## What is NAS Guard?

NAS Guard – keep an eye on your TrueNAS, right from your iPhone.

NAS Guard connects to your TrueNAS server over the encrypted WebSocket API (JSON-RPC) and shows your system's status and health clearly and in real time.

MONITORING (free)
- Dashboard: CPU, RAM, network throughput, load
- Pools & datasets: capacity, status, scrub state
- Disks: health, temperatures, ZFS errors (read/write/checksum)
- Disk health forecast: drive health trend
- Apps/containers, VMs and services: running status
- View data protection: snapshots, Cloud Sync, Replication, Rsync, TrueCloud, Cron
- Shares: SMB, NFS, iSCSI, NVMe-oF
- Security & certificates, network interfaces, UPS
- Your NAS system alerts

FILES & PREVIEW (free)
- Browse your NAS file system folder by folder, with size and modification date, folders first, and pull-to-refresh.
- Rich Quick Look preview: photos (JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC, WebP, TIFF, BMP), PDF, plain text and code (JSON, XML, YAML, shell, Python, Swift, JS/TS, SQL and more) and office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Numbers, Keynote).
- Built-in audio player (MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, M4A and more) with a live spectrum and waveform visualizer.
- Video: MP4, MOV and M4V play directly (stream-optimized files stream without a full download).

DO MORE WITH THE OPTIONAL AGENT (free, self-hosted)
The NAS Guard Agent is a small container you install on your TrueNAS in one tap – just pick a pool and a port, no shell or compose editing. It keeps itself up to date automatically and adds:
- Real-time alerts: get notified about outages and important events even when the app can't reach your NAS directly – faster and more reliable than background polling.
- Live Activities (Control Pack): follow long-running jobs (scrub, resilver, replication, Cloud Sync, Rsync) live on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, updated in the background even when the app is closed.
- Full media streaming: play video of any size instantly with no download, and open containers Apple can't handle natively (MKV, AVI and more) via on-the-fly HLS remux – with hardware-accelerated transcoding on Intel/AMD GPUs when available.
- Runs entirely on your own NAS.

IN-APP PURCHASES – honest and transparent

Free:
- 1 server profile
- Full read/monitoring feature set, files & preview, and the optional agent

Unlimited Servers (one-time purchase):
- As many server profiles as you like
- Background monitoring of all servers (free: only the selected one)

Control Pack (one-time purchase) – unlocks all control features:
- Power: shut down, reboot and wake your NAS via Wake-on-LAN
- Apps/containers: start, stop, redeploy, update (single & all)
- VMs: start, stop, restart
- Services: start/stop
- Pools: start/stop scrub
- Datasets: create, edit, delete, lock/unlock
- Shares: create and enable/disable (SMB, NFS, iSCSI, NVMe-oF)
- Data protection: run/abort/toggle Snapshot, Cloud Sync, Replication, Rsync, TrueCloud and Cron tasks
- Live Activities (with paired agent)
- AI assistant: ask questions about your NAS – fully on-device via Apple Intelligence, no cloud

Tip (optional): small, medium or large support for development. Unlocks no features.

GOOD TO KNOW
- Without the Control Pack the app is fully usable read-only – you won't control anything by accident.
- Wake-on-LAN must be enabled on your NAS first (BIOS/UEFI + network card) and only works on your local network, not remotely.
- The AI assistant requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device with Apple Intelligence enabled.
- All purchases are one-time – no subscriptions.

NAS Guard is an independent project and is not affiliated with iXsystems or TrueNAS.

### 5/5 — Awesome app, great dev

*2026-05-05*

This app is not only really well made, it contains a lot of useful features and the dev is very responsive to feedback. Highly recommend to anyone using TrueNAS

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the kind words!
Feedback like this keeps the motivation high.
If you ever have ideas for new features or run into anything, feel free to reach out directly — always happy to hear from users.
Enjoy NAS Guard!

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2026-04-29*

I really like this app and while I hope the developer can make it open source, I also understand why not. I do think there would be more trust in the app and eventually more customers willing to pay.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback and for supporting NAS Guard with your purchase. We understand the appeal of open source and respect that philosophy. However, we've made a deliberate decision to keep NAS Guard closed source — for good reasons.

NAS Guard connects to your most sensitive infrastructure. Every release goes through Apple's rigorous App Review process, including automated and manual security checks. Your API key never leaves your device. There is no account, no cloud, no tracking, no analytics, no telemetry, and no third-party SDKs. You can verify this yourself through any network traffic monitor.

As an indie developer, keeping the source closed allows us to sustain ongoing development, provide timely updates for new TrueNAS releases, and deliver the quality you expect. We believe trust is built through behavior, not just code visibility — and we back that up with zero data collection.

We hope you'll reconsider, but either way, we appreciate your honest feedback.

### 4/5 — Solid bones

*2026-04-11*

Solid concept- I don’t mind paying the $1 for the full feature set. I’d like to request a couple extra features:
1. I moved the NAS guard agent from being managed by the trueNAS apps to being managed by dockhand like all my other containers. The iOS app is connected, but thinks I haven’t installed the agent in the settings. Probably just needs an update to how the app confirms installation.

2.I’d like to see all my dockhand containers in the app UI, because right now I only see dockhand- so maybe an update to the agent allowing access to the docker socket.

3. Another control option I’d like to see added is the backup tasks.

Lastly, I challenge you to respond to this without using AI…

### 5/5 — Nice app but should be open source

*2026-03-13*

I paid for the extra features but I don’t like that it’s not open source so I will probably stop using it.

I hope the developer can make it open source. I think there would be more trust in the app and eventually more customers willing to pay.

### 5/5 — The app looks awesome

*2026-03-04*

I find the app very useful. Finally we can reach TrueNAS controls from the nice ui.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the kind review, Ighor! I'm really glad you find the app useful — that's exactly what I set out to build. More features and improvements are on the way. If you ever have any feedback or feature requests, feel free to reach out!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.73 — 2026-07-23

Some bug fixes to the messaging system

### 1.72 — 2026-07-18

- Fixed a bug that was preventing users from reaching their agent using services like Tailscale

Please share your experiences with this fix on our forum (https://community.no-logs.de)

### 1.71 — 2026-07-14

This release focuses on a smoother, more reliable start-up experience:

- Fixed a Face ID issue where the unlock prompt could repeatedly reappear on some devices (notably iPhone 12).
- Fixed a bug that caused the app to sign in to your NAS twice on launch.
- Returning to the app from the background is now seamless — your live connection is kept alive instead of briefly dropping and reconnecting.

Thanks for using NAS Guard! As always, keep the feedback coming.

### 1.70 — 2026-07-12

- Wake-on-LAN: power on your NAS right from the app (Control Pack). Tap "Wake NAS" in the Control Center. MAC addresses are detected automatically – including multi-NIC and bonded (LACP) setups.

! Important: Wake-on-LAN must be enabled on your NAS first (in the BIOS/UEFI and network card settings). It only works on your local network, not remotely.

### 1.69 — 2026-07-11

- Fixed a bug where users with a paired NAS Guard Agent but Background Updates disabled did not receive push alerts. The app now correctly registers with the push service in both cases, and prevents duplicate notifications when both the Agent and background polling are active. Settings now shows clearer guidance on alert sources.
