content progressing quickly.
