Musica Touch offers music education (ear training, music theory/note reading, counterpoint) and composition tools (play a tune on the screen piano and see it notated, write a lead sheet, prepare a chorale or quartet), let the app invent a musical idea). Each of the 45 activities is sold individually so you need buy only the parts that interest you. Free (non-saving) versions of several of the writing tools are included, plus a free beginning exercise in rhythm tapping (Easy Rhythms) and a simple exercise in pitch reading (Single Pitches). The free Songbook Sampler shows you a few of the singalong tunes found in the Songbook activity (great for kids). In the purchased activities music can be exported as a printable pdf, or as a MIDI file, or shared with a friend for hearing/viewing in Musica Touch. Now with MIDI in/out capability for those would like to connect an external keyboard, Musica Touch can be used with iPads running iOS6, but we recommend iOS7 or later. I bought the counterpoint module, but I can’t input any notes. The instructions say “select the note/rest you want, then place it on the stave” but how do I do that? Select it from where? There is only an icon with a quarter note and rest at the bottom of the page, and touching that and then touching the stave has no effect. I’ve looked for a YouTube video of some demonstrating the note I put on an iPad but I can’t find anything. ### 5/5 — Please Update for IPad 10th Generation *2023-05-13* I loved this app on my older iPad Air. I have an iPad 10th generation now. Please update this app so I can download it on my iPad 10th generation tablet. I appreciated being able to practice counterpoint. Thank you. ### 4/5 — Useful app but interface could be improved *2020-12-05* There's a lot in this app. I have focused on the ear training apps. As someone with stubborn ears, I particularly welcome the inclusion of the pitch pattern exercise which plays you endless simple 'melodies' in c major ; and the pitch errors were you are asked to spot wrong notes in short melodies. Throughout the generated melodies sound more like music than random pitches other apps I know tend to produce. For me this is really helpful. Using the exercises can be a bit awkward- menus pop up in sometimes awkward places; there can be a lot of clicks and longer than necessary finger movements required, and selecting and deselecting can be awkward. For interval training there are easier things out there to use for free. Some of the exercises would benefit from more options - eg if you are learning a new clef you can't focus in on a group of ledger lines but get thrown into all at once - ok for revision but not for new learners. The midi connection is helpful. But overall I am getting a lot of use out of it. ### 5/5 — Perfect *2017-03-14* Though the App Store does not recognize that I do own the complete app I want to say this app is perfect for it's activities and it's over all aim. It includes ear training including rhythm training, counterpoint and composition tools. The Idea Generator alone is worth the price of admission. This app costs less than one music lesson and will be one of the most useful music apps you have. I also get discouraged quickly, and flit around between doing scales and learning tunes. This app is perfect for me, because it helps me work on any skill for as long as I want, and I actually get better. Practice lessons for sight reading, especially rhythm reading, are well thought out, and get more complex as you go. It's like having that excellent teacher who always knows what to show you next, and never yells at you for making mistakes. I haven't gotten around to trying out all of the activities (and I may never be up to trying the Counterpoint set) but the ones I have looked at are really useful and well worth a try. It took me some time to get used to the notation features but once you know how it works it feels pretty natural. There are plenty of instructions if you have the patience. Some instructional videos would be welcome. The music training activities are expertly done. I expected that they would be since the app is made by the same folks who produced Practica Musica for the desktop. "Easy Rhythms" is free and fun to play with. The rhythms you tap produce a melody complete with harmony (not always entirely successful). Unfortunately, the free activity is limited to just half notes and quarter notes which led me to get the paid version. The rhythms got pretty hairy in the advanced level of Rhythm Reading.
