## What is NAS Media Player?

Stream movies, music and videos directly from your NAS drive to Apple TV over SMB, WebDAV and DLNA/UPnP. NAS Media Player turns your television into a media center by connecting to network storage from Synology, QNAP, Western Digital, Asustor, TerraMaster, Buffalo and any standard SMB, WebDAV or UPnP server.

Three ways to connect. Enter an SMB server address, share name and credentials to browse folders, with guest access for open shares. Point to a WebDAV URL with a username and password, or anonymously, to stream over http or https. Or let the app automatically discover DLNA and UPnP media servers already running on your network, with no address or login to type.

Play all popular video formats including MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI and M4V on the big screen. Audio playback supports MP3, FLAC, AAC, WAV, AIFF, M4A and OGG with visualizations. Navigate your library with smooth, responsive controls on the Apple TV remote.

Switch between multiple audio tracks embedded in your video files. Many MKV and MP4 movies carry several audio tracks including original language, dubbed versions and director commentary. Select your preferred track during playback without stopping the video or reopening the file. Useful for bilingual families watching films in the original language and for anyone with a multi-language collection.

Full playback control. Skip forward and backward, pause and resume, track progress on the timeline. Switch between fullscreen and fitted display modes. Controls auto-hide during playback and reappear with any remote button press.

Connect to shared folders, Samba servers, macOS file sharing, WebDAV shares and dedicated NAS appliances. Compatible with common SMB protocol versions and with DLNA/UPnP media servers, including those built into Synology DSM and QNAP QTS and standalone servers such as Universal Media Server and MiniDLNA. Stream wirelessly over your home WiFi without copying files to your Apple TV.

For home theater users who keep movies on network drives, music listeners with FLAC collections, families sharing home videos from central storage and cord cutters building personal media libraries.

Interface built for tvOS with focus-based navigation, glass-effect buttons and a dark theme for living room viewing. Loading indicators show real-time progress when streaming large files.

No subscription. No cloud storage. No monthly fees. Your media stays on your local network storage and streams directly from NAS to Apple TV.

Works with Synology DSM, QNAP QTS, TrueNAS, OpenMediaVault and UnRAID, and connects to Time Capsule and AirPort drives or any computer acting as a file server.

Setup takes seconds. For SMB or WebDAV, enter the address or URL, then a username and password or connect as guest. For DLNA and UPnP, pick a discovered server from the list. Browse folders and open any file to start playback.

Lightweight app with a small footprint and quick launch. Reliable streaming handles large video files smoothly, with background buffering for steady playback.

Stream video and music over SMB, WebDAV and DLNA/UPnP from any NAS drive with full Apple TV remote support. Browse folders, play multiple formats, connect securely or as guest. A private home theater and media center on your local network, with no cloud services.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 7.4 — 2026-08-19

Build a queue, and hear albums the way they were recorded.

Gapless playback.
- The next track is fetched while the current one is still playing and handed straight to the audio engine, so albums run end to end with no break.
- Truly gapless for FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF.

Build your own queue.
- Press and hold Select on any track or folder to Play Next, Add to Queue, or queue everything after it. The Up Next screen shows what you lined up and what the folder holds, and lets you reorder, remove, or jump to anything. Your queue is still there the next time you open the app.

Save it as a real playlist.
- Turn any queue or folder into an .m3u8 file written straight to your NAS, so it opens in this app, on your phone, and in your desktop player.

Play All and Shuffle.
- Start a whole folder from the browser without hunting for the first track.

Sort your library ten ways.
- Album Order reads disc and track numbers from your tags, so albums play in the order the artist sequenced them even when the files are not numbered. Also sort by Name, Date, Size, Kind, Album, Artist, Album Artist, Year or Genre, each reversible. Tags are read straight off the server without downloading your music, and remembered afterwards.

Also in this release: clearer Repeat states, tidier browser header, and a tougher playback path that falls back automatically on files other players choke on.

### 7.3 — 2026-08-11

Track names from your tags
- A new Track Names setting in Settings lets audio files show the title stored inside them instead of the raw file name, both in your folders and on the Now Playing screen. Video files always keep their file name, so nothing you navigate by disappears. Switch back to file names any time.

No more typing share names from memory
- Enter your server and let the app show you what is on it. Browse shares lists every folder your account can reach, so you can pick the right one instead of guessing at spelling and capitalisation. When a connection fails because of the share name, the real list comes to you automatically.

Know why a connection failed
- Connection problems now come with a real explanation rather than a generic password warning. The app works out whether the folder name is wrong, whether your account lacks permission for it, whether the server rejected your sign-in, or whether the server only speaks the outdated SMB1 protocol - and for that last one it points you at the exact menu on your NAS.

A cleaner, more polished interface
- We refined the UI throughout the app with clearer layouts, improved spacing, and more consistent controls, making everything easier to scan, navigate, and use.

### 7.2 — 2026-08-06

Sharper details for your music files.
- Album art, titles and artists for audio files now come from the files' own tags, including M4A, MP3 and FLAC covers that were previously missed
- Covers that were previously mismatched refresh by themselves the first time you open a folder

### 7.1 — 2026-07-17

This update makes everyday navigation and long viewing sessions noticeably smoother.
- Better remote navigation: the Menu button now steps back through folders in the browser and asks before exiting the app on the main screen - no more accidental disconnects
- Unplayable or damaged files are skipped automatically, so one bad file no longer interrupts your queue
- The Now Playing screen shows real titles, artist info and artwork for whatever is playing
- Music folders with cover.jpg or folder.jpg now display proper album art
- Stability improvements and minor fixes throughout

### 7.0 — 2026-07-06

NEW: DLNA and UPnP support

Your Apple TV can now find media servers on your network by itself. Open the app, pick your NAS from the list and press Connect. No usernames, no passwords, no IP addresses to type.

- Works with Synology, QNAP, WD, miniDLNA, Plex, Twonky, Kodi and any other UPnP media server
- Movie posters and album art come straight from your server
- Instant streaming and Download First mode with smart caching both work over DLNA
- Manual address entry is still available for advanced setups

ALSO IMPROVED
- Buffer size and Fast Decoding settings now more effectively influence playback
- Continue Watching no longer suggests movies you have already finished
- A NAS going to sleep no longer interrupts what you are watching
- Faster browsing: posters are cached and large folders load quicker
- More reliable connection timeouts and smarter shuffle

Questions or ideas? We read every email: see Help & Support in the app.
