Which metal detecting app is right for you? It’s this one. Here’s why: I created My Finds because I couldn’t find an existing app to do what I wanted, the way I wanted, both in the field and afterwards. So I developed my own, invited a slew of other detectorists to beta test it, and have been tweaking and improving it constantly ever since. It works beautifully, looks good, and is getting better with every version. TRACK YOUR SESSIONS Tap a button to start and My Finds records your path. Auto-end after inactivity, pause and resume cleanly when you stop for lunch. LOG YOUR FINDS Tap to log a find at its location, and optionally note its category, subcategory, denomination, ruler, type, year, depth, metal type, VDI, and a free-text description. Curated suggestion lists for British and US coinage. Finds can be added later if you miss any while out. Finds are shown on the map with colour-coded pins to represent different categories. ADD & SHARE PHOTOS Take photos in the field. Pinch to zoom on a photo to read hallmarks and legends. If you have photos from previous sessions you want to include, select them in the Photos app, tap Share, and bring them straight into My Finds. You can also share images by tapping the share button on individual photos. RETRACE YOUR STEPS The Map tab layers previous sessions’ paths, so you can see the ground you’ve already covered, and the ground you have not. Replay any session and watch the path rebuild as the finds appear. HISTORIC MAPS AND LiDAR Overlay historic Ordnance Survey maps to research old boundaries, trackways, and lost buildings, or switch on the UK public rights-of-way layer. The LiDAR Terrain overlay reveals ridge and furrow, and other faint earthworks that satellite imagery can’t show (England and much of Wales). PERMISSIONS AND PROTECTED GROUND Keep a record of landowners: contact details, permission dates, conditions, and a copy of your agreement. Draw the boundaries of your permissions and get a gentle warning as you approach the edge. The Protected Areas overlay shows scheduled monuments in England, Wales and Scotland, plus SSSIs and other protected ground in England, with a warning if you try to start a session on one. It is available on iPhones. ## Version history (last 5 releases) ### 1.7.1 — 2026-08-11 Category and Subcategory are now two separate rows, each with its own picker, and a tap in either applies straight away — there’s no Save to remember. Subcategories used to be reachable only by going through “Change Category”, so most people never found them; now they sit alongside Denomination and Ruler as the optional field they are. Two new land types for a session: Cultivated and Failed crop. Worked-to-seedbed ground and a failed crop are their own thing, not quite ploughed and not quite stubble, and they sit next to those in the picker. Thanks to Bob Hughes for the request. Prepared sessions can be edited — tap the pencil on a plan to change any of its details. Saving updates the plan in place, so it keeps its spot in the queue. Counts throughout the app now read correctly whether there’s one of something or several — no more “1 finds”. Fixed: exported GPX files now match the GPX 1.1 schema exactly. Google Earth always accepted them; stricter mapping software may not have. The Denomination and Ruler pickers now show which region’s list you’re looking at, with its flag, and explain that it follows the session — not the region in Settings. If a session picked up the wrong country, you can set it right on the session’s Region row. Fixed: a stray GPS reading arriving out of order at the end of a session could be recorded as the final point of your track, putting a short backwards step into exported files. Delete All Data and the Replace option when restoring a backup now refuse while a session is recording, and say why. Adding a backup to your existing data is unaffected. New: import your finds from Tect O Trak — including photos. Tect O Trak has gone from the App Store, leaving its users no way to move on with their history; My Finds now reads the app’s CSV export and Images folder (zip the folder and pick the zip under Settings → Backup & Restore → Import from Another App). Grid references become map locations, finds are grouped into one session per day, and every photo comes across with its find. Fixed: typing a grid reference to place a find by hand put the pin up to a mile north or south of the spot the reference names. Grid references you type now land within a metre or two. (Locations recorded from GPS were never affected — this only touched manually-typed references.) Fixed: after Delete All Data, going back to the Sessions tab could quit the app if a session’s detail screen had been open before the delete. ### 1.7.0 — 2026-08-09 Site profiles — every piece of land you detect, rolled up. The new Sites list in Collections gathers your finds by site; tap one for its story: totals for finds, sessions and time spent, a chronology chart of when the finds date from, what was found by category and metal, and the whole site's finds scattered on the satellite map. Share it as a PDF for a landowner, archaeologist or Finds Liaison Officer. Merge two sessions into one — if the automatic session end split a single outing in two, select the pair in the Sessions list and tap Merge. The earlier session is kept; the later one's finds, photos and path move into it, with the time between counted as a break so your stats stay honest. Session photos — attach up to three photos of the land itself to a session: what the site looked like, what the day was like. Prepare sessions in advance — fill in the paperwork at home, then start the plan with a tap when you get to the field. Protected Areas now covers Wales and Scotland. Cadw and Historic Environment Scotland scheduled monuments appear with the same red no-dig outlines, tap-for-details cards and session-start warnings as English monuments, each linking to the official record. Detecting on a scheduled monument without consent is a criminal offence, and until now Welsh and Scottish sites showed no outline at all. More from LiDAR Terrain. A third visualisation, Local Relief, strips away the general lie of the land so hillsides vanish and only the small humps and hollows remain — at its best exactly where Hillshade struggles, on sloping ground. A new Classic preset gives the conventional hillshade you'll recognise from published surveys. The overlay now works on the session map as well as the Map tab, and stops cleanly at its sharpest useful zoom instead of stretching into blur. Import from Google Earth — KML and KMZ files now import directly, alongside GPX. Place marks become finds with their names, descriptions and dates, and you can open a file straight from Files, Mail or AirDrop. New for coins: an Issued For field records the region a coin was struck for, separate from where you dug it — a George II Hibernian halfpenny from an English field was issued for Ireland. US denominations join the picker, Cent to Double Eagle. And where the denomination and date pin down the metal, a one-tap suggestion offers it. Copy a find summary for your FLO email — one tap in the PAS Submission Info sheet copies everything about the find as tidy text, ready to paste alongside the photo. Improve Records can be told to stop flagging a find, for scrap you'll never improve. The record stays; only the reminder goes. Remove photos from several finds at once — filter to Scrap, Select All, and reclaim the storage while keeping the find records. View on Research Map jumps from any completed session to the Map tab, framed on that session, ready to compare against LiDAR, historic maps and your other visits. For Dutch users, much more of the app now speaks Dutch: metal types, the protected-area warnings and their map cards, historic-site labels, and the session and site PDF reports. Also: deleting a category now asks first and names what would go with it; Custom Queries understand VDI ranges; VoiceOver announces session stats and finds card titles in the Headings rotor; restoring a large backup explains the wait; and a subscription check no longer misreads your status when the app opens with no signal. ### 1.6.1 — 2026-07-31 This maintenance release polishes recording, insights and accessibility: The Log Find sheet now protects a half-entered find: swiping it away or tapping Cancel with details entered asks before anything is discarded. Finds recorded with a depth preset show their depth in the finds list and in shared session reports, following your metric or imperial setting. New find category: Ox Knob / Horn Protector, under Horse / Animal. Custom Queries: the date filter now covers the whole of the chosen days, and VDI or year ranges work with just a minimum or just a maximum. The session time slider’s labels now show the session’s start and end times correctly. Colour swatches in the club and landowner editor reliably show your current selection. VoiceOver improvements throughout, including sort-order announcements, User Guide heading navigation and clearer row descriptions. Numerous under-the-bonnet reliability fixes to backups, imports and photo handling. ### 1.6.0 — 2026-07-20 GPS track quality Stray GPS readings — where the phone briefly reports a position far from where you actually were — are now filtered out as they happen, so your recorded track stays true to your walk. Shared and exported GPX tracks are cleaner: a stray reading or a signal gap no longer draws a long straight line across the map. Your track no longer breaks up at detecting pace. Quiet spells while you sweep and dig stay one continuous path; the line only breaks where you genuinely moved during a gap. Find depth Tap a depth preset when logging a find to record how deep it was. The depth shows on the find’s detail page, can be changed any time, and follows your measurement setting (inches or centimetres). The free-text depth note is still there for anything that doesn’t fit a preset. Insights gains a Depth Distribution chart and a Deepest Find record card. Coin metal When you log a coin, My Finds can suggest its likely metal — silver, gold or copper alloy — worked out from the denomination and year. Tap the suggestion to fill it in; nothing is set unless you choose it. Dated coins no longer ask for a metal on the Improve Records list, except where it genuinely can’t be told apart — like a wartime threepence, which came in both silver and brass. Date Range You can now record the period a find dates to — like 1250–1400 for a medieval buckle type — separately from the Year field, which stays reserved for dates actually stamped on the object. The new fields appear when logging a find and on its detail page, for every category, with a CE/BCE switch and open-ended ranges (“From 1066”). A date range counts as a recorded date on the Improve Records list. Backups Backups now include your hand-drawn field boundaries and your agreement documents (photos and PDFs of written permissions), plus each find’s favourite star, structured depth and date range — so restoring onto a new phone brings everything back complete. GoTerrain imports All of GoTerrain’s find icons are now recognised, so imported finds land in a sensible category instead of Other / Unidentified. The gold, silver and copper icons also fill in a find’s metal type when GoTerrain didn’t record one. New find categories Two new top-level categories join the UK set: Tools / Implements (agricultural and trade tools, surveying gear, personal implements) and Token / Medal (trade tokens, jettons, commemorative and award medals). Both offer type suggestions and are mapped for PAS export; anything you’ve already recorded keeps its name and stays where it is. Two new metal types in the picker: White Metal and Nickel Silver. Find notes A find’s notes can now be added or changed on the find detail screen — previously they could only be entered when the find was first logged. Maps A session’s map now marks where the session ended, including the true closing point when a session ended on the drive away. UK rights of way are drawn in their proper colours again, matching the map legend. The Map tab opens centred on your current location instead of zoomed out to fit every find. Stability Fixed a class of rare crashes where a find’s list row could be redrawn just after the find was deleted.
