### 3/5 — OK

*2025-08-07, version 2.1.6*

No producer or personnel information for albums that I’m looking for. Information seems incomplete.

### 2/5 — Very limited

*2025-02-03, version 2.1.4*

For all of the classical albums I tried, this had no more than the basic credits already available on Apple Music. No reason for me to pay extra for this.

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2025-01-02, version 2.1.3*

The information with this website is so basic. You will get more in depth information from Wikipedia! This app only lists the minimum information. I want to know who is playing what instrument, I hoped there would be some back story or liner notes but nope.

### 2/5 — LINER NOTES? WE DON’T NEED NO STINKING LINE NOTES!

*2024-07-01*

Yes we do! That’s what I thought I was getting. The words “Liner Notes” are below the name of this app. To me, Liner Notes are what is inside the record jacket, on the record sleeve or on the back of the record jacket. Sometimes there wasn’t much but sometimes there were comments by the artists, types of instruments used including amps, pedals, strings, cymbals and even golf clubs. Sometimes there was funny stuff, jabs at other musicians or even song lyrics. There was front cover art. There was back cover art and if you were lucky enough to get a double album there was double notes and art work. I checked before I wrote this and there are no real liner notes here. No inside art, no back cover art, No notes, The explanations included are just there to take up space. Example; Songwriter. A person who writes the song. I’ll keep hoping for change but I wish I had just tried the 1 Month trial before going all in.

**Developer response:** MusicSmart draws on multiple online sources and databases to gather liner notes and credits, so the amount of detail available can vary from song to song.

### 3/5 — No Liner Notes?

*2023-08-11*

Unless I’m having a difficult time navigating the updated app, it seems like all the actual “liner notes” are no longer available. There’s a wealth of information within the app, and it seems pretty well laid out since I was a more regular user, but the liner notes from old vinyl records that I used to be able to access through the app don’t seem to be there anymore. I imagine it could be a licensing thing, but it’s a shame. And if there are no actual liner notes, it makes the app name a bit misleading.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. Please get in touch via marcosatanaka@gmail.com so I can better understand this issue you're seeing and help fixing it.

### 3/5 — Inconsistent

*2023-07-10, version 2.0.0*

Great in concept but too often it glitches and delivers only cursory song data. When looking at Genius, I nevertheless see all of the song liner note information.

Keep working on it, A for concept and effort…

### 2/5 — A good idea, but only for very mainstream tastes

*2023-05-29*

This app isn’t bad, it’s just not very useful. If your musical tastes run even slightly outside of the narrow, current mainstream you are likely to be met with a lot of “there’s no data about this recording” messages.

In short, the app over-promises and under-delivers, and blaming the lack of online data to draw from seems a bit disingenuous.

**Developer response:** MusicSmart draws on multiple online sources and databases to gather liner notes and credits, so the amount of detail available can vary from song to song.

### 5/5 — Fantastic background information!

*2023-05-11*

The app offers some nice details and information! It also looks nice and well designed. Thumbs up!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your fantastic review!

### 3/5 — Now playing not reliable

*2023-05-10*

I’m on iOS 16.4.1 and think the app is great but doesn’t reliably update the now-playing song info - for example, if I’m playing the an Apple Music Radio station and the song changes I refresh and tap the headphones but it continues to only show me the first song that had been playing.. I can get it to update if I crash the app and then try again and it’ll get the current playing son.

This makes it fairly annoying to use how I want to.

I have also tried with Amazon Music and the now playing doesn’t seem to be picked up.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. I will investigate this now-playing issue when playing radio stations.

### 5/5 — Eccezionale! Consigliata

*2023-05-09, version 2.0.0*

Funziona benissimo, ha shazam integrato e colma perfettamente le mancanze dei servizi di streaming.

### 5/5 — Best way to view credits in the streaming era

*2023-03-24*

Been looking for something like this forever

**Developer response:** Glad you liked it! Thank you for the review!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Disappointing

*2025-02-26, version 2.1.4*

I was hoping, particularly as my older iPhone is not upgradable to iOS 18, that MusicSmart would give easy access to lists of sidemen, etc. I paid for a month’s access to check out its full capability, and found that, at least within the jazz listings, that very few of them have anything remotely close to a full listing of personnel, which is surprising, because the company says that it uses Discogs as one of its sources, and all of that info is listed there.

### 1/5 — Big promises, mediocre delivery

*2025-02-13, version 2.1.4*

Checked a few classical albums: worthless.

Checked some pop musicians. Not quite so bad, but far from useful

Probably why they don’t offer a 3-day trial. I wouldn’t have wasted $1.99 to discover the obvious.

Just checked Discogs. FAR better…and free.

### 1/5 — Just Apple & Spotify?

*2025-02-09, version 2.1.4*

Why are Apple Music and Spotify the only streaming services that can connect to MusicSmart? I have had this app for many years and have never really used it. When I downloaded it I was using Spotify so ut has a record (pardon the pun) of what I had in my library there. I then switched to Apple Music when they first started up (2014?). I was with Apple for a very long time. Long enough to discover that they had a cap on the number of songs you could have in your library (that number is 100,000 btw). Well, I hit 100k relatively quickly (about 2 years). I hobbled along, deleting old stuff to make way for new stuff for a couple more years until I finally had had enough. I quit Apple and switched to YouTube Music. I have been very happy them. Until something like this happens, and it happens more than I would like! So do you have a way I can connect your app to YTM? I would really appreciate it!

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your money

*2024-11-21, version 2.1.3*

Liner notes? Fat chance! I’ve found more info on Wikipedia than I’ve EVER found here…

### 1/5 — Doesn't give enough time to evaluate before buying

*2024-09-12*

I clicked 1 album and then I was blocked, I closed it immediately not knowing this would be my only chance to see what the apps is about. The next day I had another trial and that's it. Know I cannot see anything even after reinstalling the app. I am NOT buying a 25$ app when I couldn't even take 10mins to see if it even interests me.

**Developer response:** MusicSmart offers a few trial uses before requiring a purchase and provides monthly and annual subscriptions, as well as a one-time purchase option, letting users choose what works best for them.

### 1/5 — Waste of money

*2024-02-10, version 2.0.3*

At least for classical NO LINER NOTES. nothing beyond that which apple gives

### 1/5 — Terrible Update Bricks an Awesome App

*2023-11-19, version 2.0.3*

MusicSmart had been one of my favorite apps and really enhanced my listening pleasure of Apple Music. Then there was an update several weeks ago, and now all I get is the writer and the producer of each song. No longer is there a detailed breakdown of who played what instrument on a song and that’s the main reason I bought this app. Now if I want to know that info, I have to go back to Wikipedia, just like I did before buying this app. Total fail!

### 1/5 — Of little use

*2023-05-13, version 2.0.0*

App sort of works but has very limed data and therefore of little use.
I would like to see the contents of the CD insert but instead only get aonly a few items.
Plus it is very awkward to use. Better to scan lthe liner notes and add them to the album artwork.

### 1/5 — YouTube music is missing

*2022-12-19*

Unfortunately this app is not compatible with yt music !

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Elvisfan 57

*2026-08-05*

Enjoying this app immensely, only came across it accidentally but very glad I did and bought a year’s membership definitely worth it and will replace it with a full membership when it’s done . I have bought so much music digitally and it’s great to find the history behind the music and the singer, can’t recommend it enough if you’re a music fan. Nice one developers.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the kind words and for supporting MusicSmart!

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2026-07-09, version 2.3.2*

If you're a music enthusiast like me, and like getting deep into how your favourite bands created your favourite albums, this is definitely the app for you.

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2026-05-19, version 2.2.8*

If you're a music enthusiast like me, and like getting deep into how your favourite bands created your favourite albums, this is definitely the app for you.

### 5/5 — Essencial

*2026-05-11*

Tão bom ver todos os detalhes da música em um único app fácil de usar.

**Developer response:** Agradeço demais pela avaliação! Fico feliz em saber que o app está sendo útil.

### 5/5 — Music Credits

*2025-05-28, version 2.1.4*

Best app for music credit lovers!

### 5/5 — Outstanding voiceover, accessibility, and documentation

*2024-12-31*

Well, the App Store ate my original review. But there’s nothing else like this on the App Store. One of the tips in Help said that if you’re listening to the song, you can find a podcast where that song or artist is mentioned. Continuous play works by after you hit now playing it will automatically pull up all information available as you’re listening. You can customize what information is shown about an album under sections in the app settings. And all of these features are free. I just feel that real efforts have been made to make this app accessible and easy to use. Music Harbor is also a fantastic app.
I agree with the person that bemoaned the loss of the original information from the vinyl album covers. But if it hasn’t been digitized in catalog, there’s nothing that can be done to ever get that back.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your review!

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2024-09-26*

Love this app! Brings me back to when I bought physical copies of albums and would spend time going through all the lyrics and liner notes to find little nuggets of guest appearances, writers and all the other fun facts you would find. It was something I genuinely missed in this digital age of music. Thanks for creating this app!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your review!

### 5/5 — Super viele Infos zu Songs und Künstler

*2024-08-02*

### 5/5 — A little gem polished to shine!

*2023-09-04*

I'm obsessed with tracking music stats, and MusicSmart has it all. I can see how my favorite artists are doing on the charts and read album reviews.

A little gem that should be integrated in every music App

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your review!

### 5/5 — Really good

*2023-06-22*

This app is amazing!!! I love looking at the album information and the record label the album was released on. The only thing is that the release date on the album is one day off. For example, if the album was released on june 17th 2004, on the app, for some reason it says the release date is june 16th 2004. I wonder is there a way this could be rectified? On all of the albums in the Apple Music library it does the exact same thing. Other than that, I really enjoy using this app!!!

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for your review! I'll see whats going on with the release date, and fix it in future versions!
