## What is Mycolog?

=== Quick List of Features ===

(1) Offline map support -- No one gets great cell reception in the woods, but everyone has a GPS signal
(2) Pinpoint your location and altitude -- Find a mushroom once in a spot and you'll surely find it again there
(3) Easy input of common attributes -- Every mushroom book starts by advocating you log these
(4) Optimized for one-hand use -- Mushroom in one hand, log in the other
(5) Experimental Exploration Mode -- Use public records of mushroom discoveries via iNaturalist to find potential foraging locations

Please Note: If you are looking for an app to automatically identify mushrooms for you, this is not it.

I am providing this app free-of-charge to other mycology enthusiasts, but should you wish to support my continued development efforts, you can donate via the Settings page :).

=== The Story of Mycolog ===

I recently fell in love with mushroom hunting. Initially, I relied on paper and pencil to keep track of my finds and forays. But that left me with incomprehensible directions and descriptions.

Having a good log is the cornerstone of making mushroom hunting more approachable.

So I searched for a technology to help me. I found apps that promised to identify mushrooms through photos, but I didn't want that. I wanted an app to help me keep track of my finds.

Thus, the idea to create Mycolog was born.

Mycolog was created over the course of several months. I developed this app while testing it in the field as I hunted mushrooms this past season. I think I've arrived at some very useful features that would otherwise be nearly impossible without Mycolog:

(1) Offline map support -- No one gets great cell reception in the woods, but everyone has a GPS signal
(2) Pinpoint your location and altitude -- Find a mushroom once in a spot and you'll surely find it again there
(3) Easy input of common attributes -- Every mushroom book starts by advocating you log these
(4) Optimized for one-hand use -- Mushroom in one hand, log in the other

I hope you enjoy Mycolog. It's been an incredibly useful companion for me.

### 5/5 — every fungal enthusiast should have it!

*2022-08-07*

great app for all mycology needs.

### 5/5 — An app every mycologist should have

*2021-03-07*

This app is the best, and it’s free, double whammy. Best app for foraging and keeping logs, everyone with a passion for mycology should know about this app.

### 5/5 — Camera functions works perfectly!

*2020-05-21*

The app rocks and the developer has figured out the camera function. Super easy to use and helpful while foraging! Thanks for this :).

### 3/5 — Pretty but not practical

*2019-12-11*

The user experience for uploading a photo is totally not functional. Even taking a photo within app using camera doesn’t work. Everything else seems to work well, but the photo access issue is a very basic feature. Basically not worth using due to it not working. Please fix.

### 3/5 — Photo function needs a little work!

*2019-11-03*

I haven’t had a chance to actually utilize this app because the photograph function will not allow me to upload pictures that I have taken recently. The app will not allow you to open a folder with photographs; therefore, you have to scroll forever to find the photograph that you want to upload.

I think if this were to be fixed then it could be a neat app. I’m interested in utilizing it once that’s addressed. 😬

### 1/5 — Photo support

*2018-11-03*

I downloaded this a couple weeks ago. Today I got a chance to go hunting, found my first mushroom and got all set to add it to the log. I could not get a picture added. I tried taking and uploading from photo album. Would love to figure this out.

**Developer response:** Very sorry to hear that. The library I have been using to handle the camera + photo album is no longer being actively worked on, which seems to be causing some unexpected behavior.

I will be releasing a new version of the app in the coming weeks, with some fixes to how photos specifically are handled. Hopefully that will fix the issues you are seeing. If not, please let me know via https://mycolog.sumerit.com/issues. I want to make sure everyone can actually use this :).

### 1/5 — So close and yet so far

*2018-10-24*

I am so sad because this app is almost terrific, however...with iOS 12.0, the photo function is unusable. If I want to use a photo from my library, they are in a somewhat chronological order from older to newer (a real problem when you have thousands of images). I say newer not newest because a my last photo was not at the end. Very disappointing after all that swiping. There is no way to access photo folders, and worst of all, when you take a photo from within the app and save it, it is replaced with the oldest image in my photo library. Every mushroom I’ve photographed so far has been transformed into the same lovely necklace. When the photo thing is resolved, I’m sure I’ll give this app 4 or 5 stars...but until then it is unusable.

**Developer response:** Yikes that sounds very frustrating! I will take a look at that issue. I have not done much testing on iOS 12, so hopefully it's something simple.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work on iOS 10.0

*2018-10-04*

Something wrong with it. I can’t use it on iPhone 7 Plus iOS 10.0. Most of the time when I click on Explore it crashes.
Data for the maps is taken from iNaturalist, but I find maps on iNaturalist are better.

### 2/5 — Decent for free before updating to 11.4

*2018-07-25*

For a free app I thought this was a pretty decent offering. After updating to ios11.4 though I am saddened to find out the app no longer works.

**Developer response:** Hmm, that's interesting. I have tested the app on 11.4 and I didn't see any specific issues. I'm releasing a new version soon so hopefully that will fix the issues you are having!

### 5/5 — Amazing Program

*2018-06-28*

When it comes to identifying fungi, the devil is in the details and and if that’s the case then this app was made with a whole demon invasion in mind. It’s a one stop shop for all components of mushroom identification. It has colour gradients for the cap, stipe, and spore print which is a huge help when you aren’t sure if you should call that one mushroom you found brownish-yellow or yellowish-brown. The UI is sleek and clean and the features it offers are amazing

10/10

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6 — 2020-01-16

THE CAMERA DEBACLE
I know there have been a number of issues w/ the camera and I apologize for that. The author of the library I was using stopped maintaining the library and as a result the camera module (when creating a Mycolog) was behaving incorrectly. I switched to a different library and re-implemented all of the features from the previous library. Hopefully that makes everything work again for folks :).

LIST OF CHANGES
+ Re-implemented the camera to mimic previous library, which was deprecated
+ Lazy loading of Mycolog entries to avoid stutter when scrolling
+ Fixed a few minor bugs across the app
- iPad support is not perfect -- it should be usable, but some things will be oddly-sized

### 1.5 — 2018-12-11

Bugs
+ Many bug fixes, especially several bugs related to the way images were saved and loaded. This was impacting app loading times, ability to take photos, and the listing of Mycologs efficiently.

Features
+ Added ability to denote habitat of mushroom
+ Added ability to take text notes about mushroom
+ Added ability to take a recorded voice note about mushroom
+ Updated UI for the offline map downloader
+ Fixed a couple issues with the Explore tool

### 1.4 — 2018-08-25

+ Several UI/UX updates.
+ Added a new feature for Exploring public mushroom identifications from the iNaturalist postings API. This is an experimental feature since it is still not working 100%.
+ A few updates to Mycolog listing and control.

### 1.2 — 2018-03-10

+ Fixed layout issues in iPad version (still not perfect, but much better)
+ Energy optimizations to lengthen battery life
+ Logo update :)
+ Minor changes to wording / text throughout the app
+ New mushroom visualizer - replaced the attributes + dimensions + rendering with just a rendering that shows proportions and colors
+ Mushroom detail now displays the photos, visualization, map on one tab and the full set of attributes on a separate non-editing tab
+ Circular image icons rather than arbitrary rectangles
+ Fixed a couple minor bugs

### 1.0 — 2018-03-06

No release notes.
