Second, on editing the chart, it would be sweet if one could add text notes, like an asterisk to play and alternative chord, with text, not a handwritten note. Please advise **Developer response:** Hi! Yes, you can copy and paste sections. Long press the section title box that you want to paste and select Copy Section. Then, long press and empty or new section and select Paste. Yes, a movable text box is something we really want to add. It would be nice not having to use handwriting. The only thing I would like to do is be able to put songs in a set list. The online distribution says you can but I haven’t found it yet. Otherwise I choose this app over 1 chart ### 4/5 — Bass line *2025-09-03* I’ve spent a couple of hours looking through the tutorials but there is no reference to the most basic function of placing one number above another to denote the bass line. There are examples, so it must be possible. But a well kept secret that makes the app useless for me. Else, brilliant. Update: Finally found the secret! We've had a few complaints about instructions how to use the app. Sorry for that. Different bass parts of chords make the chord an Inversion. To write one, enter your chord, press "INV" then enter your bass note. It'll show as a fraction. I think there's a new update on the App Store since June. It smooths out a lot of things. Right now my issue seems to be up retrieving saved charts. When I pull a chart from google drive or apple files apps, the nns app opens, but the song I tried to add isn’t there. NOTE: this seems to work fine when saving a chart to my iPhone, but it hasn’t been working on the iPad version of the app since the last update… hmm **Developer response:** Hi j3rmz0r, Thanks so much for checking out our app and leaving a great review! I hear you. I've made hundreds of charts with the app. My concern, also, is an easy backup for all songs. The cloud would be excellent for accessing across devices like you're talking about. Your idea about split screen in landscape mode is very cool too. I'm usually writing the chart on my pad while listening on Apple music or whatever. A small part of the screen for navigating the song would be excellent. As we speak, we're working on the backup thing and a bunch of other updates and additions. Thanks, Chas ### 4/5 — Outstanding Concept - Almost 5 Stars *2024-09-03* What a useful app. Aside from the occasional bug this app is incredibly useful for professional musicians. It allows for very quick charting with good arrangement detail. There are a few minor updates that will make this app outstanding: 1) The app needs to support landscape mode, at least on on iPad. 2) When copying sections, it would be great if it copied annotations too. 3) Annotations get easily wonky if any edits are made above them, ie adding a diamond pushes the chart down but not the annotations. Ideally the annotations should stay aligned with the row they are written on. 4) I would absolutely love the ability to add text. For Repeats I often type things like “x4” but this is not ideal because the numbers used in this way will still turn to chords in ABC mode. I prefer this over annotations because of the issues in #3 above. 5) A better way of showing time signature changes would be really useful. Annotations is also tough here due to #3 above. 6) Thr clear/delete functions are slightly confusing. This is manageable now but there could be some UX adjustments here to make it a bit more intuitive. 7) Allowing a tap to enter tempo would be amazing. This currently requires a second app. These are somewhat picky suggestions. The app overall is really useful, and these enhancements would solve most of the gaps I’ve encountered when using this for gig situations. **Developer response:** Hi, breisdor! Also the whack movement of editing a chart where annotations don't follow. One thing we've updated is the annotation section. We now have a lasso tool so you can select a notation and move it intact wherever you want. Yes, moveable text boxes have been on our wish list for a while. We're a small bunch working on the app and that's a pretty hard one, but will happen. I see what you're saying with the x3. Sounds like you're writing one line and repeating it 3 or 4 times for a section? The X is actually a bar of "No Chord". You'd have to handwrite "x3", but I understand the trouble with that. Changing Time Sig is a quirky Nashville thing. Most of the time, in a pop/country song, you're just adding a partial or half bar at the end of a phrase. We use the hash marks and box the extra measure in; a bar of 3, 3 hashmarks and a box. Box is optional, but helps draw attention to the Sig change. otherwise, if you're changing for the rest of the song torso, a new Sig would indeed be helpful. We have updated the Clear/Delete functions. I think they are a little easier to get. Not sure I understand you with the Tempo entry requiring a 2nd app? Did you mean a 2nd Tap? Chas ### 4/5 — Great app, two minor issues *2024-05-20* Great app for the cost. Does exactly what I expected it to. Only two issues: the 'X's don't line up underneath numbers, looks uneven. And on the desktop app, it's cumbersome to use the mouse to input symbols. I know this is meant mostly for iPad, but it would be great to use it on the desktop as well. Highly recommend this app, even with the two issues! Makes my chart writing so much clearer, as opposed to my horrible handwriting ### 4/5 — Missing organization feature *2024-04-21* Top-notch digital app for making charts, efficiently and cleanly. Not much I would change about the chart making tool itself. However, the app is missing organizational features. User-made charts are listed alphabetically in one long list, rather than in individual files or modules such as “artist” or “genre”, which is a huge pain when searching for material on the spot. Of course, users can always export charts to their own organizational apps, but an internal filing system is surprisingly absent from this app. Hoping the developers will fix this feature in 2024! For example, For Score does everything you talk about that's missing from our app, really well. Now that I have others to play with, I’m using this app to make cleaner charts and quickly send them via email. Switching to the letter names is a HUGE feature - perfect for when you have musicians not accustomed to the number system. My only feature request would be text annotations, and the ability to insert a time signature change. In Nashville, most time sig changes are for an extra half measure or so at the end of a phrase. For example, when a song in 6/8 has and extra measure of 3/8, instead of changing TS to 3/8 and then again back to 6/8, you put 3 hash marks over the bar and box it in if you like. The interface is easy to use, mostly, especially for arrangements without too many twists and turns. Overall, this app gets the job done for basic charting. The app is almost as efficient as pen and paper, for an experienced chart-maker, but it’s not quite there, yet NNS lacks in a few ways: - Instead of offering text-based notes for written cues etc, NNS only offers freehand “drawing tool” style annotation, which appearz sloppy and difficult to make legible— easily inserted text windows would vastly improve this app. - Organized Storage is lacking here. Charts are exclusively listed alphabetically, and there is no option to make folders or lists for specific artists, venues, etc— This feature is glaringly missing, and it’s puzzling why something like this isn’t present for organizing users’ charts. I plan to continue using NNS. However, it’s no substitute for pencil & paper, the gold standard of chart making. I guess it’s supposed to be intuitive but it’s not intuitive for someone like me who’s not totally steeped in NNS. It may not keep your charts!!! *2025-09-21* I almost never review apps, but just want to save somebody else from the headache. I was excited to see this app, as all the other notation apps can’t do the simple Nashville numbers charts that I find most helpful. I’m joining a wedding band and have to chart out about 60 songs. I’ve charted out about 30 of them so far, went back and checked a few of them earlier ones I did and saw that the app will randomly lose information that I’ve entered in. This app fail at the one and only thing that it needs to do: saving the charts that I write. I can’t trust this app, and will be requesting a refund. I’ve wasted hours going back and redoing charts that I have already written once, sometimes twice. **Developer response:** Hi Jacob, sorry about the delay getting back to you. So sorry about losing charts that you've already written. It has happened to me when I deleted the app before backing it up. I lost a ton of charts; a lot of work. As a result, we added the ability to batch back up all of your charts in the .nns file format. However, I've not lost any data or chart since then. Can you be more specific about what information was missing when you opened your earlier charts? We've actually never had anyone tell us about this problem? Are you on the latest version? Create 3 charts. First two short & easy. 3rd not so. Bit of a road map. No prob, I’ll try the sec c&p feature. Paste a verse, no mods needed. Create a chorus. Paste another verse. Make a couple of mods. Copy chorus. DOH! The section edit pop up menu is now playing gingerman. Catch it if you can!! The screen coords haven’t been offset by scroll. No can do. Here’s what really gets my goat… I’ve now got 3-4 invested in a tool that ALMOST Works!!! ARG!!!!!! ### 1/5 — Gut aber noch viel Luft nach oben *2021-06-09* Wirklich gute Idee und eine hilfreiche App die allerdings noch einige Nachbesserungen braucht. 1. Es lassen sich keine Akkorde eingeben um sie dann in zahlen umzuwandeln. Umgekehrt geht das. 2. Keine Möglichkeit der Sortierung. Wenn man bspw. 100 Lieder hat ist keinerlei Übersicht mehr vorhanden. Eine Setlist anlegen ist nicht möglich. 3. Alles auf englisch. Schön wäre eine detaillierte Anleitung des NNS auf deutsch. 4. Handschrift wird nicht verschönert. 5. Handschriftliche Notizen werden beim senden bspw. Von iPad auf iPhone nicht übertragen (NNS Format). Das störende ist, um gut mit der App zu arbeiten braucht man zusätzlich zum notieren und sortieren eine zweite App. Goodnotes oder Notability. Das ist sehr schade. Es kommen keine Updates. Why? ### 3/5 — Stylus Issues *2024-08-26, version 1.8* While I’m enjoying the app, there appears to be an issue when using the stylus to write notes. The stylus works fine in the Notes app. But in NNS, it starts out okay, there seems to be latency issues and then the letters look “wonky.” It’s almost as though it can’t render as written so it “cuts corners.” I have made sure the OS is up to date. I have also cleared the ram and closed all other apps. Since I do take a lot of notes, this is important to me. I used it to chart blues, rock, country, and kept all of the songs to one page. Sending NNS charts to forScore for organization and more detailed editing is quick and easy. Would love to see more organizational tools for saved songs in updates (folders to sort by artist or something?). The option to export as a pdf AND the editable NNS file is really useful too. This has not only allowed me to learn the Nashville Numbers system, but has made transposing songs so much easier! I believe it was created by Chas Williams who also wrote a great book about NNS. I’ve been looking for something that I could use for making session charts in my studio. This app seems to be able to handle many variations of chart notation, including adding your own markup and annotations. But the only thing I wish it had were more instructions. There’s a simple explainer for how to use the app but not enough explanation for the Nashville Number System or how to interpret the symbols. For example, it would be great if the instructions demonstrated less common chords and how to write them or interpret them. How do you create an augmented cord? How do you create a diminished cord? How do you create a bar with less than four beats or more than four beats? How to do you a push beat chord? Etc. Basically what does each symbol mean. It sounds like you have a good grip on the NNS and its quirky symbols, especially if you have my book. Augmented chord = chord then + sign Diminished chord = chord plus little diminished symbol (the small circle) A partial bar = use the hash marks above the chord that gets different than equal beats. I like to box that partial measure in also. The Push sign is ">" that will show above the chord. These are very common Nashville notation symbols. Would love to see more organizational tools for saved songs in updates (folders to sort by artist or something?). I’ve used this a ton already and shared it amongst my bandmates who love the look of it as well. I do wanna ask if it’s possible to add parenthesis in the keyboard for chords that aren’t played in the song (a crows participation section or drum solo for example) and also a double line underneath the chords for quick passing chords. Also would love the ability to copy a chart I’ve already made so I can experiment with having two versions of the same chart, one in 2/2 and one in common for example. Wonderful app. Looking forward to using it more. Great work.the only thing missing is the arrows for anticipating or delaying going both ways. I have 2 little requests: could there be time signatures available to add to the chart? This would save the step of going into the draw mode, zooming to the right spot, writing it, reverse. I play a lot of bluegrass and country and there are 2/4 bars everywhere lol 2nd: there are the very handy insertable rests: could these be slightly expanded to include a couple more options and could headless note stems be added for some simple rhythmic notation as well? Glad you're liking the app. We do have a push symbol for an anticipated bar, ">" For a delayed push, you could use the eighth rest before your chord? I hear you with the bluegrass/country half bars everywhere. Changing Time Sig is a quirky Nashville thing. We use the hash marks and box the extra measure in; a bar of 2 beats = chord plus 2 hashmarks and a box. Box is optional, but helps draw attention to the Sig change. Otherwise, if you're changing for the rest of the song, a new Sig would indeed be helpful. I hear you on the notation expansion also. We were sat a point when developing the app where useful notaion would have been a huge undertaking. Instead, we decided on handwriting function.
