UPDATE (24/06/2025): In version 1.3.8, the “Album Artist” view now shows all contributing artists instead of just the main album artist. This clutters the list with obscure entries, often without artwork, and makes browsing the artists I care about a mess. I’ve temporarily deducted stars until this is resolved.

Stream Music is my go-to for playing my own library. It connects quickly, is easy to navigate, and has a clean design (if you pay for it). It plays music reliably and looks great once you’ve organised your collection. The iPad version needs improvement, and it would be great to have options like downloading my whole music library to the device. Overall, a solid app with a little room to improve. I’ll keep using it and look forward to future updates.

LONG REVIEW:

I still pay for Spotify. Yes, yes, I know. But before you throw your phonograph at me in disgust, allow me to explain: it’s purely for the discovery of music. Like a truffle pig rooting through the undergrowth of algorithmic playlists in search of a sonic gem. But here's the thing: I don’t trust the cloud. I’m old-school. I want to own my music — file by file, folder by folder, tagged within an inch of its life and arranged more meticulously than a Swiss watchmaker's sock drawer.

And so, over the years, I’ve amassed a vast and glorious collection of lossless audio files. We’re talking FLACs, WAVs, and maybe the odd rogue MP3 lurking in a dark corner like an embarrassed uncle at a wedding. I did organise them into folders, subfolders, and sub-subfolders. But they were tagged about as well as a drawer full of loose cables and old takeout menus.

Enter Navidrome — an open-source server so clever, so elegant, that I’d marry it if I weren’t already in a long-term relationship with bacon. With Navidrome up and running, I had the final push I needed to properly tidy up my collection: tags, cover art, artist thumbnails, the works. Now, it was starting to feel like Spotify, but with the satisfying smugness of knowing every track is mine, mine, mine!

There was only one question left: how the hell do I play all this on my iPhone?

Behold: Stream Music.

Now, let’s start with the good. No — the great. No — the absolutely dazzling!

Firstly, it connects to my Navidrome server like a golden retriever to a tennis ball. Fast. Eager. Unfailingly loyal. It even lets you connect to multiple libraries, which is ideal if, like me, you organise your music like a taxonomist with a label maker. And unlike many other apps that occasionally forget what a song is, this one gets on with the job and doesn’t complain. Brilliant.

Secondly, the home view — it’s like Spotify’s long-lost cousin, and almost as good-looking. It digs deep into your collection and serves up musical blasts from the past you’d forgotten you even owned — like that obscure prog-folk acid jazz track from 1974 by The Baffled Walrus.

Thirdly, let’s talk aesthetics. The free version is a bit… how shall I put this… uglier than a tax audit. But if you open your wallet, release the moths, and shell out a few quid, it transforms into something positively swan-like. It's like polishing a rust-covered Morris Marina and discovering a vintage Aston Martin underneath. Not only does it look better, it unlocks a few more features too — though I can’t remember what they are. But they were probably lovely.

And finally: it just works. I’ve tried other apps, and most of them behave like an old man trying to do the Macarena. But this? This is rock solid. It plays your music with a calm, quiet confidence — like the world’s most experienced pianist playing a lullaby. And once your tags and artwork are in place on Navidrome, they carry over beautifully. Album covers, artist thumbs, all that juicy metadata — it’s laid out with the grace and taste of a Michelin-starred menu. Delightful!

But of course, this wouldn’t be a proper review without me shaking my fist at something.

Here’s what grinds my gears:

* I want to download everything. Yes, all of it. In one tap. Why? Because I remember a time when you could listen to your music without needing an internet connection. I had an iPod once. It was white. It had a wheel. It didn't need Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G, or a blood pact with a Silicon Valley server farm. Please give me a button — shaped like a smiley face, ideally — to just download my whole library onto my iPhone in one glorious binge.

* The iPad version is… underwhelming. It’s like the app had a twin, but only one of them got to go to private school. Where’s the album artist tab? (Edit: it’s there, but only viewable in portrait mode, so this needs fixing). Why does it feel so unloved? On the big screen, it could be magnificent — an at-home control panel for audiophiles. Instead, it’s like a birthday cake without icing. And oddly, another app — let’s just call it Competitor X — works better on iPad for now. Which is just… sad. I want to use this one!

Despite some snags, I love what this app is doing right now. It’s almost perfect. Like a luxury yacht with a slight tilt to one side. So I’ll keep using it, and I’ll keep rooting for it. I may even come back and update this review as new features arrive or bugs get flattened like a pancake on a Sunday morning.

Oh — and one last thing: the name.
“Stream Music”? Really? That’s like naming your child “Person”. It’s functional, sure, but has all the personality of a tax form. How about something with a bit more pizzazz? Something like ‘Bassquake.’ ‘TrackTornado.’ ‘Rhythmic Rampage.’ ‘Sonic Boom.’ No? Too far? Well, don’t ask me for names — I’m not in charge of branding. But surely, there’s something better than that?

Anyway. To whoever's building this app — good work. Carry on. And please… make the iPad version as good as the iPhone one before I’m forced to duct tape an iPhone to a dinner tray.

Great app overall. However is it possible to increase playback stability under mobile network by adding pre caching system? Let’s say the app will cache the next x songs when playing the current song. What I experienced was sometimes the upcoming song failed to load. If I skipped this song, the next song would load normally. I think this is caused by unstable mobile network connectivity. No such issues on WiFi.

Musiver is hands-down the best iOS app I’ve found for streaming my self-hosted Navidrome library. Once you pay a few quid to unlock the premium version, the app transforms from slightly drab to downright swanky, offering smooth navigation, proper metadata support, and a genuinely pleasant listening experience. It just works — reliably and beautifully. My one major gripe? There’s still no “Download Entire Library” button. For those of us who treat our iPhones like portable record stores, that feature is a must. Other apps like Amperfy do it with ease, so there’s no technical reason Musiver couldn’t as well. Still, even with that one flaw, it’s an excellent app — and one I wholeheartedly recommend.

Over the years, I’ve built a glorious collection of FLACs, WAVs, and the odd MP3 skulking in shame. It was organised — but barely tagged. Then along came Navidrome, the open-source server that changed everything. It was so elegant, I’d have proposed on the spot — but I’m already emotionally entangled with chocolate cake. With Navidrome running, I finally tidied it all: metadata, cover art, the lot. Suddenly, it felt like Spotify, but with the satisfying smugness of knowing every track is mine, mine, mine!

One problem remained: how to play it all on my iPhone? Enter Musiver. And here’s where things get exciting.

It connects to Navidrome like a golden retriever to a tennis ball: fast, eager, and relentlessly loyal. Multiple libraries? Easy. Clean navigation? Absolutely. Unlike other apps that get confused by their own reflection, Musiver just works — and works well.

Now, I read the developer’s thoughtful explanation about why it hasn’t been implemented — and with the greatest respect… I disagree.

Amperfy does it. Free. Open-source. Rock solid. Sure, the UI is more Thermos flask than champagne flute — but it works. Tap, download, done. That one feature alone keeps dragging me back to it like a moth to a pile of obscure B-sides.

I want Musiver to be my daily driver. It’s gorgeous. But when I’m off-grid and desperate for rare '90s remixes no one else remembers, function wins over form every time.

As for the developers argument that “some users might not have enough storage”? Well, sure. If you’re still rocking a 32GB iPhone, maybe it’s not your day. But mine has half a terabyte, and my (portable) library is in AAC — not exactly a storage hog. Some iPhones go up to a full terabyte! That’s enough for a full FLAC collection, every “Now That’s What I Call Music” compilation ever made, and a Dolby Atmos audiobook of War and Peace narrated by Patrick Stewart… in Klingon. There are nerds like me out here who want to carry it all. Who will pay for the storage. Who see a full offline library not as a luxury, but as a basic human right — one that ranks just below antibiotics, but well above the right not to suffer through another U2 album drop via iTunes.

So please, dear developer — you’ve built something genuinely excellent. Now give us the button. The glorious, mythical, one-button-to-download-them-all. You’re nearly there!

Even if you don’t pay the in-app upgrade this is still a great app and worth trying out

I’ve only had my navidrome server running for the past month and in that time I have tried several apps including Arpeggi, flo, substreamer, Amperfy on my iPhone and iPad Pro… with varying success (a few crashes etc). Of the ones I’ve tried so far, I’ve found this to be by far the most stable, well thought out UI and feature rich. As I mentioned, even without the in app purchase this app is great, so I was more than happy to pay the £8 to the Dev, as I feel they more than deserve it, as this is a great app and it’s obvious a lot of work has gone into it

I have a simple demand, to automatically resume music when connected to CarPlay, while being able to self-host the music library.
For Amperfy it must be running in the background to be able to auto play. When paired with Shortcuts Automation, it only supports play the first song everytime.
For Plexamp, it simply doesn't support autoplay and Shortcuts.
But this app supports tons of Shortcuts therefore can work seamlessly with CarPlay, just like Apple Music, and it's free!
I was almost considering buying apple music before trying this. Thank you very much!
